$900 MILLION: Powerball jackpot rises, but sales miss in last draw makes for small increase

Powerball

By Todd Northrop

Powerball lottery players might be wondering this morning why the jackpot only increased by $25 million after nobody won last night's $875 million grand prize.

The answer is that the last jackpot was estimated too high. During the live drawing it was announced that after all proceeds were counted, the final jackpot tally came to $829.4 million — $45.6 million shy of the expected amount. Likewise, the cash value that was initially estimated to reach $452.2 million only in fact came to $428.6 million.

The lower-than-expected jackpot tallies were the result of ticket sales not meeting the optimistic levels initially estimated earlier in the week. A detailed look at how jackpots are estimated and calculated can be found in Lottery Post's video on the subject, How are lottery jackpots calculated?

Given the context of these revised numbers for last night's drawing, the new jackpot estimate of $900 million for Monday's drawing makes more sense, indicating an expected increase of $70.6 million from last night's actual annuity jackpot. The Monday cash value of $465.1 million represents a $36.5 million expected increase from last night's actual cash value.

And despite the missed estimate for Saturday's drawing, $900 million on tap for Monday night is still one of the largest jackpots ever offered for any lottery drawing in history, standing at #7 on the all-time list (see the top 25 annuity and cash value jackpots below.)

Lottery players dreaming what all the cash will look like in their bank account after federal and state taxes are taken out can see an after-tax analysis of the current Powerball jackpot by visiting USA Mega's Powerball Jackpot Analysis page. Rather than simply showing the initial withholdings a lottery winner would face like other "copy cat" websites, the Jackpot Analysis page also includes the additional taxes that will be due after the initial withholdings, and will even allow players to see the taxes due under different filing statuses.

Players looking for the nearest official lottery retailer — or maybe just a different store without such a long line — are urged to use the free Lottery Places app available for iOS, Android, and Windows. The app can find lottery stores in every Powerball state and can search across state lines — something even official state lotteries can't do.

Some states offer direct online sales, allowing players to bypass the store and purchase tickets from home. States that offer this ability include Michigan (Mega Millions and Powerball), Minnesota (Mega Millions and Powerball), Oregon (Mega Millions and Powerball), Texas (Mega Millions and Powerball), and Virginia (Mega Millions and Powerball). Note that some of these links will only work properly for residents of the states mentioned.

Players outside the USA can use a reputable butler service, which provides scanned copies of the purchased lottery tickets securely held on behalf of the customer. In the past, the lottery ticket service was used by people out side the USA to win big jackpots in Oregon and Florida.

In Saturday night's Powerball drawing, there was no jackpot winner, but 3 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Colorado and 2 from Texas.

None of the second-prize tickets was purchased with the Power Play option, which would have doubled their prize to $2 million.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. A complete list of prizes available for matching various numbers can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts and the Powerball Double Play Prize Payouts pages at Lottery Post.

The Power Play option is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered with the Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. By law, California awards all lottery prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold within California and the number of tickets that won at each prize level in the state.

Also, a total of 89 tickets matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball to win a $50,000 prize. Of those tickets, 14 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and 8 were sold in California, where the prize awarded this drawing is $23,769.

The Powerball winning numbers for Saturday, July 15, 2023, were 2, 9, 43, 55, and 57, with Powerball number 18. The Power Play number was 2.

The Saturday Double Play drawing results were 12, 21, 23, 37, and 52, with Powerball number 19. Double Play is a game option currently available in 14 states that lets you play your numbers in a second drawing for an extra $1 per play, with a chance to win up to $10 million in cash. See How to Play Powerball at USA Mega for more information about Double Play.

Powerball is currently offered for sale in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.

Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all time

Monday's Powerball jackpot currently stands as the 7th-largest lottery jackpot in world history.  That position may rise before the drawing, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates, and brisk sales may push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.

Wow. That previous estimate was way off. People just aren't buying them like they used to at these amounts. Anyways, I buy my tickets the very same. Good luck to us all for life changing results. 👍👍

Lottery places app still not working on the Android phone just now.

Perhaps because both MM & PB are sky high folks are having lottery fatigue?

What I'd love to see JUST ONCE is PB take all the X2 balls out for Powerplay as a reward to its loyal customers (insert laugh).

anything is possible, but highly unlikely

but then considering, I've never applied the multiplier to any ticket I've bought........

Over 10 years ago I wrote what I would clear by winning the lottery way before the jackpots were big. I haven't consistently played the lottery like I use to since the Hot Lotto fraud scandal. I chalked up me buying lottery  tickets as a way to fund those sharp criminals that find a way to collect money from the poor.

Since I was reminded a few times of my goal recently it gave me the urge to play again. Here I am, I will try my luck 1 more time. If it works good if not it will certainly remind me again of why I stopped playing and I'm sure I will quit playing.

I'm curious, how many other people do the same thing?

I had that same issue with the lottery app. I switched back to iOS( mainly for work). Maybe you can reach out to your state for assistance. My state helped me get on my android phone, it was the dmv who messed something up on my license in the database.

I don't believe it.  Notice they didn't announce last night too.  Something weird.

With inflation people don't have extra money to buy lottery tickets. Plus, after last big jackpot drawing being a mess,   a lot think its rigged.

JohnGalt3

This makes no sense. I keep track of ticket sales.

For Wednesday's July 12th drawing  $107,649,307 in ticket sales - Powerball + Powerplay sales $750 million jackpot

For last Saturday's  July 15th drawing $167,822,992 in ticket sales - Powerball + Powerplay sales $829 million jackpot

For next Monday July 17th jackpot = $900 million

So from Wednesday to Saturday the jackpot rose $79 million but is only rising $71 million after ticket sales went up by 56% - that makes no sense.

Only $25 million was won on Saturday in both games combined nationwide so that was not the issue either.

I agree... and less discretionary income due to high  inflation could be a reason why ticket sales aren't what they once were.

Adding to the fact that inflation is high, and that extra large jackpots probably aren't seeming all that out of the ordinary to people might be why lottery officials overestimated ticket sales for the next jackpot.  G5

That app was OK, but in reality not needed when you think that most establishments sell lotto tickets in lottery participating states.  Here in this town of 2300 there are four places to play all in a 3km or so area, an easy walk.

Last night used the Ottolball and played @ the store.  Now just manually put them in on-line play.  Usually don't play on Sundays but what the heck!!

When Primm lotto store in CA opens in a couple or so hours will check to see if they have live-feed, don't think they do.   Like to see the long lines there.

Didn't play last night, wont bother with Monday either. These games have become too unappealing.

I do have tickets for Tuesday & Friday for Mega though.

I don't Believe that FOR 1 SECOND. Just like they REDUCED the jackpot to 20 million during COVID, but Never raised it back. Just Added another day. Monday. It's ALL A SCAM.

Inflation is bad. But what inflation doesn't stop is ppl HABITS N DREAMS.. Even when Alcohol was illegal PROHIBITION. The mafia n boot leggers made RECORD SELLS. Even when Marijuana was illegal again dealers was selling it . During the great depression, GAMBLING HOUSES, HORSE TRACKS, AND PROSTITUTION HOUSES NOT ONLY MADE MONEY. THEY WERE GETTING RICH. THATS WHY THE GOVERNMENT TOOK OVER THE LOTTERY IN THE FIRST PLACE... GAMBLING IS ECONOMY PROOF. IT WAS STARTED BY LIL SMALL TIME BLACK HUSTLERS in New York. IT WAS CALLED RUNNING NUMBERS. THE ITALIAN MAFIA AND IRISH MAFIA WANTED IN on it. Big huge BRAWL n Shoot out went down.. But like Alcohol who ended up TAKING OVER?.. THE GOVERNMENT.. So somewhere with this lottery drawing the government needed some money.. And lied about the SALES.. THE GOVERNMENT BIGGEST GANG IN US HISTORY..

Thank you for all your Mathematical calculations but it actually does make Sense. Because they have not stolen the rest of the Jackpot they are holding on it to use it to increase the Jackpot later to $1.1 Billion Dollars How else do you think they plan to give you Lottery Fever 🧐 They will use it later tonight or Tomorrow to Hit you in the head so you buy more tickets lol They are like Hookers and Hookers don't show you all at once lol

Don't get me wrong it's still a lots of money but wishes it was like Canada where you actual received the actual advertise jackpot.

I know a lots of you will say oh I be happy if I Win $1 million well good for you.  I play the lottery to Win Big One because live is to short to be a Mediocre.

Another record Jackpot and only Three second prize winners!  It's hard to get excited when nobody wins.

I have one ticket for Monday when I may have had ten on previous versions of the game that had Jackpots up to $400 million.

For me it is losing fatigue and watching the number of second prizes plummet over the cliff.

Nobody wins and everyone is starting to notice finally.

DMarshal

Good luck to everyone playing on Monday. I always skip it. Tuesday and Thursday are buying days. Monday just seems a bit much. I can also see why the sells dropped. The lack of second place 5/5 number matches is disconcerting. People need a reason to put up their money especially in this economy. But again good luck to those playing Monday, just not more than my luck for the rest of the week. 😂

Losing fatigue with Powerball is a thing since the overall odds of losing is ~96%.   Same with Mega Millions.

The weather is horrendous in Phoenix now (low of 93F + high humidity, high of 118F + humidity), and no online purchasing from AZ State -- people are staying indoors at home and avoiding the outdoors.

From most of the comments - I think people are getting both financially and emotionally invested in the lottery a little more than they should and this should not be the case.

Every time after the drawing is made and when you check your numbers you won nothing ....

If you say "Today was not my day, will try next time" then you are good.

However, if you feel any form of pain and get angry that you did not win. Then I think you are going down the wrong path.

The lottery is supposed to be a form of entertainment and an opportunity to dream with the hope that maybe, Just Maybe 😁, one day you'll win something significant, not necessarily the jackpot.

My advice: Treat the lottery the same way you treat your cans of beer or your pack of cigarette. No one ever complains about their beer or cigarettes.

If you find yourself ranting and raving about the lottery - maybe, Just Maybe - you are a little bit too invested on it.

I did not win anything last night. Tomorrow I will get one $3 Powerball and one $3 mega millions ticket - and life goes on.

I think going into any drawing with the notion of a guaranteed win is where people get it all wrong.

Imagine if everyone that desired to win, won?

Thank you for not playing on Monday, now I have two chances of winning, my chance and your chance 🤣🤣

In addition to Powerball and MegaMillions, here in Louisiana, Lotto has gotten to $1million and Easy 5 to $240,000. They don't often get hat high either so I wonder if not as many of those are selling either.

I got some tickets today and may get some more tomorrow. Can't win if if you're not in it.

Best of luck to all.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this website.  It's crazy if you Win the Jackpot for about $900 million dollars and if you if take the lump sum it's barley touches $300 million dollars after taxes 😒😏

Don't get me wrong it's still a lots of money but wishes it was like Canada where you actual received the actual advertise jackpot.

I know a lots of you will say oh I be happy if I Win $1 million well good for you.  I play the lottery to Win Big One because live is to short to be a Mediocre.

Anyway wishes everyone here on Luck on the next Drawing 🙂

Welcome to the best forum

Tomorrow I will get one $3 Powerball and one $3 mega millions ticket - and life goes on.

wow

jjtheprince14

It won't be won until EVERY possible number combination has been sold.  We have technically "ran out" of winners.

Edwin Castro should play, he would win easily.

I agree. I always go in with the mindset of "it will happen when it's meant to happen." I also know many are putting it all on the line and coming up short. I remember when I won a few grand back around 2010, then now I haven't haven't even gotten the Powerball or Mega in weeks. I'll keep my mindset though because negativity breeds desperation and desperation breeds recklessness, and that's not the direction I nor anyone need to be going.

PS: You're welcome. I'll take the good karma I get from that and use it on my draws for the rest of the week. 😇😁

I don't Believe that FOR 1 SECOND. Just like they REDUCED the jackpot to 20 million during COVID, but Never raised it back. Just Added another day. Monday. It's ALL A SCAM.

The Covid stuff I agree

I don't believe it.  Notice they didn't announce last night too.  Something weird.

The jackpot should be 1.2 billion at least

If you actually want to have $900 million in cash then you better wait until the jackpot annuity hits $3 Billion, taxes and the cash option will reduce any prize by over 70%.

Edwin, his household and relatives should be banned from playing any lottery for the next 30 years 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wavepack

Total all the losses that you've had playing State lotteries.

Now calculate how large your bank account would be had you invested all of that lottery ticket money into bitcoin or Tesla stock.

Hahaha you can't live life doing math like that.

If you go down that route you open up a lot of similar instances of "wastage"

All the money spent on beer

All the money spent of cigarettes

All the money spent at Starbucks

All the money spent on insurance and your car, house, boat etc has never been involved in an insurance event.

The idea is to spend from your entertainment bucket - not from your investment bucket.

Have some fun but not at the expense of your investments or your food budget.

Petrust99

Yeah, unfortunately US lotteries aren't the one that you get what you see.And I never count on advertised number like 900,1billion  Jackpot, it's just less than 1/3 of it.They must be honest to put the cash option amount instead...

It's ridiculous.  Then watch no one hit and $2.6 billion dollars.  They know what they're doing .

The PB worksheet on the TX lottery website still shows the initial forecast for sales of about $197.5 million (and an annuity of 875) for Saturday's drawing, but that was based on increasing from 750 to 875 million. The actual increase  to just under 830 million suggests sales were actually about $126 million. The sales forecast for Wednesday is listed as just under $98 million, so the actual increase was a hair over 28%.

That would suggest that Monday's jackpot would increase by about $103 million, but only if 1. interest rates didn't affect how much more annuity the actual cash will buy, and 2. the day of the drawing has nothing to do with it. So far, (as long as I haven't missed any) sales for a Monday drawing have only been higher than the sales for the previous Saturday once. That was on 10/31/22 when th e advertised jackpot increased from $825 million to an even billion. A week later, when PB was hit for $2.04 billion sales were just slightly lower than the sales for the previous Saturday. Based on that I'd figure the final amount for this Monday is unlikely make it much past $900 million. In fact, based on those past sales and the major shortfall for Saturday I think the only reason for announcing it as $900 million is a lack of shame and the hopes that an even 900 will result in better sales than advertising it as 890 or 895.

Nhan

No offense then why are you here? 🙄 Doesn't make sense at all.  It's not like everyone knew BTC or Tesla was going to HUGE.

JohnGalt3

Because in today's America people lie and get away with it:

"The virus came from a wet market."

"Masks will prevent the spread."

"If you get the vaccine you can't give the Wuhan/Fauci Flu to anyone else."

"If we lock everything down it's over in a few weeks"

"If you are hospitalized then a <snip>tail of drugs that will kill you but make Fauci a lot of money is the answer."

"There is no such thing as election fraud."

No offense, but sometimes you actually have to think for yourself, sunshine.

With a 900 Million I can have a 69 Camaro built, buy a restored 72 Cutlass 442 W30 Oldsmobile and build my 95 Camaro Z28 the way I want! 💰💰💰💰💰💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾😊

Wow!  I didn't realize that stuff was getting that expensive!  $900 million and thats all you could buy with it?

Wow! Expensive!

I would get my car fixed and have everything working and then I would buy a good used second car.  After that I would have lots left over.

OH well, so they were off a bit and it's now in the $900M range with $465M cash value...That take home is going to be enjoyable for the remainder of my time on the planet, as well as a few family members and close friends.

Sorry JJ, ya didn't make the cut, no matter how easy it is to win.👍

I have my $3 PB ticket - QP of course - don't know when I was born so can't use birthday dates. Also one foot is longer than the other - so shoe size is not consistent.

If I wake up and I have the JP winning ticket, I will sleep for an extra ten minutes then get my ass to work 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Good luck to all LP players.

The Texas Powerball estimate showing 1 billion for Wednesday if no one wins. I got my 1 auto pick willy Wonka ticket with the power Play option. 🤞🏾 I have a feeling we're about to see a 2 billion jackpot soon. It starting to seem normal for these kind of levels. Very fishy 🤔
