Record Florida Powerball winner buys $1.175 million home

Powerball

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — The gold Ford Focus has disappeared from the dirt driveway. Also gone is the neighbor kid's congratulatory crayon drawing of palm trees, taped to the door of the tiny gray duplex where Gloria MacKenzie lived until she won $590.5 million, the largest single jackpot in American lottery history.

Records show that MacKenzie, 84, traded her former rental unit in for a 6,322-square-foot, five-bedroom home in Glen Kernan Country Club, a gated golf course community in southeast Jacksonville. The price: $1,175,000.

Property records show the deed was transferred to Melinda Ann MacKenzie, trustee, on June 21. Gloria MacKenzie has a daughter by the same name who teaches high school science in Maine. Her son, Scott, who had a standing agreement to split the prize with his mother, also lives in Jacksonville.

The listing for the two-story lake-front house describes it as "majestic," with a curved staircase, home theater and wet bar, fireplace, library, 4½ baths, a chef's kitchen and a full-size laundry room.

The former owners were listed as Dr. Yousif A. Abubakr, a Jacksonville hematologist oncologist. An office manager for Abubakr said he sold the home through a trust and did not deal directly with the buyer.

Troy Davis, who lives next door to MacKenzie's new home, declined to comment.

Back on the rural road in Zephyrhills where MacKenzie used to take walks, neighbors wondered what became of her.

"We were kind of disappointed we didn't see her again," said Paul Bathrick, who lives a couple of doors down from MacKenzie's former one-bedroom apartment. He said MacKenzie's two sons came a few weeks ago to remove her belongings.

Jorge Trapero, a friend of MacKenzie's who lived in the adjacent apartment, was not at the home Wednesday. A Progress Energy worker whose truck was on the property said he had just cut off the electricity to Trapero's unit. MacKenzie's, he said, was cut off a couple of weeks ago.

MacKenzie has remained in the shadows since coming forward June 5 to claim the prize, which she took in a lump sum of $370.9 million that totaled $278 million after taxes.

She referred questions to members of a law firm, who then would not answer questions. She bought the winning ticket on May 18 at a Publix on U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills, where a woman let her cut in line in front of her.

A possible sighting was reported June 9 when an unidentified woman who diners said looked like MacKenzie paid $2,600 for the meals of all 180 patrons at BuddyFreddy's off Interstate 4 in Plant City. She gave $50 to each of the five servers.

Most family members also have declined to comment.

News of the home purchase came as a surprise to Ella MacKenzie, her sister-in-law who lives in East Millinocket, Maine, near Bangor. She said she has had little contact with Gloria since she moved to Florida about eight years ago after her husband, Ralph, died.

"That's great," Ella MacKenzie said. "She didn't really have a nice home."

Ella MacKenzie said she also has not seen Melinda MacKenzie, who lives nearby, since her mother struck it rich.

"We used to see her quite a bit," she said. "She walked by the house a lot."

A home in a gated community makes a lot of sense when the press hounds you like they have hounded Mrs. MacKenzie.

i hope this is not another Abraham incident.
i pray that all is great and legit with Mrs. MacKenzie.

Keeping it quiet, keeping it smart. So far she is doing pretty much everything as she should. $1.175 is not too extravagant for a JP of that size.

Congrats on the home purchase, Ms MacKenzie.

Now it sounds like they're hounding her new neighbors too.  At least the one in this article had the sense to not comment, unlike her old neighbors and distant relatives who blab everything they know.  Oh and that electric company worker needs to be fired for giving out customer information too.

Gloria must feel the same way and therfore moved to a gated community. Its a personal choice that I can respect. I would personally rather just answer all the questions and consider all requests for money without any fears. This way I could help Artist write another book, and MAKE more money than I won.

You right Sir Ronnie " You"  don't agree. You making this about you instead of Gloria. I have yet to read of you going after your fellow Arizonian multi millionaire winner from last year,  you remember the one who split that massive jackpot with Cindy? In fact your State winner had a bill passed to prevent nosy people knowing everything about them including where they lived.
Like l said- double standards.  Checkmate.

Stack47

Gloria is getting much more media attention than the jackpot winners who answered a few questions at a press conference and had their picture taken holding a gigantic check. Maybe it's because her winnings were a record or maybe someone is trying to prove it's impossible to remain anonymous. It's one thing to say she bought a million dollar home, but they gave the address.

It's possible it's because Gloria never even thanked Mindy. If she sent Mindy a Thank You card with a check for 100 grand, maybe the Gloria sighting would stop.

En ReVal

Agree, she did NOT steal it, she was ALLOWED to go ahead in line.  A thief is someone who takes something that does not belong to them and not in clear site.

Btw, why can't she drive a fancy car at least? Just because she's 84 does not mean she has to sit around knitting or doing crossword puzzles. I think it'd be great to see her in a Ferarri California, toodling along at 35 in a 45 zone.

Congrats on the home purchase, Ms MacKenzie.

If she's truly smart and has good advisors she shouldn't be quite so easy to locate. Perhaps they figured that the press would follow her and figure it out anyway,  but buying the house in her daughter's name certainly didn't cause any trouble for those who were trying to find out. Then again, it's also possible that she'll be moving again in the fairly near future, and might already have purchased something through an entity that the press won't easily trace to her.

OldSchoolPa's avatarOldSchoolPa

When I win, people may as well mind their own business as I will be racking up a lot of frequent flyer miles the year after I win. I won't purchase a house or any automobiles/toys during that time, but I just might purchase some investment property (of course in a properly structured entity).  By the time I cool my traveling heels (or will I really do that), there will have been at least a couple of larger jackpot winners and even a feel good jackpot lottery pool for the media hounds to zero in on. And for those who insist on sending me "Dear Jackpot Lottery Winner" letters, I hope they don't seriously expect a response!

I was talking about the extra attention Gloria is getting because someone followed her, took the pictures coming out of a restaurant and Walmart, and found out she bought the house. And I used the Mindy incident as a possible reason. As far as whether or not Mindy has anything coming is a different discussion.

People are curious about what the jackpot winners are doing, at least on LP, because they watch the TV show documenting jackpot winners. It seems to me for someone who wanted no attention, for some reason Gloria is getting a lot of it.

All I can say is congratulation to Miss Gloria for a being the largest single jackpot winner in American lottery history!!! 84 years old, she derserves to live the rest of her life wealthy. She really needs her son to be there to help her, take care of her, so she can stay out of a nursing home!!! Really enjoying the rest of her life here on this earth! I don't want a bunch of strangers in my house either, who's to say if you can trust anyone who has this much money to live there and cook, clean, gardening. Anyone with a greedy mind could kidnap her and hold her for ransom. So what could have or should have been, is not what happen! She won, that's it! So let's all be glad it was her and not some rich person who was already wealthy!! Anyone of us could have won, we all think it should have been one of us! But it wasn't any of us! Let's all be happy for her, and let her live in Peace!! I will keep playing the lottery until the day I win or die! Which ever one comes first! Just found out yesterday my brother-in-law has prostrate cancer, my sister is really upset, don't know what stage it's in yet. He will be going tomorrow for the test results of how far along it is! 54 years old, he Alway watched what he ate, they both are health nut too! But death knows no age! Be Happy and safe today folks, visit your Family and tell them you love them, live each day as if it is your last, cause one day it will be here! I would be pissed if the press publicly gave away my new address..

They put a Huge target on her, plus they showed what the house looked like.

I would go Balistic...Mad

I would be too but it's all a matter of public records.  That's why you can go on a tour of star's homes in Hollywood...and why they have such extravagant security systems.

The difference between Hollywood stars and most lottery winners is that Hollywood stars thrive on the fame while most lottery winners just want to go on living a normal life without the fame.

Glen Kernan Country Club in Jacksonville where the home is at is a couple of miles from where I live. It is upscale, but not the most expensive area to live around here. Location wise, it is nice because the beaches are just a few miles to the east and downtown is a few miles the other way. Shopping and restaurants at The St. Johns Town Center, a relatively new and huge outdoor shopping complex, is only a couple of miles away. The University of North Florida is also only a mile or two away.

It's a great location...

My pop had prostate cancer;  an uncle had a PSA level of 12 and his doctor was alarmed - my dad's was 1400.  The cancer had spread to his bladder, lymph nodes and spine, but he didn't want chemo or radiation, so the doctor started him on hormone therapy and it kept it in check.  In fact, my dad was balding, like his father (and like I am) and one of the side effects was he started growing a lovely crop of wavy hair.  He lived about 15 yrs. after the diagnosis/surgery, passing away about a yr. to the day of when mom died. (I think he just gave up)

I don't think it (prostate cancer) has as much to do with not maintaining a healthy lifestyle (although my dad's smoking and excessive drinking was prob. a factor in his, but he had quit both years before) but more due to genetics and age.  Of course, an unhealthy diet is thought to be the cause/contributing factor of many types of cancer.  I've read that more men die with prostate problems than from them.  Tell your BIL I'll be praying for him and sending good thoughts his way and that his diagnosis isn't the death sentence it was just a few decades ago.

You are absolutely correct MIKE. We have made tremendous improvements, in the treatment{not cure} of prostate cancer. The shock an stigma still persists though with the family, depending on how the family doctor explains it to them. SOME DOCTORS JUST DONT CARE-IRONIC CONSIDERING........... This is why I always tell people to buy insurance whether they think they need it or not. Despite all the improvements in treatment, the COST IS STILL HIGHLY PROHIBITIVE for most families{thanks to the GREEDY DRUG COMPANIES}. This will be an absolutely perfect time to hit the JACKPOT. Here is hoping for some monster lottery win!!!!!.

"....the COST IS STILL HIGHLY PROHIBITIVE for most families".  Yup, I really don't remember the exact cost, but my dad's monthly shot of that hormone was outrageous, something like two grand or thereabouts, not counting the dr. visit and numerous extras they always managed to tack onto the bill.  My dad had me in stitches talking about dreading - as he called it - "the ol' finger-wave" (the digital exam)  "All that and the S.O.B. doesn't even buy me dinner!"

She is over 66 so she can still collect 100% of her SS. I'm not sure if she will pay 39% of her SS in Federal taxes, but her 2013 income will be put her in that tax bracket.

I'm pretty sure she can afford it.

I don't get off where some of you say she stole it, the lady in front she cut in line, was asked by the cashier if she would like her spot back, because the cashier seen the old lady cut in front, and her words were "No, it's not like I am going to win anyways." The media interviewed her, and asked her if she felt it was stolen from her and she said not exactly because she was given the option and said those very same words to the cashier...

But I do think the old lady should have offered her something, for letting it go and letting her cut in front. However the lottery officials have stated that the girl she cutted in front of, it would have not mattered she would have not gotten the winning ticket, because it had to be at that precise timing when the cashier hit the key... every second counted.

It matters if she is a theif, and didnt make things right with the person she stole from.

I agree.   She was only in the "right place at the right time" because she cut in front of someone who didn't make a fuss, probably to show her daughter to respect older people.

By the way, regarding the "gated community" posts, this type of community is extremely common in Florida.  I can't imagine being that wealthy and living in Jacksonville without a security guard at the gate and roving patrols.   Although I agree that $1.175 isn't a huge amount of money for a multi-millionare to spend on a home (in fact it's a little conservative) I would never want a house that huge at 84.   Maybe her daughter has children and it will be a nice investment for her family.

I would never want my privacy to be invaded like this, however.

Hey ther justx.

With a house that size she probably is indeed thinking about her daughter.

This is from a book I read recently:

Scientists had made contact with people on another planet and they sent them a message asking them what they valued the most.

Scientists expected a scientific answer, thrologions were waiting for something about theology, doctors were waiting for medical answers, etc....

Finally, when a message came back it said, "What we value most of all is our privacy."

39% Wow Stack. So a person who has a million dollars writes a check for $390,000 and then has to use the other $610,000 to buy thing like gas that is taxed at over $1 a gallon at the pump, and pay State, County, City, Municipal, Property, and other local taxes not to mention taxes we pay bills we pay every month?

Hi everybody,

Long time no see (busy at work) and I have to quickly jump in and right back out, but I couldn't let this slide.  As bad as the 39% number sounds, it's worse than that.

Thanks to Obamacare, the top rate this year (and any jackpot winner would easily be in this bracket) is actually 43.4% because there is a 3.8% Unearned Income Medicare Contribution Tax on top of the top rate of 39.6% and the 3.8% extra tax applies to anyone earning over $200K ($250K for married filing status) for the year.

I hope everyone is doing well - I've kept up here by reading most of the posts as I get the chance, but I just had to reply here because we're steadily approaching the George Harrison "Taxman" scenario:

"If 5% appears to small, be thankful I don't take it all."

Good luck in lottoland, good people of LP!

Best regards.

At least Florida does not have state income tax. If she lived in the state of New York she would need to pay another 8.8% for state tax on top of federal income tax and the Unearned Income Medicare Contribution Tax.
