I think most people realize it isn't quite that easy to get assistance even if you obviously qualify, but I also think most people agree that the system is broken and there's plenty of abuse. Like many things, it's a good idea that hasn't worked out as well as was hoped for.

Of course the lottery and public assistance are separate operations, but that's not the point. I don't care where somebody gets money from, whether it's the lottery, an inheritance from a rich uncle they never even knew... [ More ]

Why does it matter whether it's easy to get the assistance, or why you're getting the assistance? It's assistance that comes from people who pay taxes because they have to.

When I wrote that, it was because everyone is posting as if you can just pick up the phone and get a check from the government because you are broke or sick. That's all. I actually wrote a long comment and deleted it because the topic is too general.

Why does it matter whether it's easy to get the assistance, or why you're getting the assistance? It's assistance that comes from people who pay taxes because they have to.

You're a fine, upstanding and productive member of the community. You pay your taxes, and in your spare time you're a scout leader and a volunteer EMT. On Christmas Eve you respond to a call about a nun who was pushed down the stairs by one of the homeless people she was helping at the soup kitchen. FWIW, his lot in life... [ More ]

I wasn't going to get into this thread buy i guess i am involved so now I'll say what i think needs to be said. This post isn't about the lottery and should be in a blog. These posts are about personal feelings towards the general populace and the states allowing people to seek refuge in the system and some getting away with it. Some needing it, and some getting off of it and back into the workplace. And whether or not they should pay back the system.

No. Again, like the other poll it's too general.

First of all, getting on disability isn't that easy. Most people have serious medical conditions. Unfortunately, as I said on the other thread, there are a lot of cheaters who get lost in the system.

Regarding payback, there is a difference between a gift and a loan. So if you determine that the money received is not a loan, then it never needs to be paid back.

Nobody has the right to put anybody down for their economic status. Nor should said persons be concerned whether a person pays back taxes on something they got through government systems.

I will agree that some people abuse the system and many times they get caught but i think some people aren't aware that you just cant get gov assistance without due cause. So what if they use certain loopholes to get on assistance. Even upstanding citizens and many buisnesses use loopholes to their advantag... [ More ]

What I can say however is that honesty and generosity are not instinctive in man. Not part of human nature. These are traits one has to be taught and learned at a very young age, and by example. We follow in the footsteps of our parents.

I'm still waiting on an explanation of this taxpayer payback thing. I've heard of it, but never seen one.

If Bob Slob collected $50,000 while on the dole and he wins $5 mil, roughly half that is taken in income taxes. Now, the local yokel gov't says, Bob, you owe us a repay of $50,000.

If Bob writes a check, where does the money go

They are taking your money... If you are paying taxes.. They are taking it...

We are talking about winning Millions here... And one knows that the government will not spend Millions per year per person to keep them up.. So it is not like taking from the poor... They aren't poor any more if they win millions..

Some just have a beef to pick at me. It is issues they carry.. Sad ones at that.. I am not making any rules.. I only started a conversation.

Why should it matter how bad off they were? It's about how well of they are if they win. If you took my money when you were down and you've now got enough to pay it back then you should pay it back. If you buy lottery tickets with my money, I'm sure as hell entitled to be paid back if one of those tickets wins enough money to do so.

I agree with the hell no side of this question.

Repayment, as noted in state and even federal code, is based on fraud or some sort of processing error. So, if you are to payback something based on 'advancement of assets' (in English-your not broke anymore), then an awful lot of people would be required to ante up.

I don't agree, the people paid their taxes into the system at one point in life, so they are receiving a benefit from a system they once supported. I don't think these people should pay it back; however, if the person never paid any taxes into the system then I feel paying it back would be justified.

During my first few years as a teacher, I remember a family who told their 12 year old that they would draw a check if they didn't learn to read. If they so happen to learn, not to tell anyone. The little girl had no common sense to know that the conversation should not be told to the teacher.

Just as a sidenote FYI, America actually started out socialist and when that flopped they started all over.

The original colonists found out the hard way that when someone was suppossed to be contibuting one crop in exchange for something else, and found out they could get it whether they delivered or not, the idea was scrapped.

Yes, absolutely. After all, they can afford to pay back. Pay back so others may have.

I have no doubt that those who truly need assistance and are receiving assistance, will not have any hesitation paying back once they are able to.

The wording wasn't worded in the way I intended. I am talking about those people who refuse to work period.

My mother received assistance for us when we were little. She refused to allow my grandmother go to a nursing home to died.. Mother sat with her in our home day and night. (Mother would not allow anyone to take care of her own children, so she had to have her mother at our home so she could have the children and her mother in view.)

I'm going to say no. My mom got some assistance for help about 15 years ago and was on it for two years. She never bought Mcdonalds, lottery tickets or crap like that, when she was on it. She used it to help the family when we had a tough time. She bought school clothes, food and used it to pay bills. Not everyone who gets a helping hand is a bad seed. There are people who really need the assistance... NO DOUBT there...

However, there are lot who just refuses to find a job..

I had a student in a wheel chair.. With MD.. she finished high school.. Got her own apartment... She receives around the clock assistance since she is unable to feed herself... put herself to bed..

She works daily as a greeter at Walmart.. She receives a pay check for that...

One other thing; in some states (don't know if it is every), people on disability get X amount of dollars. If they try to be ambitious and supplement their income by getting a part time job paying Z dollars, their disability check is reduced to X - Z dollars.

Who do you suppose made that rule? Maybe -->? Certainly not the people on the dole.

Let's see: Work part time: make X dollars or Sit on my couch: make X dollars. Not a contest for most people.

I voted no. It is true that some people on assistance could work and some use their assistance money very unwisely. But I disagree with punishing all for the sins of what I believe is the minority.

My sister is on assistance and is so disabled that she is unable to even sit up in a wheelchair more than a few hours at a time. i don't know how welfare works in every state but i thought they changed the rules ... Welfare Reform. You can get welfare assistance but sooner or later you have to seek employment and stay employed or lose your welfare.

I think it should be weighed on a case by case basis. There are people who work as hard as they can and still need welfare, in their case it might not be fair to make them pay everything back. But that isn't the case with everyone, and perhaps they should give us our money back.

The question implies that the taxpayers would see a cent of this returned money. It should never have been taken to begin with. An involuntary fee, tax, or whatever-new-name-it's-given is not assistance, it's theft. This is a very Interesting topic TnTea because it involves me Personally..November 7th, 1992 Me and my son were hunting and he accidently shot me with a shotgun in my right thigh at close range..since 1992 I have had 11 operations on my right leg to save and repair it..I have been on disability since May of 1993..I have only recently been playing the lottery and it is mainly because of online play and it is very simple..if I dont have any extra..I dont play no matter if I know something is comin... If they had to pay it back after a huge win, then the money will be there to support their ass . If they spend it .......Then we are back to supporting them anyway.. Not allow them to put money on reserve..?

On the simple basis that it was never a pre-condition to recieve aid in the first place.

Also, why pick on these individuals when giant corporations and other governments get Aid from the U.S. Taxpayers - - some never pay US back, not to mention all the other aid and subcities out there. Why not talk about that

Just a conversation I had with hubby and some friends..

We know several people who get public assistance... Food stamps, Welfare Checks.. etc...

(You meet all types, when you note vehicles for a living.. )

However, suppose one hits the big one... yes they do gamble with our tax money we give them to feed their children...

Should they be required to pay back all the assistance they have received...
