New York Lottery

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The purchaser of a New York State instant scratch-off Wheel of Fortune ticket was upset after she purchased a ticket that revealed an insult, according to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office.

The woman proceeded to scratch-off and complete Game 2 located at the bottom of the ticket.

That game lists three separate categories that a purchaser must scratch off and match up the missing letters. The three categories are listed as "Person", "Place" and "Thing".

The purchaser, upon revealing the words underneath each of the categories, discovered it spelled "YOU ELMIRA TRASH".

The woman believed the ticket may have been tampered with and that is why it was turned over to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said it was discovered that the ticket was genuine and was coincidentally sold in the Elmira area.

The New York State Lottery was notified of the purchaser's concerns so officials could take whatever action they felt necessary.

Ok this is what i had long suspected with scratch tickets.. The lottery folks know where the winning scratch tickets end up going to within the state.. Just like WA state i notice there is more winners outside of the Seattle metro areas like Spokane, Vancouver, and places that is not close to neighboring cities close to downtown.. If you don't believe me check out your state local winnings page and it will show you the big winners come from small towns not big cities..

I think the lottery folks know which areas they send the winning tickets too and it's rigged..

Wow!!! That really was a insult and then sold it in the Elmira area. What wrong with this lottery? It doesn't want Elmira customers. I don't think anyone laughing over this in Elmira. The New York Lottery owe these people a public apology. Now that it landed in the news paper for the whole world to see. Somebody in New York's Lottery Public Relation Department should see the wisdom in moving in that direction. ASAP

To make up for their insult I bet we see NYL send over a few big winners over there ....

People are way too sensitive.  What if it read " You Elmira jewel" .would we be hearing this?..doubtful. People want nothing to do with Trash but it's everywhere and part of the English language. It's about Person/ Place/ Thing...goodness Grief.

Here's something else to think about: Had this person WON the top prize in this particular scracher game- they probably would have laughed it off LOL It's because they Lost, they felt this added insult to injury.

I Agree! but because it was a losing ticket, the player decided it was a fraudulent ticket and called the sheriff.

I guess everybody is looking for an easy payday. If you complain hard enough, somebody might listen and you might even get paid regardless of how ridiculous it might be. Anybody remember the old lady that spilled her own drink on herself and got paid Gazillion$ for her troubles. I bet you McD. is still pissed about it.

Not familiar with that game but it looks like you see the playboard letters that spelled it out when you buy the ticket (so, there should be letters to be revealed elsewhere on the ticket). The partial transparent coating over the letters just allows for easier marking as letters are revealed on the other part of the ticket.

Since the buyer was able to see the offending words before scratching the ticket, if it was so offensive then why scratch the ticket? Guess a losing ticket is more offensive than a winner...

Looked the game up on the NY Lottery website and you don't have to scratch anything to see the words. Here is what the ticket looks like when bought:

If I was a Comic in Albany, I would be offended at being called a Pineapple...
