Polls and surveys are similar but different. A structured survey with closed ended questions may have a low validity due to intended bias in the question structure. A poll is a vote. A poll can be used to gather information like a survey .The census is not a sampling poll and not a survey of opinion. Both a survey and a poll can be used for statistical information. It depends on who is doing the poll and what kind of poll it is.

Is it the Nielsen rating calling to ask if you're watching a specific show? That's a yes or no close ended poll.

Is it a newspaper or online news poll asking for a yes/ no vote, or which candidate you'd pick?

Is it a discussion board, the forum section, of a sitre such as LP?

The purpose of a poll should be to illuminate the thinking of the people about a topic. Unfortunately, polls today are generated with an end in mind. Information contrary to that end are counted differently than information in agreement with that end.
