California doesn't tax lottery winnings. Did you read the article. He gets 628M after federal 37% federal tax and 0% California tax.

California doesn't tax lottery jackpot winners. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow winners to remain anonymous. It's really unfortunate and hopefully it won't take a tragedy to change the rules in order to keep up with the times. In this day and age, a winner's privacy is just as important which many states fortunately now recognize.

I get that and I welcome a healthy level of skepticism but people can't just pick and choose when to be skeptical. Either the whole thing is rigged or not. Not to mention people aren't forced to play. The lottery is audited and very transparent. Winners shouldn't have to pay a heavy price to appease conspiracy theorists with childish understandings of how lotteries are conducted.

I don't think he meant for his comment to sound creepy. A lot of players are very skeptical of gigantic jackpots. They always feel as if there is something nefarious going on. Revealing the names of winners sometimes alleviates some of that skepticism. Thanks to people like Eddie Tipton, states are inclined to be much more transparent..... and to some players, revealing the names of huge jackpot winners is part of that transparency. As much as I am shocked and ecstatic to have won the Powerball drawing, the real winner is the California public school system, Castro said in his note.

An under-reported issue is that the CA Lottery does not really contribute all that much to public education here.

What do you mean we need to find out the identity of the winner?

This is extremely dangerous and downright creepy. They don't owe YOU anything. As long as the lottery is conducted fairly the winners should have the right to claim their prize anonymously without being badgered by psychopaths.
