TV network chosen to air N.C. Lottery drawings

North Carolina LotteryNorth Carolina Lottery: TV network chosen to air N.C. Lottery drawings

The Triangle's CBS affiliate has been chosen to produce and air the nightly number drawings for the North Carolina Education Lottery, with the first lottery broadcast coming later this month with a drawing for the multi-state Powerball game.

WRAL-TV in Raleigh won out over WTVD-TV in Durham for the right to show the drawings on its station and provide it to other television outlets statewide. WRAL was the choice of an evaluation committee and executive director Tom Shaheen.

The N.C. Education Lottery Commission approved the three-year deal Tuesday. WRAL will provide the television studio and other equipment to produce the one-minute nightly drawing for the state's numbers games when they begin this fall. The lottery will operate the actual drawings.

WRAL also will air the twice-weekly drawings for the Powerball game, which are received via satellite from out of state. The North Carolina lottery will begin selling Powerball tickets May 30.

In exchange, the station offered $1.7 million in annual promotions about the games and its link to WRAL. The lottery commission also intends to give WRAL more than half of the television ads it intends to air in the Raleigh-Durham market, Shaheen said.

WRAL is owned by Raleigh-based Capitol Broadcasting Co., whose president is Jim Goodmon, an ardent lottery opponent during the debate leading up to passage of the games last August.

Capitol Broadcasting already airs the South Carolina Education Lottery drawing on WMYT in Charlotte and produced a similar lottery drawing show for the Hoosier Lottery when it owned a station in Indianapolis, WRAL general manager Jim Hefner said.

"As a matter of public policy, we did object to the lottery," Hefner said. "But the lottery is reality and it is here, and we're going to participate in it."

The lottery commission is negotiating with stations in other North Carolina markets to air the WRAL drawings, Shaheen said. But the lottery currently has found no outlets in the Charlotte, Wilmington and Asheville TV markets, he said.

The lottery commission also agreed Tuesday to allow lottery employees to purchase Powerball outside of North Carolina and lottery tickets from other states.

In a provision designed to prevent the appearance of favoritism, the lottery law prohibits all lottery employees, commission members and Shaheen — or members of their households — from buying North Carolina tickets or winning prizes.

Shaheen will remain barred from purchasing out-of-state Powerball tickets.

Shaheen said the lottery has generated $141 million in sales at more than 5,000 retailers since they began selling scratch-off tickets March 30. He said he hopes gross revenues will reach $200 million by the end of June.

The lottery introduced another instant-win game Tuesday — a bingo-type game with a top prize of $35,000.

It would make sense for Capitol Broadcasting to use WMYT for the NC games in the Charlotte market because they already show the Powerball drawings. They show the SC picks at 6:59 PM,and could show NC picks during the 11:00PM hour.

I just wish they would hurry up with the numbers games. I don't want to keep driving down to South Carolina to play  pick 3 and pick 4. (even if it's only 15 minutes away) Gas is too high!

Well, atleast we will have Powerball. Too bad someone already won it. It should have been me. Maybe next time.

Yes NodThey will be parsimonious about it and that's for sure.  I don't think WMYT (formally "The WB") reaches the major counties  in NC.  They would have to use the TV station that reaches the counties that buy the most tickets and right now Charlotte is not that county. They will have to reach Winston Salem and Greensboro.

I think they probably will use CBS because they are more lead back and less conservative.  I can't see NBC or ABC doing it at all.    You would have thought Mecklenburg County would have sold the most tickets since we are the largest but not so.  They are too conservative in this city.

Fox will reach the most counties and I'm sure cost the most.

This will happen because now we will have more people playing the lottery from VA who currently has the MM game.  Shaheen knows what he's doing.

No surprises here. WRAL is 800-pound gorilla in the market, and the stronger you are ratings-wise, the better chance you have of getting special things like this. On top of that, WTVD is owned by ABC itself, and from what I've noticed, network O&O's aren't too big into anything except news and shilling the network.

Here's the good news, from the mention of studio space I'm guessing ball machines are in order.

I suppose that's true, unless this is what the drawing computer will look like!  LOL

That's why I said I thought it would be a natural thing for them to carry the NC pick games on that station,at least for the Charlotte area market.WRAL may have to make other arrangements for different parts of the state.NC is a bit spread out in its various population centers compared to other neighboring states.

But then again, that's back when they had integrity (and yes, there was a time).

I looked at WMYT's website and under jobs, all information refers to Capitol Broadcasting of Raleigh.I surmise that Capitol owns WMYT and that they recently changed their name. They continue to carry most every program that was on The WB.It's where I watch SC nightly picks and the Powerball picks.
