I have no idea why people feel a need to live in ridiculously large houses, but as a general rule real estate is a good investment. I think the guy should be more discreet, but none of has the first clue why he bought those places. If one of the first things he did was spend $25 million on a 13,000 SF house specifically to live in I think it could be as big a sign of bad judgment as not doing a better job of concealing the purchase. I agree. Those of us who have been LP members for a while, have seen past reckless patterns by some winners. It has nothing to do with jealousy. Those who look to be superstars or celebrities after winning, like Cynthia Stafford, tend to lose their money fairly quickly. When that money is gone, your new important friends will disappear.

Nice to hear of a lottery winner who made all the right moves. Move out of state, remain anonymous, don't say yes to all family requests for money. No big spending and she has an great financial advisor.

He has bought three mansions so far. IMO, that's reckless spending. He's likely showing off pretending to be someone important. The money is controlling him and he will have many (fake) friends coming into his life to milk him. I think he'll be broke in less than ten years.

Other than Jack Whittaker, I can't think of a single lottery winner who took home over $100 million who went broke, regardless of their spending habits. He expects Castro, the largest single lottery winner, to go broke because he bought 3 houses a few cars

As many have said, living in poverty is a type of trauma.

One can't have significant instability insecurity in almost every area of one's life and not expect to have it influence one's relationship with money when that money becomes suddenly overwhelmingly available.

There can be overcompensation (buying up everything they come across because they couldn't before), or undercompensation (being a hoarder or becoming miserly because they're so terrified of losing what they now have).

Can't think of a single good reason for her to come forward 7 years later to tell everyone, who wasn't aware before, that she's a lottery winner. Is her name an alias? If not, then this is the craziest take on a low profile I've ever seen.

That said, she did a lot of things wrong, she did some questionable things, but she did a lot right.

Anyway ..... She seems to have her head on straight and even admitted to having a casino problem .... which she cleaned up on her own before it did her in.

I wonder how much she's worth nowadays.

As far as the Gucci stuff ... Everyone is entitled to a little treat once in a while and she's correct in stating it's a lot cheaper than a Rolls Royce.

I felt it was unfair to compare these two given the significant differences in the amounts won.

If you look at the purchases as a percentage of the winning, Gloria spent more of her winnings on the houses than Castro has.

Sometimes it's hard for people to see the math in a different light.

Castro won over $600 million after taxes and she got about $2 million. The article doesn't mention her net worth seven years later, but she is probably living off her investments.

I am happy for Gloria, that she resisted the temptation to splurge and instead used the winnings to safeguard both hers and the kids financial future.

3 million is not a ton of money but if managed well then it could lead to a comfortable life and that really is what counts.

I am happy that she also got a trust worthy financial advisor who helped to keep her grounded and focused on the bigger picture and did not take her on a wild goose chase.

I wonder how many friends she lost and how many suddenly close cousins quit calling after she told them no money?

I would stay anonymous if at all possible, but the above is one good reason to go public. You sure find out who your real friends are

Excellent story and very organized lady. Kudos to her for protecting her family and future finances. Smart for buying the $200K homes as not to draw attention. Her whole plan revolves around the fact that she's trying to preserve her money for not only for herself but for future generations as well. Are you aware of the fact that for many people who inherit great wealth, grandpa's fortune usually doesn't make it to his grandkids?
