Wish I had been more succinct because I don't like lending money either! However, I think if a person needs help and the request is sincere, he/she certainly should feel that a friend or family member might be there to chip in when times are rough.

I totally agree with u jim but everyone is on a different page with their lives friendships. It all depends on their past trust like u said. Their r alot of people who cannot risk a large loan but want to stay on a good side with them. This promisary note comes in handy for most people when their lives depend on it.

I agree with floridian 100%. If you can't afford to gamble you shouldn't gamble. There are no excuses or justifications in the world that can change that axiom. If you borrow from a professional for gambling purposes you will get your legs broken if you don't pay it back. If you borrow from friends or family and don't pay them back, they won't break your legs, but they'll never talk to you or trust you again.

Weather a loan is to a friend or a member of your family, any agreement should be in writing. forms of promissory notes( also known as IOUs), which are often available in stationary stores, can be used for this purpose. Bill (bnorcutt) has a valid point, although I don't totally agree with him. I am not sure if the money given to these members was strictly a loan to help a friend or an agreement. From what I can tell, these moochers ripped the others off by using their money and not paying it back after winning. To me, that's a type of stealing. In any case, it's unethical. People who ask to borrow money to gamble are not asking for a loan but rather a stake. The best you can hope for is that they win enough to pay you back, if they lose you lose too and that's what usually happens. If they were interested in getting a loan (money that had to be repaid), they would go to one of those places that make short term loans.

To borrow money in order to gamble is a sure sign of a gambling problem. To use a relative's Social Security money to gamble is also a sure sign of a gambling problem. People living on Social Security are living below the poverty level and to borrow money from them to gamble and lose is not cool.

I already posted on this, but since I just saw it again on the home page, I was reminded of the last time I went to Vegas with my ex back in the summer of '81. We'd always take a set amount to gamble as part of the vacation expense. When he lost his share, he always wanted to spend more. I usually said okay. This trip I gave in again and took some money from my purse so he could continue to play poker. He lost that too. In October I filed for divorce.

Its obvious that the question poll needed clarified with , and the known associate will undoubtedly not pay you back, .

Before I retired if money was being collected for a lottery pool at work that I was contributing to and a co-worker asked me for short loan to cover his share, I had no problem if I knew he would do the same for me, but we're only talking about a couple of dollars for a day or two at most. I know from experience if anyone ask for more than a $5 loan they should be dealing a bank or one of those short term loan places in town and I tell them so.

I've loaned money to people before for all sorts of reasons as i had the money to loan. but after having been shafted so many times i haven't loaned much money to anyone anymore. Except maybe family members. I i rarely lent money to someone to gamble with unless that person didn't make enough money as for me to be concerned that he wouldn't be able to pay me back. In other words if the person borrowing money from me didn't have a job that paid well he wouldn't get a loan from me.

I used to work at a dollar store and 2 women were outside sobbing...I mean really sobbing, that they had no way to get back to port huron because there was a leak in there pipeline so wheres everytime they tried to fill up the tank there was a slow leak.

Sorry to say, (well, no, I'm NOT sorry to say), unless you have something in writing, you just GAVE someone a lot of money, you did not LOAN it to them. Tenaj-You should have confronted this person when it became a problem with depending on your handout every month. They are obviously not your friends. You got used by someone who you associates with you. I got taken for what I consider a large amount of money in 2004 by someone who I am related too. Funny that you brought up this subject, because I was just telling someone about a former friend who once said to me when I was on my way to the store to get lottery tickets pick me up 5 okay? I , too, have helped co-workers from pay check to pay check.

One need money to keep her house. Her hubby had been out of work sick for some time.

I took my winnings and gave it to her. There was no hurry for it back since it was money won..

Took her over a year but it finally came back.

And it sounds like from the money they were spending and not winning it was an addiction.

Would you loan money to someone to gamble with if they had a good sob story. I loaned money to someone with a good sob story and when I quit loaning them money they quit talking to me.
