$250,000 Mega Million prize may be forfeited
Mega Millions: $250,000 Mega Million prize may be forfeited
Rating:
Illinois Lottery officials say a player who bought a second-place winning Mega Millions ticket nearly a year ago in Des Plaines needs to redeem the $250,000 ticket by month's end or lose the prize.
The second place Mega ticket for the July 31, 2009 drawing was sold at a 7-Eleven store on Lee St. in Des Plaines. The ticket matched all five numbers but missed the Mega Ball. The winning numbers were 17, 35, 44, 52 and 56 with a Mega Ball number of 22 and a Megaplier number of 2.
If the winning ticket holder does not come forward by Friday, July 30, the money will be deposited into the Illinois Common School Fund. Players can have tickets verified at any Illinois Lottery retailer across the state.

Hopefully, the owner of the ticket comes forward before it expires. "No one remembers the person who almost climbed the mountain, only the person who eventually gets to the top."

This is why you always check your ticket even if there is not a jackpot winner.

This is why you always check your ticket even if there is not a jackpot winner. Yep, I always check my MM tickets too because of the 4,405,086 combinations that will win something, only one has a chance of winning the jackpot and usually no one picks it but plenty of players pick one of the others and most of them pay $2. * winning money isn't making money *
if you
* spend more than you make to win *

This makes me think of the guy who had the numbers for the $250,000 prize but lost his ticket, found it 3 days after the deadline and so he couldn't collect. He tried to sue but he lost (and rightly so, he had a year to find it).

It would be sad if someone did in fact throw it away and it goes unclaimed by the end of the month. Whoever bought the winning ticket could of have $250,000 more ( with taxes taken out ) for themselves and / or, his or her family.
I wonder if it was a quick pick ? ...

Could be some guy waiting for his divorce to be final. I hope it finalizes soon and he has a shrewd enough attorney to keep this from going to the other side. I know in my state, if there is a separation and a windfall like this occurs it is kept out of equitable distribution.

Could be some guy waiting for his divorce to be final. There once was a Florida woman who left her husband in Illinois and started a thread at LP asking if anyone in Illinois could help her prove an unclaimed lottery prize belonged to her husband who she claimed family members said would rather the state kept the money than claim it and have to split it with her. Maybe this is another such situation. * winning money isn't making money *
