Gambling pushed banker to steal $1.4 million
Deb Anderson didn't begin her 27-year banking career as a thief. She started as a teller at Pioneer Bank, the lender in her hometown of 3,300 on the outskirts of Sioux City. She won promotions, despite a lack of college or any formal training in banking or accounting. By 1991 she was named cashier - a respected and powerful job at most community banks. I had a tremendous amount of trust in her and her position, bank President Richard Aadland said. But in 1996, 18 years into her career

Long odds don't bother 'Mega' fans
Charles Millard wasn't under any illusion. My chance is a zillion to one, the 60-year-old Johnson City man said on Monday as he bought a ticket for tonight's historic $355 million Mega Millions drawing. Still, across the Greater Binghamton region, players such as Millard lined up Monday at convenience stores and newsstands for a chance to win the largest pot in New York Lottery history, even though they acknowledged their odds were as long as Binghamton being named the sunshine capital o

Widow recounts slaying of CT Lottery chief in new book
Delaware native Denise Brown has always enjoyed writing, but becoming a published author has been a bittersweet journey for the 47-year-old. Although she's glad that her memoir, The Unspeakable, is available to readers, she would've preferred that there had never been a need to write it. That's because her memoir, released last month by the University of Delaware Press, is about the minutes, hours, days and years following the violent death of her husband, Otho R. Ott Brown in 1998.

Lottery revenue important to a host of businesses
If the New York Lottery vanished tomorrow, many store owners would suffer. Their businesses rely on the 6 percent commission they get from lottery sales. I would not be in business without the lottery, said Mike Palencar, who owns two convenience stores in Webster, N.Y. He estimates that lottery commissions amount to just 5 percent of his stores' total profit. But sales commissions aren't the only benefit for the lottery's 16,000 vendors statewide. People coming to the stores to buy lott

N.Y. Gov. vows to review Lottery operations
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is pledging to review the New York Lottery's operations amid bipartisan calls for reform prompted by a media report revealing that billions of dollars in bets were kept off the Lottery's books. Several state legislators said yesterday that the Lottery Division needed to fully account for all the cash generated by its video lottery terminals, after it was reported that only a portion of wagers was included in the Lottery's financial reports. This is a little

Indiana Gov. wants to sell lottery
As details continued to leak out Wednesday about Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels' plan to privatize the Hoosier Lottery, reaction from area lawmakers was less than encouraging. Daniels is expected to unveil the proposal which would likely raise money for higher education at 11 a.m. today. Wells County Republican Rep. Jeff Espich was briefed on the idea a few weeks ago along with other key lawmakers. His understanding of the plan was to entice a private entity to run the lottery in exchan

S.C. only state with no lottery sales on Election Day
Reason for the law is unclear South Carolinians can pick politicians and decide a slew of state issues Tuesday, but they can't elect to buy a lottery ticket or a bottle of booze. State law prohibits the sale of both on statewide election days. While a ban on selling liquor isn't unique to South Carolina, it is very likely that shutting down the state lottery is. And the reason lottery tickets are forbidden isn't nearly as clear as a banned bottle of vodka. I think we're the only sta
