Why don't you tell us why it shouldn't have happened? You've obviously calculated the probabilities, because it would have been stupid to come here knowing the population but not having a clue about the actual chances of selling another jackpot winning ticket.

Stationed in California during the first Morro Bay lottery win. I even passed through there on my way to Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The problem with your statement is Morro Bay is isolated also the first win was a liquor store and the second in a grocery store and that win was over a decade ago so the incentive for many people to buy tickets there usually wanes because other cities have become the hot place to buy them.

Your logic is flawed and who knows if Indiana didn't have corruption going on. We talk about big states getting more wins shouldn't that count for big cities within those states? We read stories about Eddie Tipton and think that is a one in a million and that's the only corruption going on; sorry i'm not that naive. Any person with a logical mind would find a needle (Morro Bay 10,500 pop) in a haystack (California 39.6M) believable but TWICE is infinitesimal.

It's a valid question. Not sure if things are similar in Louisiana, but in California, when a store or town gets in the news for selling a jackpot winner, that place becomes a hotspot for buying lottery tickets. It's easy to find such stores because the CALottery has a list of lucky retailers available on the website. Question: How can a city (Morro Bay, CA) with a population of less than 11K win two jackpots ? Mega Millions $133M in 2010 and Powerball $700M in 2021. There are many cities with populations many times the size of this city that have not won once in that time period. If this was Los Angeles i would say ok there are 4M people a lot of tickets are being bought but given the size of the city it makes me question the validity of the lottery.

You still don't get it. Those states sell an inordinate times more tickets so naturally they have more winners. If you select the correct numbers without the use of a quick pic which most lazy players do because they have no idea how to fill out a slip or don't want to it does not matter what state you do it in. How could it possibly make a difference where you play it.

I agree with that theory as long as you play the other lotteries while waiting for this impossible to hit one to reach a level worth playing. But generally people will not play those ever. They only want 300m or more and will not spend a nickel on anything lower. So they are only going to get to play a lottery about 20 times more and I guess they are content with that.

You can see sales by state here. It agrees with your figures for TX, and puts NY at 5,180,816 and CA at 6,974,611 tickets.

VT was a hair over 71,000 for Monday and almost 97k last Saturday. That 97k is a lot higher than for most drawings, but even using that figure and the new 3 drawings per week schedule it would take more than 19 years for VT to sell the 292 million tickets that we might expect to produce one jackpot winner.

Ticket sales weren't all that impressive in Texas.

I just checked. There were 4,061,027 PB tickets sold for Monday's draw.

For Saturday's draw they sold 5,269,484 tickets. So fewer tickets were sold for Monday's draw than Saturday's.

I would be interested in knowing how that compared to California, and other states like New York, Florida..etc.

Also, during this last run, there was not a single second prize winner in Texas. That's rather sad.

If you can't play as often, just spend the same $ when you do play. That's what I do, no hassle having to get tickets all the time. If your goal is the jackpot, buying more tickets in the same draw infinitesimally improves your odds of winning compared to buying 1 ticket over multiple draws. This is because multiple drawings are independent events, whereas multiple tickets in the same draw are not (assuming self-pick).

I think that people just spend more money on tickets in California, they don't have the Power Play, so a ticket is just $2.00

I spent $99.00 on 33 quick picks, the odds were against me. The cashiers here, want to sell the $3.00 Powerball with the Power Play Multiplier. I only had two #15 worth $8.00 each. No white numbers at all.

Sometimes too many things are blamed on the Pandemic and you hit the nail on the head with this. I believe somebody won Double Play on PB in your state. Glad we don't have it, now if they changed the matrix to reflect the reduced top prize as well as the Powerball # I might entertain it.

Your odds never change, but the jackpot size does. Single digit Millions (after tax cash) isn't worth it to gamble on such awful lower tier payouts. At that level, a game like Cash4life or a state lotto offer you just as much in terms of quality of life while being easier to win the jackpot and lower tier prizes. The ONLY good time to play the top two is when the jackpot is at $100+ Million Cash after tax.

Because even 20 million is life changing enough for anyone. You are better off winning 20 million instead of 699.8 million if you stop and analyze it. How often does it get that high. So you are going to play 4 times a year to try to win money you couldn't possibly ever spend.

The CA Lottery's standard press release after a big win could include more info like whether the ticket was a quick pick, and also where the 5+0 and 4+1 prize winners were sold, if any. (On any given PB drawing, there are less than ten 4+1 and 5+0 winners in CA, most of the time fewer than 5.) Players love that kind of info and it's all recorded in the database. I got nothing better to do I might just email them.

They sell hundreds of times more tickets in those states. I am tired of people saying that only the big states win. It makes absolutely no difference where you live as an individual you have the same chance as anyone else does no matter where you buy the ticket.

I wonder how the DoublePlay states did. Michigan only got two third prize winners (50k) on a record Jackpot. I wonder if that is because some of the money played got diverted into the DoublePlay game so less tickets were bought overall. Is there an analysis somewhere of how the DoublePlay states did on second and third prizes in the main game

One Powerball lottery ticket sold in California won the seventh-largest lottery prize in U.S. history on Monday night.

The lucky numbers for the $699.8 million jackpot were 12, 22, 54, 66, and 69, with Powerball number 15. The Power Play multiplier was 2. The top prize was adjusted upwards from the initial estimate of $685 million after all proceeds were counted Monday night.

The lump sum payout for the single winning ticket is a jaw-dropping $496 million.
