Last night on the TLC cable channel was a show with master magician/illusionist David Blaine. One of the segments had David walking up to a man waiting for a cab and asks "What is your dream?" The man responds, "To win the lottery".

David Blaine sends him into a nearby store to buy three random scratch off lottery tickets. When the man comes out with the three tickets, David asks him to pick his favorite ticket of the three. David gives the man a 'magic coin' to scratch the favorite ticket with. The ticket required getting 3 like symbols to win the associated prize. Scratching the ticket in front of the camera, at first it looks like the man doesn't win, but David then points out a "coin" symbol above one of the prizes. He then points out that the ticket instructions say if you get a "coin" symbol you win all 10 prizes. He adds all 10 prizes up and they total $1600. The man is a bit disbelieving. The camera then follows him and David into a local lottery payout office, the ticket is verified, and the man is given $1600.

Ok, it must have been an illusion, but I would like to know how he did that...

For more information you can do a Google search on David Blaine Lottery Ticket ...

    It probably was an illusion if the guy waiting on a cab bought the tickets at a nearby store, scratched one with a magic coin and then walked into a local lottery office to get his $1600 with in the time of a TV show.Wink

    Did they show him picking out the tickets in the store?  Was the lottery office close to or in the same town as the store of purchase?  It's called mass hallucination.

    * you don't need more tickets *
    * just the right ticket *

      Yes, the camera followed the man into the store as he looked at all the tickets in the plexiglas counter case prior to selecting his three tickets. I think it was in New York City (not sure of this) as many of David Blaine's TLC TV segments were filmed there. It looked like the lottery payout office was within a short distance as they walked to it (again, New York City?).

      This had to be an expensive illusion because to get a $1600 winner you would have to scratch through a lot of tickets...and then to substitute the winning ticket by slight of hand he would have had to have known which ticket to have a winner of...and the camera did show them scratching the ticket.
