Everyone should have a firewall. If I had to choose between a firewall or anti-virus, I'd pick the firewall.

Zone Alarm free for personal use is good.

Zone Alarm

Norton Anti-Virus uses a lot of resources, many people have problems.  When you get Norton's "super deluxe all-in-one" no one seems to know where or how to set everything.

AVG has a free anti-virus and most seem to like it. Check it out here:

I need to clean my hard drive. Some  of my programs

have stop working. How do I save the stuff on my

          desk top?

These people sell a program that might be able to help you, it is called Fix- it, here is the link to the site:

          http://www.v-com.com/product/Fix-It_Utilities_Home.html

It is about $50 to buy it.

Other than that use DR, Watson. Go to "Start" left bottom corner of your Pc's screen (DeskTop), click on it, then go to "Programs" then "Accessories" then "System Tools" then "System Information" Lth Click on it then Lth Click on "Tools" then Lth Click on "DR. Watson". go from there.

To backup your PC (Hard Drive) Go to "Start" left bottom corner of your Pc's screen (DeskTop), click on it, then go to "Programs" then "Accessories" then "System Tools" then "Backup" go from there.

You can also try: Go to "Start" left bottom corner of your Pc's screen (DeskTop), click on it, then go to "Programs" then "Accessories" then "System Tools" then "Maintenance Wizard" go from there.

Also go to "My Computer" the Icon on your deskTop on the upper left corner, Lth click on it then go to the "C" Drive and Rth Click on it, then Lth click on "Properties" Go to "Tools" Lth click on it and go from there, Also before that  you can try the "Disk Cleanup"  Lth Click on it. and go from there.

I have Win98SE, but all Windows versions should be almost the same more or less.

It is hard to give you any more help without being there with you and or knowing what is wrong with your computer and or Windows installation.

If I can help you some more let me now.

          Good luck.

I avoid zone alarm like the plague, if you go to remove it, you need to either edit the registry (HUNDREDS of entries) or hunt their site to find the removal tool.

                  My favorite setup is

                  1. AVG antivirus

                  2. Lavasoft ADAWARE 6

                  3. Hijack THIS!

                  and finally

                  4. Norton Personal Firewall

search bars on the browser are a pain, in "control panel"/"add/remove programs" remove the following

                  A. anything by LYCOS (most notably sidesearch)

                  B. any search assistants

                  C. anything by nCASE (will require special nCASE uninstallers)

                  D. anything with the word BUDDY in the title (they are most definitely not buddies---bonzi buddy is the most notable)

                  E. anything by GATOR (zip-zilla, search-zilla etc...)

                  F. anything with $ave or bargain in the title

there are others, but these are the basics...

Playing more than one ticket per game is betting against yourself.

ConfusedHave this ever happened to anyone's computer.

Half of the top part of the screen will go the color black and right at the base of the black (midway) is a thin bright light.  It just did it now.  Wow.  Never seen this before.  But after about one minute it will go back normal.

I am able to type in this post because the second half of the screen is ok.

What to do, what to do?

It could be your monitor.  How often has this happened?  When did it start?  Have you installed/uninstalled any software recently?

Do you have another monitor to try in place of the one you use?

It just started a few days ago when I re-installed my DSL and a another program.  I don't have another monitor but that was my first thought that my monitor was going.

                          Gee

You have Windows ME, right?  I'll give you one more thing once you confirm this.  But for now, go here:

                            Start->Control Panel->Display.  Settings Tab.

Make sure you are at 800 x 600 (or wherever you normally have resolution set).  And at high-color 16 bit.

Used monitors 15" should be about $40 if it is the monitor.  You might want to have your local techs take a look.
