It's sound like you are taking the higher road Diana. If you want a relationship with her that doesn't involve her winnings, just keep changing the subject when she starts bringing up gifts and maybe she will take the hint. Or if she doesn't take the hint, maybe say something like: Hey it's nice that you are buying all these gifts for everyone, but I was calling to talk about other things. or something like that. Clearly your sister has flaked out on you. This usually happens with friends and we just write them off, but how do you write off family? And now if you do cut or shut her off ,how do you do it without appearing upset about the loan? One solution is continue to interact with her, just avoid conversations about finances, or anything that has to do with money, expenses, etc.

Tonight was hard ... I called her to just say hello, on my OWN .. not because I HAD to.

She tells me about buying my sister who lives out of state .. a bunch of 'chocolate' stuff, candy, a stuffed bear with chocolate, brownies, fudge, etc. etc. and sending it to her in a package.

That was very nice of her .. yes, but I'm not sure why she told me that, right after making such a fuss about 'conditions' for the loan. It's just weird ... sister out of state is no closer to her than I am, and... [ More ]

Hiya,

Car sister had a car, but it was old and breaking down allot. Her financial situation is about the same as mine.

Don't know much about gift taxes, but she bought her daughter a car worth 30,000 and my sister's was about 22,000, so not sure how it worked, I never asked.

I was never sitting around waiting for money ... I nicely asked her for a loan, keeping it as business=like as I could. I always intended to pay every penny back.

I did bow out gracefully.

Well, I may have whined a bit ... but truth is, my heart was really hurt. Car sister has been 'kissing up' to her for awhile now, knowing the money was coming in. I just would NOT do that, so perhaps that's why I didn't get the loan. No, you're wrong about me ... before this winnings, all sisters talked about how we'd share. None of us are together with out husband's .. meaning, all 3 sisters are divorced and I'm separated. So there were no spouses to have confer with.

Trust me, she's controlling! I have a sister out of state, who feels the way I do .. only because she doesn't live here, she doesn't feel as strong as me. But she also .. can't be around her much or talk to her on phone very often.

And you're absolutely right about a 'relationship'! I love her, but I don't actually 'like' her that much. If that makes sense.

Sorry about your H's family ... I can understand.

Speaking of controling ... her late husband, was the same way .. and they were this way together. Whenever they wanted to give the family something, take us to dinner, breakfast, etc. ... it was a big PRODUCTION on their terms .. and I really did NOT like it and skipped many of those occasions.

I did withdraw the request for the loan, and I'm glad. This way I can see her when I want, and not feel that she's thinking I'm seeing her just for... [ More ]

Relationship with winner isn't the greatest .. but mostly that's because she's always been overly dramatic, hurtful, and well .. controlling.

And I DO appreciate the 1,000 .. I was able to pay a few small bills, buy a few things for myself and treat my cats with a new window seat.

The amount I mentioned was AFTER taxes by the way.

About the loan, I've taken it off the table ... don't want it .. don't want conditions to our relationship.

You do realize she has to pay 45% gift taxes on the $$$ and gifts she gives away if it's over 13k per person, right? That's the reason I wouldn't give much away.

Facts are you are whining but you're not the first family member, friend, neighbor or co-worker who got upset at a lottery winner who won big and didn't share. You're one of those persons who see lottery winnings as free and unearned money and its winners as only stewards of it until they can distribute it to more deserving causes and persons such as yourself.

Without knowing a lot more I can't really guess whether your sister is being controlling or not. Perhaps she just wants to make herself more comfortable with how she feels before giving more money to family. Yes, I mean give . I'm really sorry to hear about your sister. It makes my think of my husband's family - they try to control people through money and gifts.

As a result, we just do what we feel is right. We don't bow down to certain members who do have a lot of money just to get some perks. They like to hold it against you if they do give you money or special gifts. I have a sister-in-law who decorates her house like the grandmother does because the grandmother has money.

I'm wondering how close your relationship is with the winner sister. You mention health problems that she's aware of. And like it or not, $1,000 is better than nothing. Also, she does have to pay taxes on the money. Depending on how much her house cost, bills and church, she may only have enough left to invest or save for her retirement. If you're serious about a loan from her and desperate, ask her if she would make you a loan, but through her bank. Have a loan officer draw up the arrangements.... [ More ]

Your sister clearly feels the need to control you. You played right into her hand by asking her for some. I wouldn't want to feel obligated to anyone for all the money in the world. The other sister received an automobile, which might seem like a lot, but ask yourself would you really want to be in that position, to be offered something conditionially? All I can say is I completely understand, since my sister is married with 2 children and would not give me a dime, even if she won $10 million. Yet she would expect me to give money to her if I won because I'm single.

My sister thinks I'm the hired hand to call anytime something breaks and doesn't even offer a soda while I'm there.

When I win big, if I were to give her a large sum I'd never hear from her until it was gone.

While I'm sure she would demand a full unpaid for share, our plan would be to dole it out a little at a time.

There are two sides to every story. Some family are dsyfuntional and don't even know it. 1.5 million is not alot after taxes though I would love to have won that. If you don't expect anything then you won't be disappointed or hurt. I have 2 sisters and 2 brothers and believe me I would help one of my sister more then the other because we have shared ups and downs together. If your sister is making you jump through hoopes to prove something, I think you are better off not even dealing with her. Like I said, if one of my sisters was suffering and needed help, I would help them out and I know that they would help me. It sounds like your sister has been a bit of a pain long before her win. Actually I'm truly NOT coming from that place, as a matter of fact, I think I'm going to tell her to forget it, and just do what I've been doing and paying slowly, to get myself in a better place. It may take allot longer, but at least I feel better about it.

I do realize she's not obligated at all ... but as explained in my other posts, we're all close, and I just don't understand why 'car' sister didn't have to prove her relationship to her before getting it, but I do ... for a very small amount, for something that will help me out tremendously. And it was a loan at that.

I actually understand you're saying very well ... and I know she has no obligation to give me anything, I think it's hurting so much because:

She always told us sisters, that if she won, we would 'all' get equal amounts and it would be at least 10,000.

We're all Christians, and we've gone through some tough times together, losing mom and dad (a VERY emotional event), talking of how we'll do this or that .. when we all get to Heaven.

See, that's exactly how she's making me feel ... and how she has made me feel and also the other sisters, my mom and my dad, when they were alive.

If she ever helped, it was with conditions ... when my mom had cancer, and was in her last days, sister and her husband went on a cruise, leaving me to take care of mom alone, and I was divorced with 2 small sons. I had to leave them alone with the 13 year old in charge, many times ... to care for mom. Sister then came home to sit there and show me... [ More ]

It sounds like you're coming from the Now that' we've won school of thought regarding your sister's jackpot.

Someone here recently posted that a coupld of TV shows about lottery winners said that 70% of them wind up blowing all the money, and it's usually because they try to please evereybody, using anybody to mean most commonly friends and family.

I don't know if it was before or after taxes that your sister won 1.5 million. If she won 1.5 million and had to pay taxes on it and after all her bills were paid the house bought and immediate family and friends were helped she might be low on funds.

The little bit she has left might be a financial cushion for her at this point after all it take lots of money to raise a child and put them through school.

I guess I am going to go against the grain here and give my opinion and I hope it's not taken the wrong way. I too have 3 sister, but I also have my mom and neices and nephews that I plan on helping if I ever come into a big jackpot. (big is relative it depends on the size how much they will get.) The thing is besides my mom, the rest of the bunch will only get a set of amount. That is it.

Thing is you see, I'm not a greedy person at ALL, I've never had much in life .. and have trouble buying myself new clothes, I'll go for years before I do that, instead I'd rather pay my bills and live responsibly. I'm a good person, kind and loving to all my sisters.

My sister has come into a winning of 1.5 million.

I have 2 other sisters, so there are 4 of us.

My sister bought a house, gave her 'only' child $100,000 and a new loaded car. She also bought 'one' sister a new car and gave me and my other sister $1,000.
