I was behind a elder man last night,proably 70's early 80's,anyways he looked like he could have been a easy target for what,proably happened. He had played 033, $1 STR.But he was telling the clerk he was only given $10 bucks for his win . I looked at the ticket as the clerk told me to go ahead while she called the manager over to look at his ticket and deal with it.He was a winner,with 033 str for a $1. Had two tickets a couple months back wth the 721 exact and 50/50. The clerk stated that she only had enough for cash one ticket. She tried to keep the other one. I politly told her to hand me the other. She played dumb and gave it to me.

Good story bigdaddy, thanks. I've never even considered a scenario like that. And that could've been a major problem with a jackpot ticket.

I have had a clerk who occasionally asks if I want him to throw my playslips away after he runs them through the machine and I always decline and ask for them back. I can't say for sure what his motives are but I ain't splittin if I don't have to.

while i have never had it happen to me,i have had a clerk printout a duplicate ticket from my tickets and play it..she didn't charge me for it so i said whatever.she won $800.00 dollars off it...i'll never go in her store again so i hope she spent it wisely....

I mentioned this before in a similiar forum last year. I'm embarrasd to say I purchased a GA ticket, Holdem or Foldem Poker. (not exact name from memory but Poker). I don't know what it is about VA but I too have been in several circumstances where the clerk has tried to rip me off...best advise is what several have stated, know how much money you will spend before you play, and know how much you are to win, when you collect and call them out when they try to cheat you out of your money it is very embarassing to them when they are caught

As of a short while ago, I now dont know what to think about NY's ticket scanners.

I was in a supermarket standing at the customer service desk when I saw a man walk up and start scanning his lottery tickets. He seemed to be having no difficulty with it at all. I watched him scan about a dozen tickets and then he got in line for the service desk.

Over the weekend, I won $24 playing New York's 5/39 game Take5.

I purposely took it to a convenience store where I rarely buy tickets to cash it. They dont know my face in that store. Even though it was only 24 bucks, I signed it. When I got to the store I scanned it, but the scanner didnt work, it just said cant process ticket, see retailer. (Which is a whole other story, because I havent had a scanner work yet, and I just sent the NYS Lottery an e-mail about that.)

Yeah, I guess the machines can screw up too but at least we know they're not doing it on purpose, LOL (I think).

TN has no scanners but I've always had trouble with the ones in VA. I would occasionally try them just to see how they worked while already knowing what I had won. Unless you scan the ticket in a precisely certain way and hit the laser on some unknown mystery spot on the ticket, it won't read it and you have to go take your chances with the clerk anyway. Yeah, that's the old don't let them keep your ticket lesson. Whenever they say the ticket is not a winner, you have to demand the ticket back and don't leave the counter til they give it to you. The ticket belongs to you, not some lottery clerk.

The other thing is to report it to the owner of the store and the Lottery office and if nothing is done about it, to everybody you know so they won't do business at that store.

No, the only problems I've had with actual people have been finding myself in a situation where I misplaced my paper and tried to use plastic to no avail. Eventually, I did find the paper.

Not too long ago, however, I did an advance play of a certain number. I told the machine that I wanted the next five drawings, including both day and night, but it gave me the next five NIGHT drawings. So, I had to put another $5 into the machine to play the day drawings.

Oh yeah, you're undoubtedly right about that LANTERN, there's shifty people on both sides of the counter I'm sure. Think about the times the clerk forgot to charge you for something and you told them about it or gave you too much change and you gave it back to them. There's a lot of people who wouldn't do that and the clerk in many instances has to make up the shortage in the till. I wonder if it would do any good to call the GA Lottery and explain what happened and maybe they could see if those numbers were sold at that store at that time, going by the time on your other tickets. Not very many stores can payoff $500 pick-3 winners or $400 pick-4 doubles box bets so cashing the tickets can be more complicated than actually picking the numbers. In Ohio the chain grocery stores usually had enough money to cash the tickets. Some part time players believe they can only cash the ticket at the store where it was purchased and they are more vulnerable than experienced players.

Good advice on cashing only at the Cashing Agents locations too. Wish all states had that. Dishonest clerks stealing money from the store owner and customers have been around since the first owner hired one. And when the stores began selling lottery tickets, it gave more dishonest clerks new ways to steal money from the customers. Simply short changing customers has evolved into dishonest clerks telling players their tickets weren't winners and pocketing the money when the customer leaves the store.

A good cashier puts the bill he or she's making change for on the little ledge until the transaction is complete in case there's any question.

Well there's another one now, not only do we have to watch for wrong dates but wrong numbers.

I'm sure everybody would notice by the time they got home or when they checked them but then it would be too late. That's one of the fine print warnings that most people probably don't pay much attention to - check your tickets before you leave the counter.

You're correct rdgrnr, I guess I'm different in that I've thought about what I'd need to do if I won a Jackpot. It's probably a function of my career training that allows me to understand why people could hand a jackpot winning ticket to what amounts to a total stranger.

If I checked my ticket and saw that it appeared to be a big winner, there's no way I would go near a clerk in a convenience store and ask them to tell me if they think I won. That's all they can do, because in New York, store clerks are not employed by the NY State lottery. We hear about these types of rip-offs all the time in California. One clerk at a convenience store nearly got away with cashing a man's $500,000.00 Mega Millions ticket. He didn't sign it, and the clerk told him it was only a $2.00 winner! She tried to redeem the ticket a week later. Luckily, the store security tapes, along with the lottery computer records showed the woman hiding the winning ticket at the time it was checked. She's now in jail, and the man got his money.

I agree with your premise in principle RJOh but facing facts we have to accept that there are lower IQ people who play the lottery too and should they be victimized by these creeps just because they're born that way? I don't think so. There is no warning given that trusting, naive or otherwise challenged people take on more risk of being cheated out of their winnings than the rest of us so I think the integrity of the lotteries as a whole is absolutely vital.

Your story could be a caution about ticket sellers on interstate highways. They could possibly be more inclined to cheat because of the transient nature of their clientele. They may count on you not noticing the scam til you're miles down the road and at that point being unwilling or unable to return.

I'm guessing that particular sting was generated by a number of complaints about that particular retailer.

I'd just like to see them have assigned personnel that have that as their only duty on a daily basis.

Maybe give the crooks a little stress with their larceny if nothing else.

I've never had an issue with a scratch off however with a numbered ticket I have. I bought 10 p3 tickets and only received 8 of them back. Since I always count my tickets b4 I leave the counter, they didn't get me. Even charged me $10 for it. I knew I had a $2.00 winner , this was years ago before they had the scan them yourself machines, I gave the clerk my ticket walked off to get a pop and when I went to check out he handed me a slip that said not a winner, I figured I goofed up, guess what? It happened to my neighbor across the street, he's knew the owner well and said something about this clerk, come to find out he kept a little pile of NOT A WINNER SLIPS HANDY. WELL HE GOT FIRED.

I've had a few dishonest clerks. but I've more luck with more honest clerks. Sometimes I win more than I thought, I've bought tickets and almost walk out without my change and they stop me. Overall people are more honest than dishonest.

It's really a shame that some people can rip others off without even batting an eye. I have walked out of the Walmart forgetting to pay for a small toy my kids were holding and I turn right around and go back and pay, even though I made it to my car! In good conscience I can't do it, it would bother me! I was raised that stealing is wrong, I stole a tiny piece of candy once when I was 6 or 7 and I felt so bad that I ended up throwing the candy away when I got home. I couldn't even enjoy it, lol.... Oh yes, going thru NC I was buying Mega tickets in every east coast state as i was traveling up to NY fr. GA. Stopped in NC and asked for a qp. She gave me a ticket that was already printed. This was a Wed. and Mega played that Tues. The ticket was for Tues. that just passed and she had a pile of them. One thing I can say NC lottery dont play. I did not know they were coming to the store that morning and they were investigating the whole thing, they could see the time I brought my tickets, and look at all transactions being done on the machine and saw I was the one who brought the winning tickets but where did they go? Thanks for telling your story Chella36.

I think we're starting to see a pattern developing here. It looks like their favorite time to pull their crap is when they see you're distracted or talking to someone.

Maybe if we get enough people recounting their stories here, the authorities might start doing something about it.

I would love to see them run sting operations on an ongoing basis and start locking people up.

You are right... A few months ago I played some doubles and it hit... Well to make a long story short, I played both the numbers combo along with other tickets. That's how the clerk in VA got me too mswiz. Somebody behind me started a conversation and she took my exchange ticket out of the machine while I was turned around and I didn't remember it til later. I went back to the store and asked her where it was and long story short, she pulled it out of the trash can and gave it to me.

Some of these clerks got a real racket going on and they know exactly what they're doing. They always play dumb when you catch them though.

I was in a 7-11 in VA to play my pick-3 numbers I only play $4.00 a day I was talking to the person next to me. And the clark said $9 dollars I said no it's only came to 4 dollars. I'm a clerk and am ALWAYS truthful! I had a guy come in before sayinghe won $50. I scanned his ticket and on my screen it said $500 winnerand I told him it's $500 instead of $50 and he got more excited than alittle kid at christmas! If someone buys a ticket and win, they EARNit! I wouldn't want anyone doing that to me

Yes rd, once upon a long time ago when yours truly was very green, I went to a News Paper and Magazine/Lottery vending stand where I bought a lottery ticket; I had 4 out of 6 and he said the 4th number was a bonus number so I got paid that way; when it was suppose to be more....

After I looked at the winning numbers he had posted I showed him that the number he said was a Bonus number was not, and he said he had process the ticket already and that it was not as I said...that I had 3 + the bon... [ More ]

I don't know for sure, but one ticket (scratcher) I cashed was incorrectly valued. I asked for the ticket back to check it, and the clerk refused. I'm pretty sure there are more 'mistakes' by clerks than we hear about.

Yeah, I know what I've won before I ever cash a ticket, in fact I write it on the back of the ticket and sign the ticket so I won't let them screw me.

It's just the principle that they try to that gets to me. That and the fact that they're probably getting away with it with a lot of people.

I've never had that happen, but then I don't send my hubby (who doesnt play) to cash them LOL

We live in a really small town, and I know the owners and clerks. Plus, the screen faces the customers and i always look at it (even though i know what ive won before i go in).

If I were cashing it in at a store I don't know as well, I would be very vigilant...

I always know how much I won, and the places around here have the screen facing us, the customer, but it also has a little instrumental music piece that plays we're in the money. So even if you are not paying attention, you hear the little music play to know you've won. One place I had a winning ticket and they must've turned off the music on the machine, but the screen still faced me and she didn't cheat me.

Luckily, not me. I buy and cash my tics at the same places (3) where I trust the clerks. One is a little convenience store where I buy most of my tics, and the owners have even floated me a dollor or two if I forgot to bring enough money. The others are the Tom Thumb grocery store, and a convenience store near work where I buy the work pool tics.

Has a Lottery Clerk Ever Attempted to Rip You Off?

It's happened to me twice this year.

Once where a clerk in VA kept my exchange ticket which I related not too long ago and once a couple of weeks ago.

In the recent incident, I sent my wife, who is not a player, (Man, what a segue for a joke!) into a gas station we rarely frequent to cash in a Tennessee Cash ticket. It was a $5 Quick Pick with 2 winners on it. One was 2 numbers which wins a free ticket and one was 3 numbers and the Cash Ball which was worth $11 (pari-mutuel).
