There are odds for everything that can happen in the game, hence we have filters, etc. The purchase of two tickets cuts the odds in half. It doesn't split the field in half, it just means each ticket faces off against half, but the halves aren't specific.

In the same sense. When I play the NSW lottery at only .50 cents per ticket my odds per dollar are cut in half. BobP

That is correct. What they do is irrelevant. YOUR overall odds of winning are 1:87+ million since you hold 2 tickets. Not the WHOLE overall odds. The whole overall odds for the next person coming in would be (if all combinations were sold before dups) would be whatever total odds minus your 2 tickets:1.

One more attempt at this 175,000,000 and the second ticket. Let's use CalifDude's store example, but this is a real unique store, it's where the lotto is drawn.

All the combinations, all 175,000,000 (round number for discussion) are laid out in lines of 5 numbers + 1 number, as many lines as it takes for 175,000,000 combinations to show.

Yes, exactly Califdude. This is about the odds against any one person when they buy one combination or two combinations, etc. It has nothing to do with whether other people may have the same combination. Other people are irrelevant in this scenario. All the math tricks in the world don't change that, because you are only facing the odds against you when you buy a ticket(s).

And the people who won the Powerball gave a damn about the odds? I don't even think they knew what the odds were. Odds are useless. Actually lottery math is very simple- you just add and substract one digit at the time. You don't even have to do the mirror if you do the proper rundown, it will mirror itself on the 5th down and the actual number will return back to itself.

I don't think anyone considered duplicates or what other people do regarding playing in the same pool.

So, another play on that drum of CDs. He goes and picks out a ticket and stands by the wall. The other guy is his partner and asks what his odds are, CD says 175,711,535 to 1.

So that guy goes and picks his ticket. He comes back and CD asks what his odds are. He says: 87,855,768 to 1 because I got the 2nd ticket!

I think they are saying that 2 people can pick the same set of numbers.......duplicate tickets duplicate numbers.

For instance I go to the store and get a ticket with 1 2 3 4 5 6 and then you come behind me and pick the same numbers on your ticket and then 1 2 3 4 5 6 comes up that night....we both win because we have duplicate ticket numbers hence we both win with the same odds of winning. Correct me if I am wrong

What you FAIL to grasp is the fact that the odds against YOU are NOT affected by what others do. You are NOT pulling UNIQUE rabbits out of a hat.

In the real world of MM; ANYONE (and you) can (and sometimes do) choose identical (a.k.a. DUPLICATE) selections...

Hence, MULTIPLE winners EACH facing identical odds.

Now, wash your hands...and try to GRASP that.
