Over the opposition of two major gaming corporations, an Assembly committee voted 8-5 Thursday to let voters decide whether to legalize a state lottery.
All Democrats on the Assembly Constitutional Amendments Committee backed Assembly Joint Resolution 5, while all five Republicans opposed it.

Wyoming lottery bill killed once again
Casper resident Larry Griffith thought surely this was the year for Wyoming to finally join a multi-state lottery.
Griffith has been buying Nebraska lottery tickets for years, and said Wyoming is losing big money to adjacent states.
So Griffith was not happy when the state House on Monday voted 31-27 to kill yet another attempt to legalize a lottery in the state.

Allen, N.C. lottery champion, dies
State Rep. Bernard Allen, who co-sponsored legislation to create North Carolina's lottery and then pushed for a committee to make sure the proceeds were wisely spent, died late Friday, a House aide said Saturday.
Allen, D-Wake, appeared to have been recovering well from a mild stroke Sept. 23. But a blood clot entered his lung Friday night, killing him instantly, according to House administrative clerk Carmen Cauthen.

TV network chosen to air N.C. Lottery drawings
The Triangle's CBS affiliate has been chosen to produce and air the nightly number drawings for the North Carolina Education Lottery, with the first lottery broadcast coming later this month with a drawing for the multi-state Powerball game.

In its first few months of operation, the N.C. Education Lottery is spending most of its money on staff salaries, contracted services and new vehicles.
