North Carolina Lottery

The director of the North Carolina lottery says that state will likely offer its first lottery games by April 5th and may play in the one of the multistate jackpot lottery games by July.

Director Tom Shaheen said yesterday that he doesn't know if North Carolina will join Powerball or Mega Millions, the two national lottery games.

Mega Millions is played in Virginia and eleven other states.

Shaheen says his top priority is hiring a staff that eventually will number 200 to 300 employees. Another priority is starting the effort to award contracts for operating the games and lining up retail locations.

The new lottery in North Carolina is expected to affect Virginia Lottery numbers. About ten percent of lottery sales here are chalked up to North Carolinans.

North Carolina should join Mega Millions so that we can compete for some of the $$$$ that we have pumped into South Carolina's Powerball game.

Should make the borders of North Carolina very interesting yet again when the MM or PB jackpots get high!

I'm hoping we get Powerball.  I like it better. Crossing fingers!Big Grin Santa

I am thinking they are leaning towards MM, but I imagine that will all hinge on whether or not CA stays with it or not. If they drop out, that is a lot of ticket sales that could be lost, which would make that game a little less attractive to the NC Lottery Commission. Personally, I would prefer MM, just because I live in Charlotte, and I can get PB anytime. Being able to play in both giant lotteries would be outstanding for us, but would suck for those on the VA border that would be "stuck" with MM.

I still hope (multi-state) Lotto South will still be around a year from now, and NC joins it. Kentucky needs to reconsider dropping it.

CASH - that is an interesting situation. I would like to see that game here as well. I don't see why they couldn't have both. After all, VA does that as does GA.

SmashAll of you NC people, have you written a letter to the NC commission and governor not to bring computerized drawings to our state.  See Todd's post.

Tenaj - yes indeed!! We can't have that at all!

I hope that NC does get PB because of their current population. PB odds are at 146.5 million to 1 versus about 100 million living in PB states, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.

PB is a slightly better game with Powerplay and the Match 5 bonus, but MM would be a better fit for NC.

I suppose a lot of whether NC goes with Mega Millions or Powerball has to do with the neighboring states.
