The New York Lotto is two rollovers away from its all-time high of $55 million.
The current Lotto jackpot of $47 million is the result of 19 consecutive rollovers. The jackpot started at $3 million on Wednesday, March 03, 2004, and since then no ticket has matched all 6 numbers drawn.
The next drawing of New York Lotto will take place Wednesday, May 12 at 11:21 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
The record New York lottery jackpot was set on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, when two lucky players matched all six numbers to split the record $55 million prize. The winning tickets were sold in Ridgewood and Amherst.
In that same drawing, 3 players matched 5 of 6 numbers plus the bonus number for a $82,919.00 prize.
It is anticipated that after the $66 million Mega Millions jackpot was hit on Friday evening, New York Lottery players will turn their attention to the new high jackpot game in their state, New York Lotto.
The odds of winning a prize for a single ticket is 1 in 96, but since New York Lotto is played in groups of two tickets, the odds of winning a prize on a single play (2 tickets) is 1 in 48.
The odds of winning the jackpot (based on a single play of two tickets) is 1 in 22,528,737.
The NY pick 6 lotto is pathetic, and most NYer's would agree with me. The odds are horrible, the rollovers are horrible, but the thing that really gets me is the lower tier prizes, they are just downright insulting. Every time I see a commercial or hear an advertisement for the NY pick 6 lotto I just cringe. Sorry for being so negative, but I feel like we Nyer's deserve better.
I agree that there are several negatives, when compared with other state lotto games, but I think that 1 in 22 million odds for the top prize are not bad, especially for the largest lottery state in the USA.
The odds for winning the jackpot compare very favorably to other states like California (1 in 41.4 million), Texas (1 in 47.7 million), and Florida (1 in 22.9 million).
You will find others here who complain about the NY Lotto, and there are valid complaints, but when the jackpot gets this large those complaints are moot.
states make the odds to win their lotto jackpots so high to create huge strings of drawings without a jackpot winner, and when the jackpot gets high, more people will play, which will cause an even bigger rollover, which will generate more sales, and the chain will continue until some lucky stiff (or stiffs) wins (or win) it.
No, that wasn't the record jackpot - it may have been a special drawing, which wouldn't qualify. There's also the Millenium Millions jackpot, which was much higher, but that too does not qualify as a NY Lotto jackpot.

The total prize pool is 40% of sales. I don't even think of playing it until the jackpot reaches $35 million.

Now, if you don't believe me, and you don't believe the New York Lottery, then I would suggest that you're challenging my statement just for the sake of challenging me.

Well I agree that NY Lottery is not the best, I dont use to play it, but they have a nice pot right now and I played, let see and win.

I should also add that the record NY Lotto jackpot was a special $90 million drawing (annuity-only) in 1991.

Todd:
There was a $72 million drawing IIRC in 1997, which was a regular drawing and split four ways.

There WAS a $72 million drawing in 1997. I should remember because I was delivering Lottery New$.
Well, you're not remembering the NY Lotto then - maybe some other game.
I found the New York Lotto page that proves my point:

Todd:
The list shows only jackpots from 2001 to the present.
Among the jackpots not listed was $41 million in 1985.
