honey bee >I need to clean my hard drive.
A minimum requirement to fixing computer problems via a forum is to know the names of programs. Also, what version of Windows? Service Packs? What browser do you use? What programs are giving you the problem? Explain in some detail what the problem is.
To use the word "clean" can mean many things. Could mean your cache, cookies and history? Delete? Uninstall? Reformat? Spyware? Virus? You will have to provide more details.

What version of Windows?
Msconfig is in Windows. Start->Run. Type: msconfig Click OK.
Uncheck all unnecessary programs. Msconfig only loads programs at bootup. It does not remove any programs themselves. So if you don't need it running at bootup, you can just manually open the program once you uncheck it from msconfig.

Anyone out there know how to remove eacceleration? I tried Spybot search and destroy, but it says that it can't get rid of it because it's running in memory. I've tried just about every spyware cleaner out there to no avail.
I even searched the net and found a tool that claims to get rid of it. But when I ran spybot to see if the tool really worked, I was dissapointed to see it show up again.
Thanx in advance.
Pac,
I had the same problem and what you need to do is go into your registration to totally remove it, and I won't give instructions for doing that, although I am comfortable doing it in my computer, because a bad move and you can totally mess things up. Reason being is that some programs add things to your registration and again the only way to completely get rid of them is to manually remove them as many anti spyware programs do not remove things from registration.

I know, I don't want to mess with the registry. I can always go to my online help and they will guide me through this. That has to be what's slowing my computer down. I know this because I've cleaned every malicous spyware you can think of except for eacceleration. It's not anywhere to be found, since I removed it from the control panel many months ago, yet it's still running in memory.
Thanx, I've been to that site already today, but I don't want to buy pctools and for it not to work. I've spent enough money on error doctor and spy doctor.
Also he advertises stop sign. I advise against it since that's one path eacceleration gets into your computer.

OK...the DOX link in the "Ask Leo" page provides detailed instructions including the registry edit. If you are careful, you should be able to handle the registry. If you would feel safer, backup the registry first.
Thanx, I appreciate your time and effort. I'm a little weary about going into the registry for obvious reasons. I think I will just call the compaq Customer service. The only problem with them is that everyone in customer service is indian and I have trouble understanding their heavy accent.
But I will try the link you provided. Thanx again.
I don't think the freeware I've had does the job as equally to a purchased one. Once I ordered spydoctor, it saw things that ad-aware and microsoft anti-spyware didn't see. Also trend-micro didn't see either.
Error doctor served a whole different purpose, and with a lengthy search on the net, couldn't find any free stuff for the errors in my system.

Thanks for the links guys. I get the "hposm has caused an error" message all the time. I don't feel good about going into my registry either. So when I have problems that I am too scared to handle, I just take my CPU to the Geek Squad. It's cheaper than buying software that doesn't work.
I'm going to check out "Ask Sam" link and the other one. Maybe I'll get brave and try to rid my system of that annoying error message.

That's a good point Janet, but I think that these bastards who keep invading on a regular basis, warrants such tools as spy doctor. Until the govt. or someone actively enforces laws pertaining to these low lifes, we will need help. I don't think you want to take your CPU to the Geek Squad ( that was funny...still laughing hard) every 2 weeks, when your computer slows down or shows errors.
Sometimes I think these cleaning companies are in cahoots with the hijackers. What a great money maker that is. Create a problem, and then disguise yourself as a savior to that problem, like ad-aware and the whole host of other cleaners.
People have recommended firewalls, but they cause more headache because too much security can hinder efforts on the computer, like loading anything from the net, or ordering online. I had to actually disengage Norton just so I can make purchases online. Sure I could lower the threat level a bit, but the indian customer service agent or CSR, didn't mention that. I found out about that on my own months later.
Oh...the tangled webs we weave.......I mean surf......

Something to try. If you have HP printer or computer.
Start->Run. Type: msconfig. Click OK. Uncheck anything with "hpcmpmgr" or "hp support" in the startup file. If that solution causes any problems, go back, check it again and reboot.
If you don't have HP, can you pinpoint approx when the error started?

Thanks Truecritic, I do use a HP printer and I upgraded a few months ago. It never occurred to me that HP would be the culprit. When you think about it the error message is HPosm.
I did what you said and I haven't got one of those error messages again. Hopefully that fixed it.
