I only play pb so the lowest I would get is about 4 mill after taxes.

Before: I wouldn't claim immediately, I'll wait till after my college semester is over, move, then hire lawyers to make trusts and whatnot,

After: Just go wild, travel the world, then come back to u.s months later maybe cali., im never comin back to mn ever again, couple businesses, invest, donate, while im traveling the u.s. maybe go to las vegas, buy lots of electronics, who knows i might even spend all of it, but wha... [ More ]

I only play MM and if it is a 60 million+ JP. First check the ticket about 100 times to make sure I won. Then I would run around the house like a crazy person. Scan my ticket in my scanner take a few pics with it of me holding it and it next to my face. Then contact a lawyer so I could set up a blind trust because I dont want to go public with it, too many problems that way. Get in contact with some financial planners to wisely invest my money. so when you say in the bank do you mean you wouldn't take out CDs at several different banks? That's what I had considered doing. Never thought of investing in an insurance company, makes me nervous though.

Personally I would buy a lot of US savings bonds. I know, I know, low return yield but safe. I read that you would have to worry about finding food to eat before worrying about uncle sam not cashing your US savings bonds. I think you can only buy up to a few grand or so of each series... [ More ]

I pretty much just use this site to play Sudoku but noticed this topic under Latest Posts . I don't play Powerball unless the jackpot gets over $200 million and have probably only bought 3 tickets in my entire life. However, I do love the topic of what would you do with an enormous sum of money that you didn't have to work for . I think it says a lot about who a person is and not necessarily good versus bad.

I've thought about this MANY,MANY,MANY times.

I always play when the money is a bit high (so I can help everyone) although I would not tell people I won that amount.

1:house, car, furnishings, savings, shopping spree bank.

2: mom dad house and vacation.

3:College.

4:Family.

5:Charities.

I have tiered plans as well.

i don't even play unless the 5 (little lotto) is over 300K. Any win less would just complicate things more ha ha - don't want to 'waste my luck'

'small win' - get out of debt. My dream to not have to juggle and worry and just pay the ordinary bills each month.

I would hire a honest reputable lawyer to claim my winnings anonymously.

I would NOT tell my family and friends - that would open-up a can of worms.

I would allocate 10% to charities, but canvassing would disqualify.

I would NOT pay off my mortgage - there are other advantages to having a mortgage

I would live just as I do now, but I would the funds to establish my long-term financial security by investing in property.

It really depends on the amount of jackpot. Right now the JP amount for CA SLP is 44mil. The actual amount after all the taxes will be a bit more than 19mil. I am buying 2~3 multi-tenant commercial properties (ie:strip malls) and the total value of them will be about 17~18 million dollars. They will be the ones that provide me stream of money. Well, yeah but that's why it'd be short term, I wouldn't leave it in there permanently that way. True taxes would be a lot higher than going the other route and just having the capital gains tax but I'd rather claim it and then give myself some time to do a lot of research, CDARS would be a quick, short term option. Securities firms, even A+ ones go broke too or run into SEC problems.

DC81, I wouldn't suggest putting all of your money in the bank. You can feel very safe investing with an A+ rated securities firm or insurance company. I've already written that with only 10 banks closing in the past 2 years compared to 534 in 1989, I don't anticipate a problem with FDIC. However, if banks like Wells Fargo, Citi or Bank of America fail, there won't be enough FDIC insurance to cover everyone. So I'm not panicking... yet. But we're not quite out of the woods. It depends on how much I win. I currently play Easy 5 in Louisiana, which is up to $310,000 right now. What I would do if won was pay off the house (approx $65000) and my car (approx $2000) and then do some repairs the house needs, and build a fence for the back yard, and save/invest the rest. If anyone asks for money, the answer is NO

I've definitely planned what I will do when I win. So you're not alone.

My plans depend on the amount won however, so I have a few plans. LOL. These plans don't include hardcore investments or charities because that goes without saying for plans, at least for plans #2 and #3.

Plan #1. Win second tier (200k PB or 275k MM):

1. Pay off second mortgage.

2. Pay off debt.

3. Buy a cheap piece of property (for investment income).

It depends, not all the games I play have multi-million dollars jackpots. I play Ohio Rolling Cash5, jackpot = $100K to $350K, Ohio Classic Lotto, jackpot cash = $800K to $6M and MegaMillions. One thing for sure, I would probably spend it all.

See, I have it all planned out, was curious if others do as well.

#1, pay off my house. But there is a trick to that. See, I would pay off my house, leave it furnished and donate it to an abused women's/childrens center. This way these women could get back on their feet. In order for them to feel useful, I would charge them $100/month rent each and re-donate that back to a shelter.

#2, buy a new house, about 3500 square feet on 2-3 acres.
