Somebody posted a system not long ago that described the idea of compiling the best four number patterns in your lottery and playing those as a regular play in expectation of hitting the lower prizes. Can't find it now and the question struck today if we're playing four number patterns derived from 6 numbers, aren't we adding numbers to the set?
It would seem we have to be since playing a 6 ball lottery we need 6 numbers and a five ball lottery we need 5 numbers.To put it another way, any time we play 4 numbers out of a six number set, we have 15 four number combinations to cover and need to add a number for Cash 5, or two for 6 ball lotteries to complete our set. Playing five numbers out of six produces six combinations.
At any rate we did the four number sets and found the sets that produced the best threes, weren't good at producing four ball wins or jackpots. The sets that produced the best at four ball wins, were only moderate at 3 ball hits and poor at JPs.
This held true doing the 5 number sets. Still curious about the 6 number sets, we dredged up the data. This is the Texas Cash5 data through 1167 draws. Its sorted to pull out the best producing set in each category of 3 ball, 4 ball, and jackpots wins (15, 350, JP).
Here are the top 50 in each category:

The sets that produce the best three ball hits, aren't very good in the other categories (only 6 JPs were produced by the first 381 sets here), and those which produce best a 4 ball hits, are only moderate at three balls and poor JP hits (7 JPs among the top 230 in this category).
But the sets that produce the most jackpots produce moderately well in the three category and good/fair/okay (your choice) in four ball wins.
So APFJ.....Always Play For Jackpots!
If your playing a 6 ball lottery, that means expanding the 6 number set to 7 or 8 numbers. Even with 8 numbers you can find a decent balanced wheel for about the same as playing a four of six pattern and adding numbers. How long it will take to find the 8 numbers is the real question.
This may take a while. We're at 1 2 3 7 blah, blah, blah, blah.......100,000 sets already.G

The issue is having the right numbers between our picks and that is hard and we can never know for sure. Well is it really so?
Let me tell you the story of a draw over here in Poland a while ago. It was 5/42 game and 9 tickets hit the right numbers. 8 of them were played by one guy and he played one combination only. People find it hard to understand why he did it, though he or she was perfectly right. The prize was split among those 9 tickets of course and the other guy got 35,000 while our man or woman received 8 x 35,000 plus 8 x 4 of 5 win plus 8 x 3 of 5 win. Makes a lot of sense if you sort of know what you're playing is right. If he were the only one to hit he'd have lost nothing just split it among himself so to speak.

The chart agrees with you! And its not hard to see. (Let me apologize first for that chart. When you're dealing with 100,000s of rows of data you're eyes become accustomed to the spreadsheet look. It doesn't always translate well to copy and pasted charts in forum. So my bad for not thinking ahead on that.)
But let me make it easier and attempt to prove what you just said. To do that we'll take the top 3 ball hit producer 4 14 15 20 22 26 which brings 58 three ball hits.
If we look down that first section we see a core numbers 4 15 20 26 that include....

You can tweak a couple of numbers in the six ball set and still produce similar results. I'm sure there are others, but the 4 15 20 26 core group jumps out since it appears in each section, as these from the 4 ball section.....

I do not look at numbers the way you do but it does not mean you are wrong and I am right or the other way round. Just different approaches. I never wheel numbers just stick to what I get after analyzing data subsets and not numbers per se. It happens quite often that I get combinations consisting of nearly the same numbers as the final output and I play them. In most cases these are my top plays.

Such a confusing comment is best ignored because what I posted has NOTHING to do with how you look at numbers, or how I look at numbers.
And this is NOT MY system. Its my interpretation of a posted open ended system. If you have a different view, post it. But, please, address the system.
Realistically, if you ask 100 people, 75 have their own idea of how to look at numbers. So take it to heart you are normal in that regard.
And if you don't like wheeling, you aren't alone there either. But many people do wheel their sets so this system may be an option for them.
Apparently the OP had some success with it which caused him to post it. And it is along the same idea I use in Pick 3 and Pick 4, so I took the time to do the workup and post the end result.

There is really nothing new about it, excepting the difference in stats.

No problem. 10 years ago you had to write a really efficient program, multi-threaded to use all your available processors, and count your clock cycles to grind thru all the possible combinations. Now with 12-core and 16-core computers you can do these type of calculations in minutes instead of hours and days as before.
I think another idea is to group the 35 numbers into groups of 7 and find the best five groups of 7 where one ball from each group hits in the draw. With today's modern computer if you can afford it it should be feasible. The 5/39 and lower games could be prime targets for big number analysis now.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply I was forced to use XP. I keep XP machines for use with the laser and CNC router.
I have two Win10 machines for surfing and printing, and a Win 7 that's crippled but has Excel installed. The laptop with Vista and Visual Studio crapped out. Hard drive crashed.
And it helps that I have a son who enjoys computers too.
I just write, throw it on a machine and let it run. Haven't considered a new computer.
But I do have a birthday coming up!

A multi-threaded program could churn out things pretty faster on a multi-core(2x logical threads), pure SSD based, high RAM...
e.g., the time to run probability and statistics look up runs on millions of MM,PB combinations(full runs without algorithms to derive) can be cut short by 3x or 6x
In long run, 1000$ can save so much time than expected ...

I do appreciate the advice. Its great to see people who want to help. I did have a look-see. And didn't see anything that wowed me. So I'm in no hurry and not computer needy.
We've asked before for a programming segment for the board. We don't have one. And personally, I agree since it would only lead to numerous posts turning into (arguments and) opinions on what programs, what language, what computer, and all inclusive, "my program is better/faster than yours," and, "if you want to be as good as me, you'll do this."
I'm perfectly happy doing things the way I do them.
I'm not riding anybodys clock, so there's no money involved how fast (or slow) it gets done.
It keeps the brain activity up (which is supposed to be a good thing).
And its not a contest.
So please don't PM me about a donation page to get a new computer! I'll be happier with comments on the stats and ways they could be used!
