This is a heads-up that we will be installing a very important update to the Lottery Post website at around 10:00 am Eastern Time today (Monday, Jan. 22, 2024).

I'm giving an advance warning just because it is possible for extended downtime. If everything goes smoothly it will be only a minute offline, but if there's a problem and we need to roll back to the current version of the website it will take a bit longer.

I'll post more about this following the maintenance work, but in the meantime just plan to have anything important posted before 10:00 this morning.

Edit: To be clear, if you don't notice any significant changes after the updates are installed, then we did a good job. This is an complete upgrade to the technology platform, with significant coding changes to the stuff that makes the website work. This particular update is not about new features, it's about keeping the website stable and efficient. So if you see it and are thinking "that's boring, nothing new", then that's a good thing. If you see exciting things, that will be bad.

The maintenance work is complete, as the new updates were installed and everything appears to be running smoothly.

However, please be aware that there are very significant coding changes made, so if something does not work properly please report it. You can feel free to post a reply in this thread with your feedback, or as always you can also send me a private message. The Contact Us page is also a good way to communicate.

You can find the official log of changes on the What's New page.

Aside from a myriad of tiny changes that are a part of any new release of Lottery Post, the major things you can see are the improved Lottery Post Videos page, which now shows every video instead of just the most recent ones, and the dropping of all support for Internet Explorer.

So if you are one of the 0.001% of people still refusing to let go of that ancient web browser, Lottery Post may seem like a strange-looking place to you now. Lottery Post has been one of the final holdouts for letting go of Internet Explorer support, because our goal is to always be inclusive of whoever is visiting, but at this point the usage of IE is now so low that it is mostly bots and international scammers still using IE.

This update has been many months in development, so it is a relief to finally get it into production. The goal was to bring Lottery Post up to date with the latest versions of our technology platform, ensuring longevity and smooth operation no matter how many people are simultaneously visiting.

(Determining performance improvements are impossible until tested under full load in production, which is why I'm finally able to see the results of the work accomplished.)

There were two major types of performance work that went into this upgrade:
- Using coding techniques that are only available now that we are using the current version of our technology platform
- Better asynchronous coding techniques that are now implemented in more places
For the second bullet, that means that as more and more people visit the website simultaneously, the web server can handle their tasks better in parallel. Something slow that one person does (like running a long search) does not slow down other people doing their own things.

This is a technique that was certainly being used before, but with this upgrade I literally went through the entire code base looking for code that was either not coded asynchronously, or could be coded better. That work has the potential of keeping the entire website snappy when under a huge load, as well as making it more resilient to unexpected problems.

You can see the performance of any page by going to the very bottom, where the creation time of every page is measured down to the ten-thousandth of a second.

My impression is that the site feels "snappier" as reflected in the render times at the bottom of the page. Good Job!

I followed your link to the "What's New" page and read some entries. One note, in the January 21 entry, there appear to be a couple typos as follows:

, but it is an important accomplishment since periotic upgrades to the latest technology will ensure the longevitiy of the website.

I'm guessing those should be "periodic" and "longevity."

Again, nice job on the code update. I know that was a huge amount of work. Congrats on the successful rollout.
