I just wanted to add another thought. The problem with excluding all external images is that you may be removing the primary feature of the post by doing that. For example, if the post is a screenshot showing a software feature, then the most important part of the post will be gone. Getting rid of all external images filters too much.
The point of delaying external images (which is a technique I created myself) is so that you can get control of the page very quickly, and interact with it without worrying about wait for the images to load. At that point, once you have control of the page when the text finishes loading, it's pretty much irrelevant whether images are loading in the background or not, as you're reading the page.
