Anyone in need of food who qualified went to a central warehouse or local distribution center and picked up surplus gov't food. Whatever the gov't purchased for warehouse supply. Cheese, bags of beans, flour or whatever else they had which I do not know. Being on federal assistance back then was not discussed with neighbors.

If they really wanted to reduce fraud, they'd get rid of the program and quit hassling people trying to grow their own. BTW, the biggest fraudsters are behind the scenes running it, not the people you see at the stores. No more shopping for your old, sick auntie. She'll just have to get better and do her own ... or starve.
