Just an observation: whenever the topic of charitable giving is mentioned, there is usually some person that self-righteously exclaims, I am not here to save the world ...or, I gotta concentrate on investing the money for my future or some such self centered rubbish. I live in a small suburb also....I dont neccessarily donate alot, but what I do is make sure that most of my expenses (food, gas, lottery tickets, medical supplies, clothes, etc...) are purchased within the city limits....therefore I support the community and the local taxes

Intelligent charitible givings doe not include being a sugar daddy for anyone. A Lottery winner can't save the world...my point was a sensible attitude towards helping those in need is good whether or not one wins big money. But, newly found millionaires who might not have thought too often about the plight of others owe it to themselves to get atuned to their new reality and do the right thing. One thing that many people don't realize is that the $5 you or I might donate multiplied by millions counts just as much. So those who don't dig deep when they have very little probably won't feel too generous if they win big. Regarding where or what a wealthy person should contribute to is nobody's business, but most lottery winners don't have an endless pot of gold either. Lewis the manager of the store that sold the winning ticket spoke of giving money to the community, not the Powerball multi-millionaires. If Lottery winners don't get involved with some form of intelligent charitable giving on a regular basis, it would be very sad for them. Not only is it wise from a tax point of view, but giving money to the Foodbanks, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Homeless Shelters,Foundtions for the Blind, Kids with Cancer, Scholarship Funds for Poor Kids etc, helps you justify... I would dontate to charities...not my city....my city is not associated with charities that I like. Such as The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, American Heart Association...Charities run on donations...my city doesn't...

It is individual's choice what he wants to do and what he does not want to do. Others should not say that you should give to commuinty or should not give to community. Also I hear from many people that why should I give to a community which did not give me. I fail to understand this logic. Let me make a wild guess, some how, giving money to a university or medical facility gets you a better taax break. Some how, it has to be the answer. Too many names of rich people on buildings to be otherwise.
