Mass. lawmakers to challenge lottery horse-race game
Key Massachusetts state lawmakers signaled yesterday that they intend to rein in the Massachusetts Lottery's plans to launch a virtual horse-racing game on Keno-style monitors later this year.At a State House hearing, the lawmakers questioned the lottery's legal authority to launch the game and whether the game should be allowed to proceed because of the potential impact on the state's struggling horse-racing industry.''You've overextended your authority to roll out this game, said Representati

Return on Investment
The percentage of sales distributed as prizes varies from state to state. In New York state, according to their latest full year results for their traditional lottery (doesn't include video gaming at casinos), they sold $6.76 billion in tickets and paid just under $4 billion in prizes. This works out to a little over 59% of revenue paid out in prizes. This doesn't mean every game pays out 59% of its sales in prizes. Every game has a different payback percentage. The payback will vary in the r

Texas lawmaker aims to bring video gaming to state
If I lived in Texas I'd welcome the video gaming. If government can raise revenue in creative ways to cover their reckless spending sprees I'd be all for it. I would even support the legalization of dope. Look at all the money that could be made there by taxing it. And look at all the money that could be saved in unnecessary law enforcement, legal, justice and incarceration expenses. It ain't like it's ever gonna stop dopers from doing dope anyway, anymore than prohibition stopped drinkers

State lotteries losing revenue to 'jackpot fatigue' and casinos
Lotteries, by and large, rely on most players being near totally ignorant of the odds of the games being offered combined with horrible payback low as 40%. For a long time the strategy has worked due in large part to the novelty of games offering higher and higher jackpots at a nominal cost. $1 for a dream. However, that model is waning as the jackpot amounts no longer generate much excitement. $10 million annuity was once a big deal (yes really, way back), then later over $100 million (long

Pool players ponder Powerball hypocrisy
Nobody was betting on $212 million at The Pour House on Friday.A week after Charleston police and State Law Enforcement Division agents raided a pool tournament at the Savannah Highway tavern, three patrons at the bar shook their heads no over their beer. N.C. Senate approves Internet sweepstakes ban
The North Carolina Senate overwhelmingly approved legislation Monday to shutter hundreds of new businesses that bill supporters argue are offering just another form of illegal video poker where people buy phone or Internet time, then play games on computer screens to win cash and prizes. By a vote of 47-1, the chamber continued its long history of opposing video gambling, this time through electronic and computer-based devices springing up at new sweepstakes cafes or business centers. Nor

A three-year money-losing streak for the West Virginia Lottery has come to an end, as the agency saw an upswing in revenues for the just completed 2010-11 budget year, Lottery commissioners learned Tuesday. Fueled by the enormous success of table games at Charles Town's Hollywood Casino, and by a surge in sales for traditional scratch-off games, the Lottery saw a 3 percent jump in total revenue for the budget year, for a total of $1.39 billion. Things are picking up, it looks like, a litt

Decision on privatizing Illinois Lottery 'within days'
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn could select a private firm to manage the Illinois State Lottery as soon as next week, but some lawmakers would rather keep the lottery under state government. Two bidders are vying for the right to privately manage the Illinois State Lottery. Earlier this week at a public hearing held in Chicago, the Northstar Lottery Group and the Camelot Group both presented their proposals to a state commission. The Northstar Lottery Group is a combination of three different com
