I took Truecritic's advice and bought another computer. Thanks everybody for you help. Amazingly, when I move the old computer to a differnt location it all worked and the problem was not there. Go figure.

Turn the computer off, take off your rings and if you feel comfortable opening it up blow it out with some canned air. I go into my tower every couple of months and blow out all the fans to make sure it runs cool.Your video card is the one with the monitor cable to it and may have a tiny cooling fan on the card which may be clogged with dust, causing it to overheat. Worth a try to blow it out to see if it can get moving again if that's the problem. Next would see about reinstalling the video car... [ More ]

You might want to check for an update to your video card driver, as some are updated periodically. Also if your video card has a cooling fan on it if you can open your computer blow that fan out along with your CPU fan while you're in there.

If you need a monitor you may also be able to get a used one free. Go to yahoo groups and search for Freecycle. there you can join a group of people in your area who give away stuff instead of throwing it away. I've got a C-Band Satellite system from there and my brother was fortunate to get a laptop from that site. It had windows 95 on it but it's a laptop. ME has system restore, you could try going back to before you reinstalled your DSL / program. And then reinstall them again. If the program isn't related to the DSL, you might hold off on installing that until you see how your monitor behaves.

You have Windows ME, right? I'll give you one more thing once you confirm this. But for now, go here:Start->Control Panel->Display. Settings Tab.Make sure you are at 800 x 600 (or wherever you normally have resolution set). And at high-color 16 bit.Used monitors 15 should be about $40 if it is the monitor. You might want to have your local techs take a look.

Have this ever happened to anyone's computer.Half of the top part of the screen will go the color black and right at the base of the black (midway) is a thin bright light. It just did it now. Wow. Thanks Truecritic, I do use a HP printer and I upgraded a few months ago. It never occurred to me that HP would be the culprit. When you think about it the error message is HPosm. I did what you said and I haven't got one of those error messages again. Hopefully that fixed it.Thanks again.

That's a good point Janet, but I think that these bastards who keep invading on a regular basis, warrants such tools as spy doctor. Until the govt. or someone actively enforces laws pertaining to these low lifes, we will need help. I don't think you want to take your CPU to the Geek Squad ( that was funny...still laughing hard) every 2 weeks, when your computer slows down or shows errors. Thanks for the links guys. I get the hposm has caused an error message all the time. I don't feel good about going into my registry either. So when I have problems that I am too scared to handle, I just take my CPU to the Geek Squad. It's cheaper than buying software that doesn't work.I'm going to check out Ask Sam link and the other one. Maybe I'll get brave and try to rid my system of that annoying error message.

I don't think the freeware I've had does the job as equally to a purchased one. Once I ordered spydoctor, it saw things that ad-aware and microsoft anti-spyware didn't see. Also trend-micro didn't see either.Error doctor served a whole different purpose, and with a lengthy search on the net, couldn't find any free stuff for the errors in my system.

I know, I don't want to mess with the registry. I can always go to my online help and they will guide me through this. That has to be what's slowing my computer down. I know this because I've cleaned every malicous spyware you can think of except for eacceleration. It's not anywhere to be found, since I removed it from the control panel many months ago, yet it's still running in memory.

Pac, I had the same problem and what you need to do is go into your registration to totally remove it, and I won't give instructions for doing that, although I am comfortable doing it in my computer, because a bad move and you can totally mess things up. Reason being is that some programs add things to your registration and again the only way to completely get rid of them is to manually remove them as many anti spyware programs do not remove things from registration.

PacWhat version of Windows?Msconfig is in Windows.Start->Run. Type: msconfigClick OK.Uncheck all unnecessary programs. Msconfig only loads programs at bootup. It does not remove any programs themselves. So if you don't need it running at bootup, you can just manually open the program once you uncheck it from msconfig.

Thanx calif, I have ad-aware and a couple of others like error doctor and spy doctor. They don't even recognize it's presence. Spybot is the only one that sees it.As far as msconfig, that's in DOS and I don't have a clue to what I have to write in there.

Use msconfig to run only the necessary programs, then run Spybot or ad-aware or your anti-virus or all of them! I have found that Spybot misses some things that ad-aware does not.

Anyone out there know how to remove eacceleration? I tried Spybot search and destroy, but it says that it can't get rid of it because it's running in memory. I've tried just about every spyware cleaner out there to no avail.I even searched the net and found a tool that claims to get rid of it. I just purchased ERROR DOCTOR for 39.95. It is worth it. I had over 300 errors due to many months of downloading and removing programs.I also recommend ad-aware, trend micro spy removal, and Spy Doctor. Also try Spybot. All of that list I just wrote is free except for Spy doctor, and error doctor. Best of all I found a link which got rid of eacceleration from my memory. Spybot had no way of removing it. Slowed up my comp.Good luck.

The best way to do this is if you are going to wipe programs off your hard drive is to make a back up of all those programs on Floppy Disk first! Put the programs you want to save on floppy then you can reload the ones you want to keep back onto your computer after the clean

Sounds like you need to download a registry repair tool to diagnose what problems exist. Go to http://www.download.com/ and look up the System Utilities. I believe the Registry Mechanic tool will do a diagnostic scan.

Unclear on what you are trying to do. Do you want to add or remove programs???If so, then go to control panel work from there. It shouldn't get rid of anything you're not looking to get rid of. The icons on the desk top are for quicker access--at least, that's why I have mine there.
