Whatever losses you claim just have enough proof of tickets to cover it in case they wanna audit you...if you win 100k you can claim that in losses but best beleave they will audit you so dont get outrageous with your claim

I agree with gatorsrok. An audit isn't a problem if you have a big box of tickets reflecting the exact value of the losses you deduct. I can't imagine ever being rich enough that that x-number of thousands of dollars saved wouldn't be worth throwing my losers into a cardboard box instead of the trash.

Scratch offs as a tax write off?
You can offset your winning with losses, but you must have the losing tickets as receipts. You are very likely to incur an audit with this kind of write-off.

Well I think oldghost has an idea and plan. I can find the contact info for the department that would be the one to audit their records. BTW knew someone today who hit a $1k win on the 100X my idiot self went out and bought 10.... two thirty dollar winners in that mix... WAY brutal

Nice win oldghost. The big wins on the Monopoly game are hard to come by. @skeptic - I think Jim's CPA is basically advising Jim to not deduct his losses. Basically, I think his advice is going to result in Jim paying more taxes than he would otherwise owe. You should keep the tickets and a log if you want to get a good result in an audit.

"Peeking" is scanning unsold cards to determine winners
http://www.necn.com/news/business/Massachusetts-Lottery-Audit-Finds-Problem-Areas-280961412.html The odds of winning are already terrible and with this peeking practice on, I don't think players have any shot at winning at all.

Why doesn't the lottery allow you to keep big winners ?
I think its for book keeping/Security/tax purposes/audit purposes. I notice the stores that sell big winners 600 will photocopy tickets and hang those up.

Losing tickets are OK - but you might need to prove you bought them - as in receipts - best receipts would be by debit card, it shows part or all of your card numbers ......they reserve the right to even audit your debit card or bank statements to verify purchases ......let's say you win 100K .......and use 50K of losing tickets on the long form ...... can you prove you bought $50K worth ? say your net income is $70K ........hello ! You mean you lived the whole year on $20K income. The IRS s

What's up guys? I drastically cut back playing. Only been buying the $5 Full of Crap on fill ups and today we checked out the new Walmart Neighborhood Market that opened in the Villages yesterday on CR 466A to see if they sent any good rolls. Nope, still duds. I think I've played now a total of 10 of these $5 crap tickets since the game came out and haven't even won $5 back. It's pathetic. Given what the FL Lotto is doing changing disclosure rules there doesn't seem to be a legit audit sys
