Immigration status is a hot debate in this country. It varies from state to state, but many states do not have laws against illegal aliens claiming lottery prizes. Here in California an illegal immigrant collected a $2,000,000 prize and two days later was deported to Mexico, with his money. In North Carolina, lawmakers are trying to put into place a ban against undocumented people collecting prizes, whereas in South Carolina such a law already exists. Keep in mind that a common lottery scam is people giving money to a person who claims to not be able claim a lottery prize b/c they are illegal. Folks purchase the winning ticket off of them to find out that the ticket is fake or has no prize to claim. I'm not defending the intelligence of the victim in these cases, but it does happen.

My thought is that if you can purchase the ticket you should be able to collect the prize. The money spent still goes to state and education funds that the state puts towards them. So, regardless of who you are - if you can buy you can win.

What are your thoughts?

Maybe you should be voicing your concerns with your Elected Representatives in Sacramento & Washington!

The money should be taken from them and put into a fund to help the families of all the Americans that have been murdered by illegal aliens.

        Then deport them.

If you are Illegaly in the country..the key word here would be Illegaly like not legal??? So any thing you do in the country...would be Not legal, so buying a ticket would be not legal for you to do in the first place..am I missing something???

forget what "they" say about youWhat you say about you?...

          Now, does it count??

What about those people who travel here from other countries like Canada, France, Germany, etc. and buy tickets? They aren't legal citizens either. What if someone from Germany who is on vacation wins? Aren't they entitled to their winnings if they win? I have friends who buy lottery tickets from Canada and they are not legal citizens of that country. If they had won shouldn't they get the money? Honestly, I don't believe there are any rules in place that say you have to be an American citizen to buy tickets. If there is such a rule, please post a link.

I'll cash it for them,  as long as it unsigned.

                      No, otherwise.

I swear Todd has posted a news story or two of non-Americans playing the lottery and winning and collecting their winnings. I have not heard of a rule or law that states that you have to be a citizen to play or win, so I'm not seeing how it is illegal.

No. Unless they are here on a valid VISA or Passport...which would allow them to be here legally.
