Pretty much everything can be a gray area when it comes to laws. That's why politicians (the majority) are lawyers. They write laws so there is a back door .

But if WA starts arresting little old ladies that are playing 25-cent bets online, just wait until the media gets a hold of that kind of silliness. It's a grey area on Federal law to use the internet. It is certainly not a felony. It only takes them wanting to make an example to have the impact felt. It also shows the real priorities of law makers to place it at the level of child porn. One only harms children and the other goes against their donors.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. They don't have enough space in the prisons now for the violent criminals. I have a lot of friends in law enforcement, and these are the kind of laws that they chuckle at...

Besides, Littleoldlady, it's already against Federal law to use a telephone line to place a gambling bet. That law has been around for many years.

I don't know about it being a FELONY, that's a little extreme, but it should be illegal only because it's too easy to rig the online gaming systems to make SURE you CAN ONLY LOSE over time. Well, I do live in Washington, and I'm a bit ticked off about this new law. I've never done any online betting, but had considered it. Since my budget for such activities would be small, any betting I would have done probably wouldn't have amounted to a hill of beans anyway, but I feel a bit like a kid who hears no and then wants to do the forbidden activity even more. I probably won't do it now, though, as it just isn't worth the risk.

In this day and age, I wouldn't bet on anyone being too busy, after all, they make money from charging people with crimes and of course, they MUST make their examples.....I am glad I don't live in that state....I hope other states don't follow but if they do, I'll just have to quit..do they say how they are going to catch folks? I mean there are people who bet on sports games a lot more than play the lottery..

Exactly. Do they really think that the state law enforcement officials have time to chase down people playing lotto online? Hardly. They are too busy trying to catch real criminals and violent offenders. They don't really have time or resources to assign many of their law enforcement people to stop their real work and work on something like this.....it's all political feel good legislation.

Making it a law is one thing, trying to enforce it is another. They may act tough for a little while but it will be business as usual after that. This way they get to keep the tribe happy, take their money and nothing has really changed.

It will be like them going after Napster to shut the music industry up and busting a few kids to make it look good while everybody else is getting their music from the other million sites online. You never hear about the stuff anymore either.

I think Americans have a little more freedon than do people in some other countries, but I think we are losing more and more as time goes by. Especially after the 911 tragedy. Thanks to the third world style corruption in WA state it is now a class C felony to gamble on the internet. THis includes sports, poker, lottery and all other gambling. It is NOT limited to those who run gambling sites but anyone ordering from betslips or any customer of gambling sites as well. We have a big problem in this state with Tribal casino's bribing state legislature members and it looks like all those bribes paid off. I'm sick of living in a third world style corrupt state.
