'I didn't win the lottery. It would have been nice if I had,' declared Wexfordman, John Godkin, this week in response to a rumour that circulated like wildfire after a winning ¬5.2 million ticket was bought in the town over a week ago.
'It's only a rumour. I definitely didn't win it,' said the North End United manager, adding that he knew how the story started. 'A couple of fellas I know said it that Saturday night and it just got out. It gathered legs really quickly.'
The telephone at his home in Liam Mellows Park never stopped ringing with enquiring callers and well-wishers. Members of his family, including his mother, were also contacted.
'I have cousins in New York and they heard it,' said John. 'A friend in Portugal even texted me. It was annoying and really frustrating although it has been quiet over the last few days. I think at this stage most people believe me when I tell them I didn't win.'
