  The purpose of a poll should be to illuminate the thinking of the people about a topic.  Unfortunately, polls today are generated with an end in mind.  Information contrary to that end are counted differently than information in agreement with that end.

  It depends on who is doing the poll and what kind of poll it is.

  Is it the Nielsen rating calling to ask if you're watching a specific show? That's a yes or no close ended poll.

  Is it a newspaper or online news poll asking for a yes/ no vote, or which candidate you'd pick?

  Is it a discussion board, the forum section, of a sitre such as LP?

  Usually a poll would consist of several options, up to 10 here, and the last one is Other with an invitation to explain or discuss the choice of option.

  This is after all a discussion board and people come here to <GASP> discuss things!

  As for persuasion, people explaining why they voted like they did is just that, an explanation.

  Depending on the topic, for some people it might be an experience, for others merely a concept. Hitting a jackpot is an example. For almost all of us here, thus far it's just a concept.

  A Yes / No poll without any other options is itself the most obvious attempt at a persuasion poll.

  Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners. 

  

  There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

  Polls and surveys are similar but different. A structured survey with closed ended questions may have a low validity due to intended bias in the question structure. A poll is a vote. A poll can be used to gather information like a survey .The census is not a sampling poll and not a survey of opinion. Both a survey and a poll can be used for statistical information. The simplest poll or survey question is a yes/no or true/false question. The census also has yes/no questions. A question like “are you still beating your wife “ is a structured question that has an inferred bias.

  There is no report available to a member taking a poll at LP as to who voted and how they voted. Your vote on an LP poll is totally autonomous to LP members.

  The question was about the PURPOSE/INTENT of a poll, not the RELULTS of the poll, or why someone voted. Are you still unlucky with QP's?
