Actually, I got that out of a Frank Sinatra biography that I read a few years back.

He used to travel with a couple bodyguards as I recall and they both carried a stack of hundreds which Frank used for tipping.

And when Frank wanted to tip somebody he'd say Duke 'em and the guy would peel off a C-Note and hand it to the person.

I bought the book for an Italian friend of mine and he thought it was a cool term and still uses it all the time.

Ya it is interesting...

The worst I have had happen is a clerk laughed at me for buying ten dollars on one ticket when I was cashing in the ticket because I only won 2 dollars. That really did make me feel bad.

Definitely. It is funny to see the varying reactions when you cash a medium winner. Most people are very nice, and some seem to have a bit of resentment in their facial expression. But who knows, that could be due to something else.

SD SF are excellent cities, but only one of those has the best climate in the US. I don't want to hear it, Hawaii and Florida - too hot and too humid. And don't even think about it, Arizona, because I could stick my head in my oven if I wanted to get dry heat like... [ More ]

So I did go to that store last night and even though the clerk in question wasn't there I decided to see about cashing it there because I didn't want to walk around with the uncashed ticket too many more days just to make a point. I asked the clerk if he could cash a $400 lotto ticket and he said that he couldn't but then as I was walking out he said, Hold on, I can ask my manager if he can cash that ticket.

That was so rude! Tell the manager that he has a jerk for a clerk who will make the store lose business. I stopped going to one of the neighborhood stores for a rudeness of one of their clerks. I had been going to that store for the longest and everyone was so nice to me except for that first time that I went an encountered that one. It seemed to me that he was too stressed out and couldn't handle the pressures of the job: Always too long lines there.

I wonder how he felt about people buying cigarettes and booze in his store ?

A lot of store owners feel that they arent making enough money off of ticket sales like they are everything else....plus the guy was probably jealous because you had the money to buy tickets and he did not ....he on the other hand probably spent his money on booze and cigarettes and considered what you were doing was somehow a vice.

I agree in principle and to an extent, because obviously that motto doesn't work very well when applied to Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany, for example. There are some situations where tolerance and patience are exhausted, but yes, in general and in principle, I agree.

Since the clerk is not quite at that level, he does still qualify for patience. Barely.

I checked my Fantasy 5 ticket and it hit 4 out of 5 numbers to win $395, which is not as nice as the $55K it would have been with that 5th number, but not bad.

So now of course I have to go back to that same store and more specifically to that same guy. I can think of a million ways to approach it and/or things to say, but I think I'll just play it low key until he's counting out the money.

I do have to say, one of the reasons I prefer to buy my tickets from the lotto machine at the grocery store is so I don't have to interact with clerks - no comments, good or bad, and no messed up tickets.

I think people like this have been inundated with the idea that it's wasting money to play the lottery, but they don't consider the odds that if they spend $1 a week/$52 a year that they improve their odds from nothing to something.

The only thing I tell clerks like this is 'you can't win if you don't play'.

Any store clerk's who call people- customers names for buying lottery tickets- tend to forget that the customers are the one's bringing money into the store to pay their wages!

If you won alot of money, they wouldn't call you names, they'd probably be jealous of the fact that you won..

I have not had clerks call me names. But if I get a bad vibe from a clerk when I purchase tickets from them then I will not buy tickets from that store. Which is what happened to me at Circle K here in mac. One of the clerks was given me the creeps so I went further down the road to Big Apple to play my lottery. Good luck to you!-weshar75

Here's my take on the situation - sounds like clerk hates the fact that he now has to sell lottery tickets to make ends meet and makes himself feel better by calling people who can afford to spend their $$$ on lottery tickets derogatory names.

In other words, it really has nothing to do with you - IMO, the guy's got personal issues and should not be doing any job that requires interaction with the general public

I have seen this happen several times over the course of the lottery. But look at who is making the comments.... I have seen some clerks do it or say some insensity thing as ...you thing you really going to win, or wow, you keep buying all those tickets. ....and other snide comments.

Then on the customer side I have heard many rude comments but the customer themselves might be buying 3 or 4 carton of cigarettes that they are paying over a 100 dollars for to where my little sale of lotte... [ More ]

Three ways to address this:

1. On the spot, when he chided you, ask for his full name then tell him you'll be talking to the store manager or owner.

2. Now, after the fact, send a letter to the store owner with details about each encounter including the dates and the fact that you have now

taken your business elsewhere.

3. When you won on the last ticket - you could have gone back to that store to cash it in.

Write a letter to both corporate and to the district manager. Carbon Copy your State Lottery Commission. Don't bother with the store manager. Tell them you will not buy your tickets from that store. Companies listen to 'I'll never buy X from your store' over 'I will still buy X', even if you dont mean it.

The problem *will* be solved, and you would have only had to pay for stamps or your internet connect to send the letters.

Don't worry you will be able to buy your lottery on the Internet sometimes in 2012. I wrote a thread about how crazy it is to buy lottery tickets every week by going to the stores that sell them.I decided to play the lottery on a monthly basis regardless of the jackpot size and I do not believe in advanced plays.

This happened to me two nights ago. I was checking tickets and buying one at a local gas station and the clerk was somebody that had chided me the previous week for buying lottery tickets. He had said something like, That's crazy - it'll get expensive buying them every day when he was printing my tickets. I didn't say anything last week when he said that. I just thought it odd that he'd be trying to dissuade lotto sales when it's one of the items that they sell in order to stay in business.
