ME has system restore, you could try going back to before you reinstalled your DSL / program.  And then reinstall them again.  If the program isn't related to the DSL, you might hold off on installing that until you see how your monitor behaves.

You have Windows ME, right?  I'll give you one more thing once you confirm this.  But for now, go here:

    Start->Control Panel->Display.  Settings Tab.

Make sure you are at 800 x 600 (or wherever you normally have resolution set).  And at high-color 16 bit.

Used monitors 15" should be about $40 if it is the monitor.  You might want to have your local techs take a look.

If you need a monitor you may also be able to get a used one free. Go to yahoo groups and search for Freecycle. there you can join a group of people in your area who give away stuff instead of throwing it away. I've got a C-Band Satellite system from there and my brother was fortunate to get a laptop from that site. It had windows 95 on it but it's a laptop. When I moved from KY to TN I gave away a lot of stuff I would have normally thrown away, furniture, TV's, stereo equipment, clothes, and odd and ends. In this area there are several people who repair computers and post them on the site for free.

Here is a little bit about free cycyle.

The Freecycle™ Network is made up of people, non-profits businesses across the globe who are giving and getting stuff for FREE in their own towns. The primary intent is to reduce what is put into landfills by giving away items rather than throwing them out. We all have things in our garages, closets, attics, storerooms, offices, etc., that we don't need. Freecycle™ lets you find someone who does instead of trashing it. No item is too big or too small but ALL must be 100% free. Think of Freecycle™ as a community wide garage sale, only far far cooler. So use Freecycle™ instead! It's a perfect consumer/earth friendly circle: no overhead, no money, no waste and no catch. Check out our webpage, freecycle.org, for info on other cities, etc. More info to follow soon. Have fun...

If you replace the monitor and your still having a problem, then it could be your video card.

It just started a few days ago when I re-installed my DSL and a another program.  I don't have another monitor but that was my first thought that my monitor was going.

              Nokia Monitor Test 1.0.0.1
               http://www.majorgeeks.com/Nokia_Monitor_Test_d960.html

"Nokia Test is a freeware utility by Nokia that will guide you through testing and adjusting any monitor for an optimum display. There are test patterns for Geometry, Convergence, Resolution, Moiré, Brightness, Contrast, Focus, Readability, Color and Screen Regulation. You put up the test pattern and then make the adjustments to your monitor.

There is also an excellent help file that explains all the technical terms and procedures necessary to understand how to correctly set up and adjust your monitor. You might also want to check out DisplayMate Technologies. This company writes the software that all the computer magazines use to test and compare monitors. They also write video diagnostic software for professionals. There is a wealth of information on these pages with everything from what to look for when you buy a new monitor, how to care for it, and how you should adjust it.

Nokia Test runs under all versions of Windows and can be used on any computer display. There is nothing to install. Simply extract the zip file into a directory of your choice and a Nokia Test directory will be created. You can run the program directly from the directory or make a shortcut to Ntest.exe and run it from where ever you wish.

Nokia Test may not be the newest or the most advanced display diagnostic software available but it is easy to use ... and you can't beat the price! "

You could try "Freecycle.org" in your area in the event someone might be giving one away, or Craigslist.org in your area to see if someone has one at a reasonable price.  You might also see if any local mom and pop computer store has any monitors for sale that are "off lease" to large companies.  Got mine like that ... been running 3 years with no problem.

              Good luck to everyone!

You might want to check for an update to your video card driver, as some are updated periodically.  Also if your video card has a cooling fan on it if you can open your computer blow that fan out along with your CPU fan while you're in there.

I did the Nokia monitor test.  No monitor problem.  I was hoping the monitor was the problem.  That would have been an easy fix.

DisneyI'll check the update for video card driver.  Blow out the cooling and CPU fan!!!!  I'll have to let the geek squad do that.

I know you probably think it is easy.

Turn the computer off, take off your rings and if you feel comfortable opening it up blow it out with some canned air. I go into my tower every couple of months and blow out all the fans to make sure it runs cool.

Your video card is the one with the monitor cable to it and may have a tiny cooling fan on the card which may be clogged with dust, causing it to overheat. Worth a try to blow it out to see if it can get moving again if that's the problem. Next would see about reinstalling the video card driver, or possibly updating the driver.

PS You don't need the geek squad, just a screwdriver and some canned air !!!!!!! Green laugh

Also if you do become adventuresome with opening the case, be sure to unplug your computer for your safety.  Cool

                        Good luck to everyone!

ConfusedHave this ever happened to anyone's computer.

Half of the top part of the screen will go the color black and right at the base of the black (midway) is a thin bright light.  It just did it now.  Wow.  Never seen this before.  But after about one minute it will go back normal.

I am able to type in this post because the second half of the screen is ok.

What to do, what to do?

PatriotI took Truecritic's advice and bought another computer.  Thanks everybody for you help.  Amazingly, when I move the old computer to a differnt location it all worked and the problem was not there.  Go figure.

Maybe a loose connection if moving it actually solved it. Which means a jiggle here and there might make it start up again.

Good luck with the new one.
