I realized that I goofed in a previous blog entry. IE9 will be available for download tonight, not at 12 noon today (Eastern Time) like I previously said.
The exact time it will be available for download is 12 midnight Eastern Time (9 p.m. Pacific Time), tonight (March 14).

Comment by jarasan - March 14, 2011, 10:23 pmOne of my customer machines had it at 7pm EST! Looks like Google's. It was a vista machine and it listed it as an important update. It hung at first but they hadn't done a flash update, a reader update, once these were updated and the machine rebooted it loaded and required one more reboot. It is a little over 19 Mb.! And it is definitely faster. Thaks for the heads up last week!!!!!!!!!

I am sure you just forgot. IE4 could not be used on Windows3 - could only be used for Windows3.1 and newer. And of course who could forget, NO full-screen DOS compatibility starting with Vista.

Comment by Todd - March 15, 2011, 4:32 pmWell, as someone who works every single day with both technologies, I can tell you unequivocally that Apple abandons older products MUCH faster that Microsoft.
My dual-CPU PowerPC-based Mac can attest to that quite nicely. It didn't even live past a single "tenth" of an OS upgrade.
Microsoft, on the other hand, supports their older products far too long for most consumer usage. They do it because of their CORPORATE customers, who make up a huge chunk of their profits. That's why Windows XP is still supported more than a decade after it was released. Not because of you consumers, but because so many businesses have programs written for it.
And my God, you're going to tell me that Microsoft pulled the plug on DOS applications TOO SOON?! That fraking DOS support was the bane of Windows for WAY too long. It's a marvel that to this day they continue to support most old DOS stuff.
I'm not even going to mention the IE4 on Win 3.1 comment - I'm sure you must be joking. You're speaking with someone who developed a lot of stuff on that platform, so I know full-well what Win 3 looked like, and how many [i.e., how few] people were using it at the time.

Comment by truecritic - March 15, 2011, 7:23 pmI did post those "tongue in cheek." However, on the serious side, I used a few DOS programs that there are no exact duplicate Window programs. To this day, I still miss the ease of use of those particular DOS programs.
I could go on and say the same about some outdated Windows programs as well. There is no better email client than Outlook Express. It can be hacked into Win7 but it won't be stable. Windows Live Mail does not let you see source code - and email source code is part of nearly everyday for me.

There is so much of a rush to advance technology, the landfills are being jammed up with perfectly good hardware and software, and the masses don't know how any of it works or why it,..... got really slow?????????..........All they know, "is I got have it". When is it going to end?????? Microsoft keeps the products around longer because of market forces, it is in their best interest to keep enterprise in the XP, server 2003 2007 exchange supported because the hardware and software get business done for business.
So anyway this P4 2.6Ghz 2GB runs XP SP3 perfectly. Instant renderings multiple sessions NP. the machine is dimension2400. Never reboots, no BSOD!!!! Why do I need Win7 and show my stuff on the TV, and IE9? So I can teach my homies how to get the Gaga.
Recycle your old PCs to your local charities wipe your hard drives! IE9 is the Chromie.

Comment by jarasan - March 15, 2011, 11:13 pmTodd you are right, there does come a time to say when.................I've been "condemning" anything that has Win2k Win98 or Win95 on it. I say "do you see a USB port anywhere.....?" Then they get it..time for the recycle at the dump. I think gaming leads the tech road thru consumer land.
