Early Sunday morning the Delaware Lottery posted the MM jackpot at $1.6 million and one of our members posted that on LP. They were told somebody in Delaware jumped the gun because something like that happened with PB. But nobody called fake news . A better term fake news might be sensationalist, exaggerating or inaccurate.

It is not evident from the notes why Delaware would suddenly withhold taxes while at the same time not having a state tax on the lottery. Clearly they are not withholding federal taxes either. I did not ask what the final tax bill was. So, Delaware does not tax lottery wins unless it taxes lottery wins. Cool beans.

Delaware changed the law in 2009 and does NOW tax lottery winnings. One can still remain anonymous though.

Delaware only withholds the required 25% for Federal tax. You pay the Delaware state income taxes on your winnings when you file an income tax return the following year. For the states that do not tax lottery winnings, I believe only Texas and New Hampshire have allowed winners to claim anonymously through a trust.

I think the only state that allows you to remain anonymous AND does not tax your winnings is Delaware. Lucky ducks.
