7th-largest jackpot in US history
By Todd Northrop
This week Powerball is the hot ticket, featuring a massive jackpot that is approaching a billion dollars.
The new high-water mark of $875 million for the current Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was achieved after no winning tickets were sold for Wednesday night's $746.3 million grand prize.
It is the 7th-highest lottery jackpot in history, and the 3rd-largest Powerball jackpot ever.
The lump-sum cash payout value of Saturday's Powerball jackpot is $441.9 million — the 13th-largest ever recorded in United States lottery history. (See top 25 annuity and cash values below.)
Players looking to calculate what they would receive after the initial federal and state tax withholdings can find it all pre-calculated for each Powerball jurisdiction on the Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega, a web site devoted to the Powerball and Mega Millions multi-state lottery games.
The largest Powerball jackpot ever awarded was on Nov. 7, 2022, when one ticket sold in California won a $2 billion grand prize. The incredibly lucky winner was Edwin Castro, who claimed the prize in February of 2023, providing minimal public information about himself. What little is known about Castro comes from public filings, and includes the purchase of a house or two, as well as being the subject of dubious lawsuits that are unfortunately predictable these days.
Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs. For example, the original estimate for Wednesday's drawing was $725 million, but by the time all the proceeds were counted just before draw-time, the jackpot had swelled to $746.3 million.
Saturday's mammoth prize is the result of 36 consecutive draws without a winner. The run-up started as a $20 million prize on Apr. 22.
Some states offer direct online sales, allowing players to bypass the store and purchase tickets from home. States that offer this ability include Michigan (Mega Millions and Powerball), Minnesota (Mega Millions and Powerball), Oregon (Mega Millions and Powerball), Texas (Mega Millions and Powerball), and Virginia (Mega Millions and Powerball). Note that some of these links will only work properly for residents of the states mentioned.
Players outside the USA can use a reputable butler service, which provides scanned copies of the purchased lottery tickets securely held on behalf of the customer. In the past, the lottery ticket service was used by people out side the USA to win big jackpots in Oregon and Florida.
The winning numbers for Wednesday, Jul. 12, 2023 were 23, 35, 45, 66, and 67, with Powerball number 20. The Power Play number was 3.
The Wednesday Double Play drawing results were 42, 49, 54, 62, and 63, with Powerball number 21. Double Play is a game option currently available in 14 states that lets you play your numbers in a second drawing for an extra $1 per play, with a chance to win up to $10 million in cash. See How to Play Powerball at USA Mega for more information about Double Play.
Even though nobody won the jackpot Wednesday, 2 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Florida and 1 from Indiana. Neither of the second-prize winners purchased the Power Play option. If they had, their prize would have been increased to $2 million.
When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. A complete list of prizes available for matching various numbers can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts and the Powerball Double Play Prize Payouts pages at Lottery Post.
Power Play is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.
Also in the Wednesday drawing, 36 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 10 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $150,000, and 1 of the tickets was sold in California, where the prize was worth $117,977 this drawing.
Following the Wednesday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $128.7 million from its previous amount of $746.3 million and the cash value was raised by $65 million from its previous amount of $376.9 million.
The next Powerball drawing will take place Saturday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.
Powerball is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.
Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com). The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.
Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all time
Saturday's Powerball jackpot currently stands as the 7th-largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States. That position may rise before the drawing, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates, and brisk sales may push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.
Also shown is the current Mega Millions jackpot, which is simultaneously reaching historic levels — now sitting at 20th on the all-time rankings.

Top 25 cash value jackpots

Life changing generational wealth!
Powerball website has a countdown timer, just over 62 hours until the drawing.
How many more rollovers before the drawing I ask? Am thinking close to $950 millions...
A countdown timer is so 2010.
and you can do better ?!?
lol 62 is an interesting number.
its going to hit over $1.6 again. might go to $1.9 just like every 19 yrs another change in the world.
Dear Friends,
I hope it is evident to you as sure as the skies are blue, that there is no magical trick to winning the lottery.
It's not in the horoscope, it's not in your birthday dates, it's not in your family shoe sizes, it's not in manifesting a win or possessing it. It's not in trying to beat the system whatever that means.
It's not in all that crap and many more.
Winning the lottery is - let the drums roll - PURE LUCK.
If it was anything else the jackpot wouldn't get past the starting 20M.
Don't kill the messenger 🤣🤣
Trying my luck as well - will get two quick pick tickets for the Saturday drawing 😁
Buy Your Ticket(s) and get on the roller coaster for the ride of your life!
Grabbed 3( all QPs) this morning.. Considering getting another 2(chosen numbers) before the draw.....Sent the current figures to a few friends and peaked their interest, so that may require another purchase or 2.... Alot goin' on ......BUSY with choices.. Even the Mrs is getting into the act of pickin numbers for these last few draws(BTW....hers are terrible but I don't tell her that , cause she wont make me any blueberry or apple bread) ...... WELL FOLKS, here's hoping that 1 or even a few of us are very fortunate this weekend.......Good luck to all
Am in too - will get two QP and I always add the extra buck for the power play - Ii I hit second tier, there will be more left after the taxes 🤣🤣
The ride will start after my numbers hit. Before that am just eating my fruits and vegetables religiously 🤣🤣🤣
Already have started adding to the "No you ain't gettin any" list.... I see I have added a few from the last big jackpot runs... Folks need to be a lil nicer and not so "offended" all the time.
Am I on that list???
Goodbye 1995 honda accord. Hello Bugatti Chiron
Thanks for donating !! LOL
Those Honda's are forever cars, just leave the keys in the ignition with a note: It's all yours.
Btw: l read that the guy who's claiming that Castro is not the winner of that billion dollar payout & that the ticket belongs to him - could serve jail time for getting law enforcement involved in a nothing case.
True, but you can't win it if you're not in it!
I played quickpicks and I played a few lines in which I chose 2 or 3 numbers and used a random number webpage to choose the rest.
Saturday will tell.
I can think of some people I know who would come looking for money and have already decided to tell them no.
In fact, anyone who asks for money isn't getting any!
"If it was anything else the jackpot wouldn't get past the starting 20M. "
What if it's just a result of the lottery really being a tax on stupid people and none of us can figure out the right formula for predicting a result that really can be predicted?
"anyone who asks for money isn't getting any! "
I've long thought that that's a good rule. I might give you something, but asking makes it absolutely certain that I won't. The problem is that the not asking can still be annoying as h ell. Anyone who ever had a friend that started selling Amway or Shaklee probably knows that from first hand experience.
after paying taxes, one will get only 1/3 of the jackpot (the tax men get 2/3). it kinda sucks!
ticket sales have been slow (in comparison the $2B jackpot then).
I see your common people over priced BARF-ALLAC
and raise you an SCG BOOT
making it hard is part of the fun or else Powerball and MegaM would be bankrupt
I haven't won from the numbers generated by the QP, but with my own numbers. I think the algorithm is rather dumb.
The smart people would have figured a way to win it with their smart brains - no one would pass an opportunity to get 20M leave alone 800M.
Am just spending what I can afford, same way one does when they buy beer lol
In TX the cash value amount ($560M) will net $352.8 after taxes.
I have 3 grown kids that will want a cut. Hmmmm. How much.....
If you go with lump sum, after all you'll get $278,434,045
No state tax in Texas.
The cash amount is 441,900,000 and federal taxes are 163,465,955 so even with no state taxes that's 278,434,045 after.
Are you getting it mixed up with the mega millions jackpot of $560M
LOL. OOPS.
Yeah, the MM annuity is 560 M. Looked at the wrong number.
Cash PB is $441.9.
63% Fed taxes, no state tax.
Maximum Federal tax rate is 37%. Not 63%
Good luck to everyone.....but I hope it rolls...lol
I hope I win
"Maximum Federal tax rate is 37%. Not 63% "
He's an optimist. His glass will still be 63% full after the taxman gets his cut.
Hey Trax, long time no see! I just got out of prison.
Now time to finally win the PB!
My Caddy looks better than your SCG BOOT tho!
I hope you are feeling good and good luck in PB this weekend.
Golfer
Don't believe in the advertising amount, you just get less than 1/3 of that...
Rcb, have no worries... You are getting 5.......................................twenty dollar bills. I may even go all out and find you star note types....Just doing a little extra for the special folks
Ever tried the LP quickpick generator? How about Random.org?
No it is not evident that winning the lottery is not with manifestation, birthdays, shoe size, horoscope or whatever else. At the end of the day you have not interviewed each and every Mega Millions and Powerball winner to find out what they did to win the jackpot. There are winners who win with quick pick numbers and other who win with their own special numbers. Most people who win with their special numbers do not reveal what the secret is because of people like you.
I agree with you how people are so misinformed on how much they really get. if people really did the math maybe they would understand better.
If I were to hit at least 5 numbers, I have ideas what I would do with it.
Expect a phone call from either a long lost relative, I would expect some girl to call me unexpectedly to say I am the father of her child or something. it sounds weird but no thank you.
The cash option was raised to $452.2 million for the Saturday drawing (raising the top-25 ranking to 12th), but the annuity did not change at $875 million.
Likewise, the Mega Millions cash value for tonight's drawing was raised to $287 million, but the annuity did not change at $560 million.
let's assume the current jackpot is 1 billion.
-the greedy lottery people would get their 50% cut: $500M
-then Federal tax at 37%: $185M
-State tax (mine is %4.95): $25M
-you'd get =500-185-25= $290M or ~1/3 of the jackpot
If another entity took 90M, I would still be ok with 200M.
If another took 100M. I would still thrive with the 100M left or 50M or 10M or 5M - lol
It's not the numbers in and of themselves that made them win - the system does not throw out numbers just because it's someone's birthday or shoe size. They just get lucky that the numbers they picked, birthdays shoe size or otherwise, got drawn.
If people won because of their special numbers, everyone would be a winner.
But humans like to sensationalize and try to attach meaning to everything, even where there is none.
I suggest you read "Fooled by Randomness" by Nassim Nicholas.
Might be a good time to play MM and hope you win but also hope someone wins the PB where all the attention will be on that winner or winners!
I was just at the grocery store and people were lined up to use the lottery machines. So I bought a machine qp pb and one online with my own numbers.
Absolutely CT.......... orrrrr you could win both and really attract some attention
What's the appeal to lottery?
>>it is a cheap, and simple solution to fix a lot of big problems in one's life .:) [unless, your wife dibs 50% of your money ]
I think the lottery people should take 25% cut of the jackpot only, give 25% back to players, then beef up those second, third, fourth... tier winnings when the jackpot is hit (after all it's people's money, not lottery people's money).
Good luck to everyone!
wow
I wish good luck to everyone too.
If I win, I'd be OK with sharing it with a couple of people. Spread the joy around.
Don't forget me, we were in kindergarten together - I sat right behind you 🥴🥴🥴🥴
It is unlikely the jackpot annuity estimate will increase before the draw given interest rates have dropped.
Actually, I never went to kindergarten. It wasn't required at the time so my parents didn't bother sending me, so I just went to first grade a year later.
Atleast I will get $10 bucks for the effort lol
MM now at $640M/$328M Cash for Tuesday...... Very nice....Good luck to all
Sounds good doesn't it? Pari-mutuel failure again in CA as two players received a paltry sum on Mega Millions five #'s...
Read about a player in Virginia. Clerk sold him the wrong scratch ticket. Instead of getting ugly, he kept it. It turned out to be a $250K winner.
Today will look for rescue tickets again to buy.
Lol Me too because we moved and it was not required and I was still the youngest first grader in my class.
I'm never right when I make predictions, but I believe it will happen on the 22nd.
As for me, I would gladly pay taxes on the Powerball Jackpot and Mega Millions jackpot. The money i would receive is more than enough to keep my bank account fat happy. All you people complaining about the jackpot being taxed, it is still more money than you have now, be grateful for the win.
Husband to wife: Honey, what would you do if I won the lottery?
Wife: I'd divorce you and take half the money!
Husband: Well I won $10, here's your $5, now start packing!
Well, JustMaybe sat behind you in first grade then. Memories get fuzzy over time.
Come on Powerball.
Last time it was high like this had said it would bump up... it didn't!
So far no increase.
Well, maybe no winners for tonight and $bil for Monday
That's so very true - people complain like they already have 500M in their account 🤣🤣
Am sure most would pass out if they just won 100K lol
l have a simple Theory and my theory is if the Jackpot does not increase from $875 million to one Billion dollars tonight it means Sales are not hot so Nobody will win Tonight and Next jackpot will be $1.2 billion and self increase to $1.5 billion. But if the Jackpot goes up tonight to $1 billion then two people will win and Share the Jackpot and those two people will be Me lol hahaha Because l bought two similar tickets one for Lump sum and one for Annuity . I need to enjoy life Now and also tomorrow lol Good luck to you all Cheers
Watching the draw video, only said it was worth $829,400,000.......that's way less than the advertised $875. Sales might not have been what they expected.
Humm we may have several more roll overs
Yeah!!!
Where is the draw?
On YouTube or Powerball website.
Thanks
Maybe too many people won
Where is Todd?
He may be sleeping like any other regular person, though I already feel stupid for even suggesting it.
Anyone notice on the powerball website the winning numbers for tonight were removed and reverted back to Wednesdays draw?
Does that happen very often?
You should have kept your dumb reply to yourself. Be ignorant somewhere else.
I noticed that also....so the actual website doesn't show the winning numbers unless you watch the draw video.....get it together Powerball. I noticed that USA Mega never updated as well.
Imagine they say they have to do a redraw lol! And after saying the jackpot is 829m instead of 875m
And where's the updated draw from Todd? My conspiracy brain is doing too much, it must be time for sleep.
I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. It's just that most people are asleep at this hour.
My feelings not hurt. Be gone
Only rolled to 900m sales must not be as good as they expected.
Their cash estimate for tonight was over by 23.6 million.
They botched that for sure......over estimated...
PB prizes not released that's it. I'm calling my congressman!
I've only spent about $15 since the $2 billion Jackpot last year. I feel like I have lottery fatigue.
If sales are as bad as they look, you have a lot of company.
The cash only increased by about 13million between what was initially advertised for tonight and Monday. Which seems real low for a 900m jackpot.
I don't care if new people like socola and payment plan-man thumbing down my post.
You obviously care enough to post about it.
And honestly you were rude for no reason at all.
Rude? You make no sense. I was starting facts. You are making this forum toxic.
I'm here for the lottery and people who like playing lottery. I know you are new from January of 2023. I already blocked you. Play your game somewhere else.
Telling someone to keep their dumb reply to themselves and be ignorant somewhere else is both rude and toxic by even the lowest standard of the definition.
And just because he said someone might be asleep. Thats not just an unreasonable rude reaction, its nuts dude.
He must be your best friend. Your friend did make ignorant reply. Like I said for fourth time I blocked you.
Lol 👌
"They botched that for sure......over estimated... "
As near as I can tell they're outright lying to us. Sales being a lot less than their forecast is one thing, but somewhere around noon on Friday (Todd posted about it at 12:39PM), after they had a day and a half of ticket sales to dial things in they claimed that the cash value had gone up by several million dollars. Not only did they do that when sales should have made it obvious that they were going to come up short, they did it while still publishing the same sales forecast they issued on Wednesday afternoon.
To be clear for anyone who doesn't notice immediately, on Wednesday they said they expected to sell about 98.5 million tickets and that Saturday's cash value would be $62.4 million more than Wednesday's cash value. Two days later the Texas lottery posted an updated PB worksheet still saying they expected to sell the same 98.5 million tickets, but those sales were now going to magically increase the cash value by $73.4 million. What actually happened (and it's not even close to the first time) is that the cash:annuity ratio changed but instead of reducing the annuity value (which is what happens when the available cash buys a smaller annuity), they said the cash value had gone up. As of now the TX website still has the worksheet showing the original sales estimate, the imaginary cash value, and a Monday jackpot of $940 million: https://www.texaslottery.com/export/sites/lottery/Documents/jackpotestimates/pb20230715.pdf
The only honest thing they've done is that despite an initial announcement that the next jackpot would be $940 million it's currently advertised as $900. AFAIK they've never deviated from the initial announcement in the past, but that was when the advertised jackpot got bumped up after the worksheet was published and it was obvious that the next jackpot would be higher.
"The cash only increased by about 13million between what was initially advertised for tonight and Monday. Which seems real low for a 900m jackpot. "
The original announcement for a $940 million jackpot would have had a cash prize of $485.8 million which is $44 million more than the real cash value for Saturay if they had reached the sales estimate. That $13 million increase is from an imaginary target they didn't get close to, so Monday's cash value is about a $32 million increase. The advertised jackpot of $900 million is also based on a lower cash:annuity ratio. If the ratio was the same as it was when Saturday's jackpot was first announced it would be $920 milliion
well we supposedly stand at $900 million..... best of luck to all of us for Monday night
and remember even if you don't win ..... you tried, had some fun dreaming and etc etc etc
Well l didn't do two bad l won $7 from my Ten consecutive draws and I won another $4 last night so I still have like five free draws left and l will buy two more tickets with my $4 win. This brings me to My next theory They over estimated the Jackpot last time But this time they under Estimated the Jackpot. So by Tonight The Jackpot will seat at $1,000,000,000
that is One Billion. dollars Good luck to everyone
What good is it if you cannot give most of it away. What are you going to buy with it. A mansion. Wow. Now you can walk around in 25 rooms instead of 3. An incredibly expensive car. Where are you going to go with it. You cannot just park it anywhere. More trouble that it is worth. You say I will send my kids to college. For what. They will inherit more money than they will never need from you apparently since you cannot spend it.
when you win the lottery you should give it all away to someone who knows how to have a little fun.
The people I am referring to would keep coming back for more. I don't want to finance their stupid behavior.
I have a question go to you smart people .
What happens if I buy a ticket in Ohio today and it's the grand prize winner. But I live in western New York. Am I paying the 3.99% from Ohio then the 10.9% from the balance to New York State? Just curious as I get my ducks in a row lol.
You'd have two options. You could pay the OH income tax on your OH income and pay the (10.9-3.99%) remaining tax to NY, or you could move to OH before claiming the prize and pay the 3.99% just like other OH residents.
