Changed Tri-State Megabucks to the new version of the game: Tri-State Megabucks Plus. The game is played in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Made several improvements to the Lottery Post iPhone/iPod Touch Edition related to animation and some glitchy text handling (these changes where submitted to the iUI project for inclusion in the main library); shrunk the size of several images throughout the site to improve page load times (this will be an on-going effort); fixed IE6 styles that were corrupted in a past update; updated several of the tests in the Browser Compatibility Test page (Resources menu) to reflect the latest requirements for Lottery Post and new browser versions; fixed news tag for Canada Lotto 6/49 (the slash character previously caused a page not found error); fixed the ability to sort the Worldwide Jackpots page by different columns (sort was broken in a past update); got rid of IE7 compatibility mode in every page, and now force the use of IE8 mode when using the IE8 web browser (previously, text editor pages required IE7 mode).

Enhanced the animation on popup windows so that it always occurs within a certain timeframe, rather than being quick on some browsers and slow on others. This is done even at the expense of making the animation a little "jerky" on slower Web browsers (like IE). Animations on complex pages were taking far too long on IE browsers, while quick browsers (like Chrome, Safari, etc.) were going too fast.

Improved the Paste features of the editor. (Made several incremental changes over the last couple of days.) The editor handles styles pasted from Word and Excel better, and now also handles Lottery Post styles again. Plain Text pasting is handled better across every browser type -- now as a toggle button. To preserve all styles when pasting from Excel, the best approach is to click the Paste from Word toolbar button, and past the spreadsheet in the dialog box. When pasting from Word, the best approach is to simply click Paste or press Ctrl+V.

Fixed some bugs with the lottery results search engine when searching Pennsylvania Quinto for boxed matches. Also, now allows searching Quinto Mid and Eve together. Increased performance for all searches, particularly complex searches spanning multiple pages, and improved many of the text labels for searches spanning more than one game.

Upgraded menus to latest available version (5.822), which fixes some bugs: menu responds quicker when page first loads (previously did not always drop down on first hover); prevents a page crash in IE8 that occurred rarely; fixes some IE6 z-index bugs. This update not only helps the main blue menu bar, but also helps all popup menus for games and members, as well as the special "utility" popup menus that appear on some pages.

Added new Idaho Double Play Daily game to the Idaho Lottery Results page and to the predictions board. The new game, which is a 5/36 lotto draw, has two drawings per day. Each ticket purchased is valid in both drawings. The first drawing has a fixed $20,000 top prize, and the second draw has a progressive jackpot starting at $20,000. The game started May 3, 2009.

Fairly substantial web site update: added new Sitemap page (finally!); fixed "Not Found" pages so that IE users can have the same help/search capabilities that other browsers have had for a while; added new page footer that includes help text, links, and consistent appearance; came up with a new "copy to clipboard" method for people who upgraded to Flash 10 (which stops the old way from working), and installed the new copy to clipboard on the two Lucky's systems (other pages will receive the new copy feature soon); improved some basic functionality and appearance in the two Lucky's systems; improved warning pages; changed Game Information pages to identify all games using repeatable single-digit numbers as "Numbers Games" (previously only Pick 3 and Pick 4 were identified as such); several minor improvements to graphics; more targeted use of IE7/8 RSS indicator (on browser toolbar) so it now only lights up if the current page has a relevant RSS feed; improved instructions on the Post Predictions page, as well as a very prominent graphic drawing attention to the verification area; moved the Pick 3/4 games to the top of the list on the Quick Picks page (a member's suggestion); fixed minor script bug that affected only IE6; fixed a glitch with a few button that would not correctly disabled the button after clicking it on some browsers; numerous other minor changes, improvements, and fixes.

New printable views have clearer Print/Close links; Print/Close links will not appear on printed pages; print format is more streamlined and easier to read; replies on the forums that quote another post are identified, so it is easy to see on the printed page which post is being replied to. Also fixed jackpots on Game Information pages for non-US games, so that both the native currency and USD equivalents are shown. Fixed bug in Search page that would throw an error if a forum was selected and the date was changed to All History.

Completed remainder of corrections to Maryland Lottery past drawings, including those for Pick 4 Midday, Pick 4 Evening, Bonus Match 5, and Multi-Match. All errors are attributed to the original bad data that was supplied by Lotto Strategies. A total of 62 errors in the Midday Pick 4 drawings were corrected, 79 errors in the Evening Pick 4, 24 errors in Bonus Match 5, and 2 errors in Multi-Match. Now that the errors have been corrected, the Lottery Post database contains every Maryland Lottery drawing ever conducted, and all drawings are accurate. The past winning numbers displayed on the official Maryland Lottery Web site contain about a half-dozen errors, making Lottery Post the most accurate source for past Maryland Lottery drawings in existence.

Added Quebec Lottery's Astro game, along with more than a year of drawing history. Astro is a unique game in which a day (1 to 31), month (January to December), year (00 to 99), and astrological sign (12 astrological signs) are drawn, and players win by matching between one and four of them. Four different ball machines are used to draw the numbers, months, and signs. (Props to the Quebec Lottery for using ball machines and not computerized drawings!) Also, fixed a nagging problem that was showing square glyphs on the page instead of international characters.

Built a new number-parsing engine for the Post Predictions page, to make entering predictions much easier and more error-resistant. Users no longer need to enter each pick on its own line, and there is no pre-determined format for the numbers. Basically, anything that looks readable should be OK for the parser to handle. It will throw away extra "junk" it finds, such as extra blank lines, miscellaneous characters, HTML markup, etc.

Fixed bug in small date-selection calendars in which the day of week labels were shifted to the left by one day. Also took the opportunity to remove the ability to re-order the days of the week, as that feature was confusing with no apparent benefit. Finished implementing a series a enhancements, along with three rounds of updates to catch last-minute bugs and additional improvements. Some of the enhancements include: substantial new functionality for the Deflate 3 and Deflate 4 utilities; greatly improved number parsing for Inspector 3 and Inspector 4; new left navigation font, color scheme, and icons; new dynamic Amazon ad that rotates a wider variety and links right into the LP book store; fixed bug that allowed Guests to see birthdays on the Event Calendar; overhauled new member registration pages; rewrote and expanded some of the self-help content in the Contact Us page; improved the RSS information page; fixed bug that was preventing some graphs from appearing; upgraded all of the remaining "Classic ASP" pages to compress script and style downloads and utilize MS AJAX library (rather than custom library), changed Ireland Lotto jackpot amounts to native currency (Euro), fixed/prevented potential bug in Event Calendar that would be triggered by entering an invalid date, improved premium membership comparison and purchase pages to make for a better, clearer purchase process, other minor changes.

Implemented another site update, to fix a few more bugs and add a few enhancements. Fixed some random error messages that were coming up occasionally on pages containing the text editor. Fixed site errors for people using IE 6.0 with Service Pack 1 (by the way, anyone using that service pack on IE6 should immediately upgrade to IE7, because it is a VERY buggy service pack), added gzip compression of all pages, which cuts the number of bytes downloaded for each page at least in half - many time it's much more than that, fixed problem with Image Manager not loading when a member stays on the same page for a long time, fixed the RSS feeds for topics containing a "post moved" message.

Fixed a few more lingering bugs from the major update on July 30th. The bugs were mainly triggered in situations where old page data was being submitted -- not something that the typical user would encounter -- but it's important to eliminate these types of bugs too. At this point, the server under full load is returning zero errors for all web traffic, so any remaining bug(s) have been minimized or eliminated.

Fixed a few remaining bugs from the site upgrade on July 30th. As a result of the site upgrade, as well as a few small tweaks, the site is now performing with tremendously-improved performance, with most pages being processed in less than one-hundredth of a second.

Implemented system-wide changes to enhance performance, efficiency, and capacity of the site. Many small improvements were made on practically every page. The rich text editor was upgraded to the latest release, 3.1.0.1. Performance improvements are designed to condense and compress as many of the downloaded files as possible, while returning control of the page as soon as possible to the viewer. The Web site changes were installed on July 30 at approximately 1:30 AM, and small bugs that became apparent after the full load was place on the site were identified and fixed throughout the day.

Improved the ability to search Private Messages on the Search page. Searches now ignore hidden formatting tags when conducting the search, in order to eliminate false matches. Searches are speedier when searching Private Messages. Also, added Sent Items to the searched content for Gold and Platinum members. Previously, the Search page only searched the Inbox and any folders the member had setup. Now the Sent Items are searched in additional to all the previous search locations. A checkbox was added to optionally revert to the previous functionality, by ignoring Sent Items in the search. (Checkbox only appears for Gold and Platinum members.)

Fixed a display issue and improved the click behavior of the paging control used in the forums, fixed minor display issue with tables displaying in non-IE browsers, where the left and right of the table would be misaligned by 1-2 pixels, added new help content to the Browser Compatibility Test page as well as links to the download pages for all four supported browsers, fixed minor display issue in non-IE browsers on the Active Topics page, which displayed a thin line under forum titles and had an inconsistent mouse-over display, fixed miscellaneous display issues the occurred when using the Opera browser, improvements to scripts used to prepare tables with alternating row colors.

Cleaned up the forum database, to remove many "junk" messages that were posted before Lottery Post's more sophisticated post filter was implemented. Lottery Post now has an Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificate, which is the highest form of security currently available for web transactions. The EV certificate changes the color of the Address (Location) line green when the certificate is active, in compatible Web browsers. Currently, Internet Explorer 7 is the only mainstream browser that comes with support built-in, but support for EV can be added as a plugin to Firefox, and will be available in Firefox 3.

Upgraded site to Microsoft's latest .NET library version (.NET 3.5). Made substantial performance improvements, mainly by condensing style sheets and script files into a minimal number of external files, compacting the files, sending them with Gzip or Deflate encoding, doing intelligent caching, and placing script files at the end of the page, rather than the beginning. Performance improvements will be felt most dramatically by those with slower internet connections. Added a feature to the forums that limits the display size of test quoted from another post. If the size of the quote exceeds the maximum size, the quote box is shrunk, and scroll bars are added to the quote area. Each member can set their own maximum quote size on the Board Settings page. The default size is "medium". The feature can also be turned off, which makes quotes work exactly like they did before the feature was added.

Fixed more bugs with the login process. The latest bug was caused by some very old code, which was why it was not found more quickly. It was from a time when the login key was much shorter, causing the new new, longer login key to be truncated on older pages.

Fixed massive problem affecting the way Lottery Post images display in the Opera web browser. Many images were appearing improperly sized, positioned, or duplicated throughout the site. The root of the problem was that Opera does not properly handle a certain indexed GIF file format that all other web browsers seem to handle just fine. The majority of Lottery Post's GIF images were meticulously regenerated in a more generic GIF format, so now images appear as they should in the Opera web browser.

Increased vigilance against spam by "de-spamifying" any external links posted to the forums. The attribute *rel="nofollow"* is automatically added to every external link posted to the forums, which causes all major search engines to *ignore* the link. This takes away some of the incentive for spammers to post their junk on the forums. Also, all links posted in the forums will open in a new window, so the person clicking the link will not lose track of what they were viewing at Lottery Post. Before this change *most* links had this same behavior, but there were some instances where it was not working properly.

Implemented recent Arizona lottery changes to The Pick and Pick 5 (formerly Fantasy 5). Changes to The Pick include adding three balls to the matrix (now 6/44), eliminating the bonus ball ($10,000 prize), and increasing the low- and mid-tier prizes from $2 to $3, from $40 to $50, and from $1,000 to $2,000. (The annuity term also increased from 25 to 30 years.) Fantasy 5 was renamed "Pick 5" and the top $50,000 prize became a rolling, pari-mutuel jackpot that starts with a guaranteed $50,000 and increases until it is won. The other prizes, the game matrix (5/35) and all of the odds for Pick 5 remain the same as before.

Expanded delayed image replacement technique, to also include external images posted in a message body and in signatures. The technique (described in last Friday's entry) delays loading images not hosted at Lottery Post until after the basic content of the page finishes loading to the web browser. At that point the user gains control of the page, so the images loading at that point do not lock the page while they load.

Enhanced the thread pages to delay loading of avatar images not hosted on the Lottery Post web server ("external avatars") until after the page loads. Some members use avatars that are hosted on free image servers (i.e., slow servers), and every page such a member posted on would take a long time to load and appear to be "stuck", as the page attempted to load all of the slow external avatars. With the new enhancement, the page finishes loading quickly and can be used right away, as the external avatars get laoded in the background.

Implemented new URL pattern for going to a specific post - www.lotterypost.com/thread/xxxxxx.htm?get=yyyyyy, where xxxxxx is the topic ID, and yyyyyy is the post ID. The old URL format required the use of the "#" sign at the end of the URL.

Updated the Lottery Post rich text editor with new features: Insert Plain Text, Insert Word Text, and Table Merge and Split Cells. Implemented minor bug fixes to editor. The editor is used throughout Lottery Post, including for Forum posts, Blog entries, and private messages.

Fixed a bug in the Key Wheels page which prevented Gold members from producing a valid wheel. Added Kentucky Tic Tac Cash results starting May 17, and the new Michigan Classic Lotto 47 was added yesterday.

Ran a one-time cleanup of all member signatures created with the old Lottery Post editor. As a result of flaws in the old editor, several signatures had faulty embedded HTML, which caused display problems. Also fixed a problem with the Buddy/Block list that prevented members from adding a new block, and fixed a JavaScript error in the custom lottery results page.

Added additional warnings and a required checkbox to the Registration form, requiring that users add lotterypost.com as a Safe Sender in their e-mail's spam configuration. Too many activation e-mails are getting nabbed by overly-aggressive spam filters, especially AOL's, which suspects just about every e-mail is spam.

Fixed a bug with Search that caused "Search by Author" to return results when the member subscribed to a thread, but did not post any text to it.

Fixed several bugs in new Beta web site, including ability to maintain formatting when pasting from Office products like Excel, fixing rogue footer elements that would occasionally float into the body text on IE browsers, and several other miscellaneous bugs.

Fixed a bug in the predictions page, which would occur if a member tried to post a multi-day All State prediction starting on a Sunday. The days posted after Sunday only posted for those games which had a drawing on Sunday. Now, it posts all the games available on each different day.

Posted new version of Lottery Post as a Beta Test site. The new website represents a wholesale change to every page in the site. The main goal of the new site is to preserve the existing look and feel of the existing site, while complying 100% with XHTML 1.1 standards, using 100% CSS (table-less) layouts. Also, an all-new rich text editor is implemented, which adds a variety of new editor features, plus brings rich text editing to modern Mozilla-based browsers, such as Firefox and Safari. Every page in the web site was recoded.

Added L'ours chanceux (Quebec) in the Results page and Predictions page. Simulated prizes for correct predictions are calculated using the Texas Two-Step prize structure, not the actual L'ours chanceux prize structure, allowing comparative analysis between 4+1 games.
