Sorry to spoil it but i was going to talk about something else...I couldn't help to notice that some people will be getting 2,600 a year....And i thought that's a college scholarship right there; two semesters summer as vacation...

And college is only 4 or 5 years...Sometimes 2 years....

Why don't they do this with college scholarships...

Gas for life? Is call a bus...

Cash, I will use it for gas as needed. I have a small very fuel efficient car, and also walk and ride a bike a lot. So gas would be a waste as I would not be getting any use out of it unless I am driving. I could do a lot of other things as well with the cash, not just spend it all on gas.

I mean, how can anyone say that people who play the lottery are bad in math after coming to this site? I've never met so many people who are good with manipulating numbers and using numerical software until I found LP. I still believe most jackpots are won because people are lucky, but that doesn't stop me from trying

I wonder if the newspaper article is wrong. Why would a lump sum be equal to the prize value? The winner got $52,000 - a check for $39,000 which they said was after 25% federal tax. Usually, when there is a game that pays for life or 20 years, the lump sum is the value x 65%. Some people win cash for life games like $100,000 a year and opt for the lump sum and it's never $2 million. It's closer to $1.3M. I would probably take the cash also. Who knows if we will even be using gas 10 years down the road. We may be using another source of fuel soon. Plus, I would rather just have the money. Then I can use it for what I want.

Thanks, Raven. That's what I was saying. Anyway, who really knows what she'll be doing in 20 years from now? May I'll win the lottery and move to North Captiva where there are no gas powered vehicles!

Time*treat, in my second paragraph I explained that the for a year winner gets gas cards equal to $2,600 for a year (no cash option) I believe the Gas For Life prize is the same with a cash option. I don't think there is a maximum or minimum amount of gallons or the price of the gas matters.... [ More ]

I bought one of those $5 Summer Cash/Gas tickets and won $25 instant cash. Every 27th ticket was a $25 instant winner. The ticket didn't win any of the prizes for the first week's drawings but it was nice to hear the lottery terminal play a song indicating it was an instant winner of $25.

If the game is the same as my state's, the fine print says the amount of gas (now and in the future) is based on current average prices and a yearly maximum number of gallons. Under that formula, there is a fixed cash value so there is no advantage to holding off until gas prices move.

The gas angle is just for people more inclined to operate on emotion and not read the little writing. If food prices had doubled, they'd have called it Groceries for Life .

I agree. So would you take the gas instead? I think the 70 year old winner had a good point. After all, my Dad was retired and only had about 40,000 miles on his 1998 Grand Marquis when he died last year.

For people who commute long distances to work, I agree that $2,600 a year definitely won't cover gas costs for a lot of people. I know lots of people who now spend more than that on gas. Still, I'd take the cash, not the gas cards. With $39,000 (net) you could go out and buy a new, more fue... [ More ]

I originally started to post this in the scratch-off forum, but I then realized this isn't a scratch-off game at all! It's more like a weekly raffle. The cost for each ticket is $5. There will be 8 weekly drawings with one weekly $250,000 grand prize, five Gas For Life ($52,000 cash) second prizes and fifty Gas For a Year (26 $100 prepaid gas cards) as the 3rd prize.
