Brothers sharing $11 million lottery win return to work

Aug. 4, 2005, 9:15 p.m.

After the Big Win After the Big Win: Brothers sharing $11 million lottery win return to work

Thirteen years after James and John Daly split an $11 million lottery prize, the twin brothers have returned to their old jobs as maintenance workers in the Brockton, Massachusetts, schools.

The Daly brothers quit their jobs after winning the prize, which is paying them about 415-thousand dollars a year for 20 years. The brothers say they don't need the money, but they miss the work.

One catch is that the Daly brothers no longer live in Brockton. At least one city councilor says he would prefer the jobs be given to people who live in the city.

School officials say because the Dalys worked for the city in the past, they are exempt from residency rules for city employees.

I think they should go to work and not get bored. If I win a jackpot, I should take lump sum.

The whole world out there - and the best they can think of is to go back to their old job. Is there an IQ limitation that the Lotto God has placed on winners? Sheeeeeeeeeeesh !

Cheers

I agree with that sentiment, to the extent that is there are so many creative things that someone can do, once they no longer have to worry about money.  Why go back to a job in which your personal impact is so small?  Do something larger in life!

>the twin brothers have returned to their old jobs as maintenance workers

I don't want to imply these guys are as dumb as a post, but with $207,500 coming in each year, you would think they could get a little training in some other more interesting field of work.  There's also a lot of low or no paying jobs you can do to help society and those in need that would fill your day in a meaningful way without having to take a real job from someone who actually needs the money.  I'd rather pick up litter on the beach or drive the elderly to doctor appointments than go back to a job like this - "maintenance worker" is the type of job normal people dream of escaping when they win the lottery.

These guys remind me of the clown who won the lottery and wanted to buy a trackor with brakes (do they sell them without brakes?), or the one who was going to buy a new refrigirator (versus a used one). It shows the Lotto God has a real cruel streak. I visualize them going into the store to buy a candy bar and getting a lotto ticket by mistake.

Cheers

I think that when you win that much money....You are in a situation where you can do what you want to do.  The brothers have choosen something that they want to do, not what others think that they should be doing.  My guess is that the school will be running smoother maintenance wise, especially when you have someone that wants to be working there, instead of someone thinking of how to escape there "normal" exsistance.

Especially after thirteen years of doing what ever they wanted to

Its really hard to believe this story. I could maybe see going back to work because you enjoy the challenges of a good career. But, c'mon, these are maintenance guys! (I'm not being condcending either, I'm sure they make more than I do at my current job) It does seem the lotto was wasted on them. As for me, if I won, I would use the money to better myself. This just seems like the movie Dumb n' Dumber coming to life!

Oh, and since I'm posting, I want to thank the quik pick generator for giving me a pick 4 box win on my first time quick picks! That translates to $93 on on a 25 cent bet, played on my last couple of dollars.

Yellow Eyes  Type......HAPPY FRIDAY TO ALL MY FELLOW HAPPY GAMBLERS.....

FST......CHEWIE & VIPERFOUR......you all have me laughing sssoooooo hard my face has turned "red"..............I do agree with the main sentiment being expressed in several of the blogs....There surely must be more in "life to accomplish"  than going back to maintenance work......Of course we don't know how much travelling they may have done already, or Charity work they are doing presently.  The fact that they are returning to "work at something" they really enjoy actually says a lot in itself.  In the environments they live in, Advanced University Study may be a "waste of time " for them.....
