Lottery jackpot a silver lining for 11 Red Sox fans
Everyone has favorite numbers, but this is ridiculous.
On Oct. 3, 11 players bought Mass Cash tickets with the numbers 1, 4, 6, 8 and 9. All of the nine who have claimed their $100,000 prizes picked the numbers themselves rather than letting the lottery computer pick random numbers.
Lottery officials said some winners said they played that combination because it represents five Red Sox players whose retired numbers hang above right field at Fenway Park: Bobby Doerr, Joe Cronin, Johnny Pesk ...

Millionaire janitor buys school new track
Includes video report
The lunch hour is over and Evergreen High School custodian Tyrone Curry gets out his broom for a quick sweep up.
I try to make sure it's spotless and it's ready for the kids, he said.
After cleaning, he's off to his second passion: coaching the track and field team.
I just like staying busy, Curry said with a laugh.
But in reality, he doesn't have to work. He's a millionaire.
I know my wife says, 'Oh, you don't really have to work' and I say, 'Yeah. I d ...

Just-released Indians prospect cashes $1M lottery ticket
It could not have been easy for Joel Torres to learn that he was being released from the Cleveland Indians minor league system late last month.
But he probably couldn't have been launched to the unemployment line with a better parachute. A month earlier, the 21-year-old outfielder had won $1 million in the New York State Lottery's Sweet Million game after buying a ticket in Queens while visiting his mother over the winter.
Yes, that sound you heard was mothers everywhere asking if we see w ...

Instead of season tickets, Delvin Delamar of Irving and Kathy Clark of Amarillo, the two winners, will be allowed to have seats in the NFL team's war room during draft day selections, be invited to a draft-day party, plus get free lodging and transportati ...

Illinois lottery winner sends kids to Cubs game
As Loyd Elam watched a group of children board a chartered bus bound for the Cubs game at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Wednesday, he looked as if he might change his mind and hop on to go with them.
But Elam stayed behind in Lincoln to look for them later on television, hoping to spot them wearing their yellow hats, after paying for the trip with money he won nearly 20 years ago playing the Illinois Lottery. Since winning $7 million in 1991, Elam has been paying for similar trips for 35 to 40 ...

Columnist proposes lottery for new Vikings stadium
by James Lileks, Star Tribune
A lottery for a new Vikings stadium? Sure. I'll buy a ticket. Don't know why the governor is opposed to racinos, unless it's opposition to slots. I don't play them it's like giving someone a dollar, asking him to make beeping noises for 10 seconds, then watching him put the dollar in his pocket and walk away. But if you put up a bank of Viking-themed machines, even idiots like myself might play. Sorry, we're talking about gambling: especially idiots like myself, ...
