Lots of people have been e-mailing me about the California raffle tickets that are being sold to them every time they buy a SuperLotto Plus ticket.
Apparently, the California Lottery held the first raffle drawing on Sunday (and will continue holding a raffle drawing every Sunday until June 16th), but they have not posted the winning numbers anywhere.
In fact, I contacted the California Lottery today, and they confirmed that the results will not be posted on their site until Wednesday, so the only way you can check your raffle ticket is to take it to a self-service ticket machine and scan it. (And even then, do you really think it's a good idea to trust the machine without seeing a list of the actual winning numbers?)
I cannot convey the strangeness of the California Lottery's actions strongly enough. They held a drawing on Sunday, but will not publish the winning numbers until Wednesday??
The lady I spoke to at the lottery said the reason was that they are having "problems with the Web site", but upon further inspection, I don't think so. I think they are deliberately waiting to post the results.
If you check the official rules for the raffle on their Web site, they have a table that shows that the results will always be posted "by" the following Wednesday after the Sunday drawing.
Meanwhile, I'm sure everyone getting these raffle tickets will be scratching their heads wondering where the winning numbers are posted. It's just plain weird.
I did confirm that there will be a total of 20 winning numbers in each raffle drawing. Each ticket matching a winning raffle number will be awarded a $500 prize.
