$220 Million: Mega Millions lottery jackpot rolls again

Apr. 12, 2006, 9:54 a.m.

Mega Millions Mega Millions: $220 Million: Mega Millions lottery jackpot rolls again

The jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery grew to $220 million Wednesday.

None of the tickets sold for Tuesday's $189 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball. The next drawing will be Friday.

There were 17 second-prize winners from Tuesday night's drawing: 6 from California, 3 from Georgia, 2 from Illinois, 1 from Maryland, 3 from New York, 1 from Ohio, and 1 from Washington.  Each ticket matched all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $250,000 each.

The California second prize winners will receive $68,647 each, because California does not use the fixed prize amounts used by the other Mega Millions states.

Another 64 tickets matched four of the five lotto numbers plus the Mega Ball number. Each is worth $10,000, except California tickets, which are worth $8,640 each.

The winning numbers in Tuesday's drawing were: 2, 12, 45, 46 and 56. The Mega Ball number was 20.

The Texas Megaplier was 4.

Its starnge how if you got the 5 numbers in texas with the megaplier you walk away with a cool million, but the same 5 numbers in California are only worth $68,647.....

Hey does anyone know what the story is on  something about a lotto ticket that a player cashed in and the clerk told him it wasnt a winner then turned out to be worth like over 500,000???  He saw himself on the news purchasing it and the Lottery Office felt that something was not right when the clerk tried to claim it and they  pulled the tapes to look. My friend was telling me about this and I was lost had no clue and cannot find a article on it ...

The law in California that was written to establish the lottery states that all prizes are pari-mutuel, so that is the way ALL California prizes are awarded, not just Mega Millions.

It has worked both ways:  sometimes (like this drawing) the prize is lower than the other states, but sometimes it is much higher.  For example, there have been people who matched 5+0 and were awarded more than a million dollars.

I don't think those people are complaining about the pari-mutuel prizes in California.

I thought that was the kind of deal I was getting when clerk checked my ticket and said "This is not a winner sweet heart" crumbled it and throw it in the trash quickly. I was shocked because I already checked the ticket and was trying to cash in. I asked her to retrieve it from the trash and I took it home and saw I picked up the wrong ticket by mistake

I don't know specifically about this one, but I do know that before having a clerk throw away a ticket or cash it for less than what it's worth, all players should have the clerk run the ticket through the machine. They're supposed to anyway before they can give anything back. I should know. I used to be a clerk at a gas station that sold tickets. I, as a clerk, always checked the trash in case a player made a mistake, and I did find a $10 winner from a scratch-off one time. The player threw it out on his own with no help from me and was already gone by the time I got to it. Make the clerk check the machine!

There's a MegaMillions billboard showing the jackpot right on the way for us to get our PowerBall tickets. Since we usually go on Saturday, I always squeal when I see that no one hit it (that is since it's not us that night)  I like BIG numbers... especially when they have *Millions* after it!

And as far as people throwing away their tickets, if we're not sure we'll have the clerk run it through, but Muffin and I almost always pass the tickets back and forth to make sure that they were double checked. Haven't missed a good winner yet!

I think the next Mega Millions hitter is going to be SASSARI!!!!
