This probably goes for Florida, too. Granted the bulk of the population in Illinois is in Cook County and the collar counites (those surrounding Cook County, where Chicago is) but it seems like nobody 'downstate' wins.

Of course, there's a joke in Chicago that anything south of 183rd street is 'downstate'.

(There's also a saying in Illinois that the dog barks in Chicago and wags its tail in Springfield, i.e., nothing south of Springfield exists).

Buying the winning numbers is the only luck that I need.

I live very close to 2 7-Elevens sold big winning tickets, $100 mil, but no big winning since. A banner Big winner was made here. or something like that placed in front of the store. I think it just attract more buyers.

No, I'm always curious as to how folks arrive at numbers, if they see something I don't, if they see something I could use in conjunction with my own theories, that's all. Besides, I am convinced all the best calculations in the world will only get you 3x5, the other 2 always come out of nowhere, hit by pure luck. People here, for the most part, probably play them all, but given the chances of hitting any of them being in the 150,000,000 to 1 range for Powerball and 176,000,000 to 1 range for Mega Millions and 575,000 something to 1 for a 5/39 game that also rolls over......let's see....

We have lots of customers who play only the Powerball and not take a stab at the lotto 5.

Lotto 5 has a smaller matrix and rolls over really fast. It is up to a half million for tonight. I dont understand why people go for the millions when the odds are so much greater...

I buy both for my father.. and lotto 5 for myself..

Sorry - I thought we were talking about Powerball, not 'Little Lotto' or whatever you said. We don't have 'Little Lotto' here, and most folks know all I ever play is Powerball. I pay absolutely no attention to any other game(s) besides Powerball because they are irrelevent to me.

I'm not sure what you are saying. Are the games where you live local? Our games cover the entire State of Florida and one town has just as much of a shot at the jackpot as any other, but since so many people buy tickets in Miami, it has the majority of winners. Anyway, it's at least 125 miles each way, so I'd be spending about $25-$30 in gas and tolls to get $5 of lottery tickets. Then I'd find out that the person in line behind me won a jackpot with a quick pick! LOL

In California it seems like most of the winning tickets come from the Los Angeles area. I suppose that makes sense because the population is huge, more tickets being bought = more chances of winning. Though, here in the capitol we've had 2 major SuperLotto winners from the same liquor store! That started a media frenzy and everyone started going there to buy tickets thinking it was a lucky store. They haven't had a win since.

In theory you may be right, in reality you are wrong, I discussed this a week ago.

A year or two ago, there were 2 winners from Wyoming (or Idaho ?), and no winners in Pennsylvania.

In theory Pennsylvania should have more winners because the population of PA is like 13 million - Philly alone is like 5 million - but the population of Wyoming (?) is like 1.8 million, so it should stand to reason more tickets are sold in PA than WY - by a large margin.

In my adult life I have lived in three areas of Oregon and each area had winners for all lottery games. The big games like megabucks in the years that I have played have always been spread out over the state and the three winners we had for Powerball were also spread out. But I also knew of two stores that had luck with winners. You are right about White Hen. My local one has sold several Little Lotto jackpot-winning tickets in the past. The only reason I don't buy my tickets there is that the franchise shares the store's cut. If I wanted them to make money off of their franchisees, I'd buy stock.

I understand about the demographics, but Rick G beat me to mentioning the miracle mile - it's along US 41 in Wisconsin and well, blasts any 'logic' about demographics right out the window. Naturally word about a winner gets out and people flock to those places, but the amount of jackpots won in 'miracle mile' stores is way out of proportion.

What you say is absolutely true. In IL we have a lot of cities, but obviously Chicago is the biggest by a wide margin. Most winners come from the greater metropolitan area which accounts for almost one-third of the states total population.

Coin Toss - I was typing, so I didn't see your post. That's what people tell me to do here - drive 100 miles to Miami and buy an advanced play. I've noticed that some of the winners in Miami live in other counties.** BTW that $337K Fant5 jackpot in Miami is still unclaimed. One more week to go....

I think you need to look at demographics. For example, in Florida a very large portion of the winning tickets are in Miami-Dade county. However, there are also millions of people living there. Additionally, you might want to consider the areas where people work, since many players purchase tickets during their lunch hour or after finishing work.
