2 winning Mega Millions tickets sold in Florida, Maryland to split $414M jackpot

Mega Millions

Update 1:  Winning ticket locations and other details

Update 2:  Final jackpot numbers released, story updated

Winning tickets in Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing with a jackpot of $414 million, the third largest in its history, were sold in Florida and Maryland, state lottery officials said.

The final lump-sum cash value of the jackpot is $230.9 million.

After the final jackpot totals were counted, the annuity jackpot of $414 million remained the 7th-largest United States jackpot of all time, but the cash value jumped up one place on the list to the 8th-largest cash value in history.

The Mega Millions numbers for Tuesday night were 11, 19, 24, 33, and 51, with Mega Ball number 7.

The jackpot grew after no one matched all six numbers in Friday night's drawing.

Florida lottery officials say their winning ticket was sold at a Sunoco convenience store in Merritt Island on the Space Coast. That winner has 180 days to come forward, and state lotto officials will release his or her name and city of residence.

Maryland lottery officials say their winning ticket was sold at Lady Liquor in La Plata, south of Washington. The winner has 182 days to claim the prize and can do so anonymously.

Both retailers receive $100,000 commissions for selling the winning tickets.

The record U.S. jackpot of $656 million was in a March 2012 Mega Millions drawing. In December 2013, lucky ticket holders struck the second largest Mega Millions jackpot of $648 million.

The game is offered in 43 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In December, a winner in Northern California split a $648 million jackpot (the second largest in game history) with a winner in Atlanta.

The store where a winning ticket is sold can receive up to $1 million in winnings, depending on the size of the jackpot, virtually assuring that whoever sells the winning ticket on Tuesday will get a seven-figure bonus of their own.

The largest lottery jackpot ever was a Mega Millions drawing in 2012 for $656 million. That prize was split among winners in three states.

Why does it always become way too easy to win when jackpots hit the $400 million mark?

I'm convinced there will never be a billion $ jackpot ever.

the higher the jackpot gets the more people will play and spend more than usually some people who never played before will buy a ticket when the pot gets big.

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Lottery today announced that one lucky player matched all five numbers and the Mega Ball in the Tuesday, March 18, MEGA MILLIONS® drawing and will split the $414 million jackpot with one other winner who purchased their ticket in Maryland.

The winning MEGA MILLIONS numbers were: 11-19-24-33-51and the Mega Ball was 7. The Megaplier® was 3. The jackpot-winning Quick Pick ticket was sold at Sunoco, located at 600 S. Yeah, the last few rolls had disappointing increases.  I think another factor is the fact that these large jackpots aren't rare anymore, it's almost like a "once in every 3-month" occurrence.  If people missed out on this one, there's another big one sure to come along soon.

Either admin & dpoly1 are right or you are right. On the USA MEGA jackpot analysis section it states that DE has no state taxes on lottery just like dpoly1 has pointed out but you disagree. What?

this is from the delaware lottery website

How much is taken out of my winnings for Federal and State taxes?
For any prize of more than $5,000, the Lottery withholds 25% of your winnings for Federal tax. All winning Delaware Lottery tickets are subject to Delaware Income Tax. However, if you are not a Delaware resident, your state may tax your winnings.

On the jackpot documents distributed to Powerball lotteries. The text I posted is actually not black on the doc, so it's not something clearly visible. Seems to act as a kind of placemarker. There are no forecasts between the next draw (which will be $96M if no winner btw) and the dates I posted, however.

Yes, it seems odd but sales have a limited capacity. There are only so many terminals which can only print so many tickets within an allotted timespan. There are 3 days to buy tickets for Saturday draws (Thursday-Saturday), but 4 days to buy for the Wednesday draw (Sunday-Wednesday). Another factor would be advance draw sales....people waiting to see if it will go higher then buying advance draw sales with their Saturday purchase.

I hope things go well for the winners, whoever they are. I won't be buying again until the jackpot reaches $100 million. Since the odds have gotten so out of hand on Powerball and MegaMillions, I only play them myself when the jackpots break $100 million. I may up that a little more if jackpots that high get more common.  I still play in my 12 person lottery pool at work though, since it gives me chances at 3 different games.

Lately I'm concentrating on Louisiana Lotto and Easy 5, along with the Lotto Lagniappe raffle game. Basically, if I buy 5 Lotto tickets, I get a bonus raffle ticket with prize of $50,000 and with Lotto at $1.45million, I'm willing to buy extra tickets.

Well, I think those are very premature and speculative figures. Nobody really "knows" for certain how players will behave once the jackpot tops $1 billion. But if it rolls past a billion, then people will be looking forward to $2 billion and so forth. It would be pretty crazy.

I'm not sure we'll ever get to that point with the current game and cost structure, though. MUSL projects a jackpot of $1 billion about once in 10 years. With sales of $439,506,354 we would be looking at less than 30% chance of rollover. For $1,242,906,565 that drops to less than 3% chance of rollover.

Congratulations to all the WHINERS. You now have more to whine about. You can now include Florida with Cali and NY as states that rig the PB and MM.

I was thinking the same thing and wondering how they were going to twist ANOTHER non-California non-New York win into their BS 'theory'. I'm guessing Florida will now have to be in on the big conspiracy.

Time to chase the PowerBall game. Will the Mega Game Jackpot exceed the Power Ball Jackpot before there is a winner in the  latter game?

What?

Boooooooooooooo I had two numbers and the Mega Ball.    Kind of dissapointed as the numbers I play really matched up well tonight as my highest number is 33.   That's life, maybe next time.

I got 2 numbers and the Megaball on Friday and 2 numbers on Tuesday.  She'll come around. We are getting close.

I think I'll try my luck with scratch-off tickets twice a week until the Mega gets above $100ms.  Haven't played those for over 15 years now but can you guys recommend any good scratch off lottery game that pays millions or thousands pers week for life (heard that somewhere) and only cost a dollar?  I';mm iinn Waaashhhinnnggton s-ttate.

3 years ago, I'm not allowed to buy the ticket yet. My mom used to buy them for me. Now I can jejeje...wait 'til I turn 21 and you'd see a young JP winner here.Embarassed I wonder why mostly JP winners are aged? Jejejeje...maybe this time for once I'd see someone young to win, at least.

Young people rarely play the lottery , I'm 22 and none of my friends play.

I want the lottery ppl target the young once. Let us win instead of them letting 75-year old ppl win, what's the use?Thinking of...Give us a chance too. We need it more than they do, don't you think?

I did not play in my 20's.  Too busy getting my degrees..barely had time to eat, let alone buy tickets.
