Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery so the huge jackpot winners get National attention but individual states have to determine how the anonymity issue affects their games. They advertise the jackpot amounts so more people will play and when players read or hear that the winner bought 3 QPs using their change after a purchase at a mini-mart, it gives them reason to continue playing. A story about a Grandma winning by playing the birthdates of her 6 grandkids is even better.

I think you misunderstood what he was saying. It sounds like he's suggesting allowing anonymity but having a judge verify that there really is a real person who won. Of course if the lottery could fake a winner in the first place, how hard would it be to find a judge to join the rest of the people in the conspiracy?

You need legal standing for a judge to seal public records and some state lotteries codes prevent that from happening.

The real issue is state lottery commissions don't want players wondering if there really was a winner and if the jackpot didn't go into their pockets. By having press conferences and giving jackpot winners a huge check, they show the players that a real person won.

This thread is not a discussion about the desire to remain anonymous, but rather if a player has the right to do it when he buys a ticket. If the rules are printed on the ticket and they clearly state you do not have that right, then the person should not buy a ticket. It is the same as wanting a lump sum when you win a game that only has a 20 or 30 year payout. Don't buy a ticket if you don't agree with what will happen if you win.

I agree to a point, but it is not the same thing. Most members probably would prefer to remain anonymous, but will accept the rules of their state lottery should they win a jackpot. That wasn't really the subject matter here.

New Hampshire's current rules make a winner's name and town of residence public information.

The motto sounds good, but unfortunately it's only a slogan and not a state (or federal) policy, whether we're talking about the lottery or life in general. Maybe that's why the old man of the mountain comitted suicide a few years ago. He just got tired of watching our freedoms being taken away a little bit at a time.

When it's my money it's my choice who not to give it to, nobody can force me. Delaware offers corporations, too.

This is one of the things you learn living in Nevada - if a person takes out a safety deposit box at a bank, Uncle Sam can go into that box if they want to, for settling an estate or whatever.

If the same person forms a Navada corporation (or any) and takes out the box in the name of the coporation, only an 'officer' from the corporation (i.e., that person) can get into tha box.

True, but there are some loopholes that will allow for some anomymity.

Many states do allow winners to claim their prizes using a trust or a corporation. Although this isn't completely anonymous, it does provide for some anomymity in that it will take more effort to find the winner's name than just looking in the newspaper.

I wonder if using a corporation from somewhere like Nevada or New Mexico, which do not require the officers in a corporation be part of public record, to claim a lotte... [ More ]

1. I've got a great sense of humor. I find megawinner's idea of getting a bunch of past lottery winners together to wage a battle for anonymity almost hysterical.

2. Roe v Wade has nothing to do with the lottery but everything to do with being party to (arguably) the most famous case in the history of SCOTUS, while remaining mostly anonymous.

3. The real identity of Roe is well known now because she chose to give up her anonymity many years after the case was decided.

I would love to do that but it is not feasible for me to do so right now. I would have to drive almost 2 hours to play in Maryland just to have that option. I mean, don't get me wrong, If I were already headed in that direction then it would be a no brainer, i'd play my tickets in Maryland. But as it is right now, I just can't see spending $30 bucks on gas and about $24 bucks on tolls (both ways) just to play $5-10 bucks worth of MM tickets.

One way to stay anonymous is to join a lottery pool. Everyone that's interested in such things have heard of an office or a factory lottery pool winning a jackpot, but I doubt if anyone ever remembers who was in it. Besides being in a lottery pool increases your odds of winning something and if a jackpot is won it dilutes the notoriety as well as the winnings for everyone.

There's a post here on the board about someone in Oklahoma who won a few months ago (Powerball?) and remained anonymous.

A very generic press release was put out about how the winner declined to hold a press conference but encouraged everyone to play because they too might win.

Rundown99 made the point about if you want to be anonymous, play in a state that allows it.

If you are too scared to have your name out there, then PLEASE don't play the lottery.

It just kills me to see people doing something - knowing the rules beforehand - yet they STILL do those things, then WHINE because they don't like the rules that were set BEFOREHAND.

The lottery provides the games for us to choose to play, or not.

The players could, if enough of them acted together, get a game changed by not playing it (and file that under 'once upon a time'....)

Most states do NOT allow anonymity, because lotteries generally want the public to be assured that the grand prize is being paid to a real person. Only a few states allow anonymity. If you want to remain anonymous, I suggest that you go to a state where you can claim prizes anonymously.

Winners will be represented by consultants who attend the press conference for them, screen their mail and phone calls, (Even after they have changed their phone number and gotten disposable phones), etc...

I hope you have a lot of time on your hands. In order to get the lottery to change it's rules regarding anonymity. You will most likely have to start a petition. Unless you are an attorney or outspoken member in your community, you might have to hire an attorney to draw up any papers regarding your plea. You will most likely have to petition the courts.

Rules currently allow the prize to be collected by a representative, so I guess I really don't get what your trying to accomplish here. Sounds redundant to what already exists.
