I have done a num ber of these studies over my lottery career and several factors that can and do influence results were not mentioned.

First - retailer density. This is one of the most significant factors in sales. Some areas do not allow or just don't have many convenience and the other types of stores that sell lottery products.

Place of sale vs. residence: Relatively few people actually reside in many of our downtown (high rise office areas) zip codes but lots of people wor... [ More ]

My view on lottery wagering may be unconventional, but here it is. First, I am in very good control of my lottery wagering. I wager $36 a week as follows: $6 a week on Cash 5 in Colorado for Monday through Saturday draws ($1 each). $15 twice a week ($30 total) on Wednesday($5) and Saturday($5) drawings for 5 plays at $1 each on Colorado Lotto (6/42) and Powerball with Power Play, 5 plays @ $2 each totalling $10, both Wednesday and Saturday. I play one set of personal numbers and 4 quick picks on... [ More ]

I hear ya!

It's tough to see how you can have a dangerous addition to the lottery, but I suppose a few scratch-card players exhibit a bit of dangerous behavior when they buy and scratch and buy and scratch over and over, right at the store.

I always recommend that scratch players take the cards home with them, and scratch them at home. That way it is nearly impossible to get caught in dangerous behavior. (Unless you live next to the store

No: This is Lottery Post Not Weight Watchers!

I don't have a weight problem, I'm in fine physical condition. I have a potential financial problem, since my $4 B J costs 4 times a $1 lottery ticket. If people spending $1 on a lottery chance need a toll-free number to fight their habit, maybe I do too. Let's not mention my wife's 'habit' of attending the movie theater at $8 a ticket. No toll-free number there either. Lord help us and our habits.

Editor's note: As you'll read below, the initial data provided by the New York Lottery to The Post-Star was incorrect, but the comparisons of geographic sales data and the results of the study were still valid, even after the correct figures were applied. Lottery Post has long opposed the theory that poor people disproportionately play the lottery, and this in-depth look at actual lottery sales data supports Lottery Post's position. Some have gone as far as labeling lotteries regressive taxat... [ More ]
