Chrome for me under both a dual boot of Windows 7 and Linux. It's light weight and fast and that's what I love. I secure my system so I'm not too worried about malware and other rogue programs.

I've been using Opera a lot lately. It seems to get the job done without crashing. Not sure how secure it is though.

As for cable modem, we originally had a Toshiba, then that became flaky, so we replaced it with a Linksys from Office Depot and it gave us much better speed than the Toshiba ever did. My ISP is Cox Communications.

Pain in the neck to add in to Comcast (for eg.) a privately owned Docsis 3.0 Motorola Surfboard won't authenticate even cloning the MAC of the old one............I think they use another identifier off the modem from the physical layer to authorize the connection, unless the modem is on their inventory it won't fly............ for this customer I had to get 2nd 3rd? tier support to send us a Comcast modem that did better with VPN traffic. It was not fun.

In the early days: Cablevision had their Customers Purchase the Cable Modem instead of eating the initial capital outlay themselves. As far as I know the Cable Modem is on a Monthly Rental to Customers rather than provided for free.

You had mentioned that it would help provide maximum performance, which is why I asked you about it. Just to be clear, IPv6 won't help performance in any way that I'm aware of, and won't provide any benefit today that I'm aware of.

If someone is going to purchase a new Cable Modem: They might as well get one with IPv6 support now rather than waiting to purchase a 2nd one later with the IPv6 support. Minimizes out of pocket expense.

I had make some mistakes on these, so here it is fixed:

For even faster browsing there is also EarthLink accelerator for dial-up, but I can't seem to make it work if I want to log in and post, but just for browsing it really speeds things up a lot, but as I said, even without it I am now browsing and posting much faster due to a few tune-up changes that I made and no don't ask about the stuff.

I have tried many browsers thru the years and I like Firefox best, right now I am using version 6, one nice thing are some few of the add ons, but even without them I still like Firefox best.

As to the operating systems, you can always try to tune them for better performance.

I was happy with Win98SE and now I am happy with WinXP and maybe I would be happy with Win7, tinker with them a little and get them as best as you can, security and speed might not be too much of a problem once you ge... [ More ]

This is true when the manufacturer engineers it to become obsolete.

When IE-8 performs at a rate roughly 1/9 of its contemporary, Firefox 3, on their home court, XP, miserably doesn't seem that far off the mark to me. We're back into a period of browser wars , in which the major browser brands are fighting to capture market share.

Google Chrome on IE 9 are the browsers that currently have the least amount of frills on the interface. I like them because they are minimial interfaces. Maybe one of those would be more to your liking.

Google's real name policy in their Google+ service has absolutely NOTHING to do with the Google Chrome browser.

The fact that a piece of software keeps itself updated is a GOOD THING. How you could twist that into something evil is beyond me.

Installing the Chrome Web browser doesn't let Google into your private life . That's just preposterous.

I don't care too much about milliseconds of difference in browser speeds. I do wish I could still use Firefox 2, though. I liked it because it was dumb. I told it what to do, and it obeyed.

The newer versions are smart. They try to figure me out, predict what I want, and suggest what it thinks I'm looking for. And regarding browser performance, Google Chrome is (IMHO) the best web browser, based not only upon its stellar performance, but also on its simple and streamlined interface, its security (the first browser to run both Flash and Adobe Reader in a sandbox ), and the fact that it automatically and silently updates itself.

I still haven't been able to discover what is wrong with IE-8 that causes it to perform so miserably compared to all the others.

As far as XP is concerned, I'm stuck on it in a way someone might be stuck on their 10 year old Camry that serves them well. That said, if you'd like to send me a copy of Windows 7 Pro with a clean license, I'll gladly install it on one of my machines

One thing you might want to consider in all of the is the amount of referral services Todd is using at the LP. If you go with Firefox and use the Ghostery add on you will see what I mean. Everything anyone posts here goes to multiple referral services unless you use a blocking add on. Just an FYI.

What no one seems to be observing is that it's the RELATIVE differences among the 3 browsers I tested on the same machine within 15 minutes, that is important. I was hoping someone else would have a configuration that would allow them to compare IE-8, Firefox-5, and Chrome 13, to verify my result.

To compare IE-8 to IE-9 we need someone with a dual boot system, one running IE-8 under XP, the other, IE-9 under whatever.

There are so many reasons a machine can run slow it would surprise many as to how fast an old machine can run on WinXP browsers if the software and hardware are configured correctly.

Any machine able to run WinVista can be also greatly improved if configured correctly.

The key is improving performance issues is that a computers' resources are not being frivilously spent on uneccessary or unknowingly authorized processes.

IE-8 is for Windows XP so by comparison your machine is probably much slower. Some manufactures did offer XP as an option after Windows Vista came out and their results could be slightly better. IE-9 is much faster but XP users can't use it.
